The first thing I want to say about this great sounding set, is that not one performance took place at the California Jam no matter what the title might suggest. That being said, EVERY PERFORMANCE is Soundboard/FM quality, leading me to believe it's a compilation of radio shows. The Who tracks come from one of their King Biscuit Flower Hour appearances. I was told but can't confirm that the Mott The Hoople tracks are from a King Biscut Flower Hour show. I highly recommend this 3CD set, I mean look at the artist and track list, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, Robin Trower, Leslie West, Peter Townsend, et al one thing the title was correct about is the Guitar Factor!

“It’s exciting to have so many phenomenal artists performing in this special musical tribute to my dad, Jerry Garcia!” said Trixie Garcia in a statement. “DEAR JERRY: CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF JERRY GARCIA speaks volumes to Jerry’s lasting influence in the ears and hearts of his fans and fellow musicians. Join us in celebrating the legacy that inspired so many.”

“Jerry gave his heart, soul, and music to his band mates, fellow musicians, and to millions of fans around the world,” said Wortman. “Whether playing in the Grateful Dead, his acoustic and bluegrass bands or his beloved Jerry Garcia Band, his songs made us happy just to be alive. As all of us in the extended Grateful Dead family embark on celebrating 50 years of their music, I can’t think of a more fitting way to kick-off the festivities than by honoring Jerry and his songs at this extraordinary event. I am privileged and humbled to be working with theses artists to deliver such a special event to the fans — it will be unforgettable.”

This is a high quality Vigotone two-CD set taken from the soundtrack of a 1965 TV broadcast of this all-star concert. Enjoy the fine music by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Moody Blues, The Animals, Herman’s Hermits and more.

According to the sleeve notes:
The New Musical Express, the British music weekly with the largest circulation, staged a series of concerts in the ’60s featuring artists who topped their popularity polls. The concerts, known as The Poll Winners’ Concerts, were all held in Wembley. This two CD-set documents the second to last Poll Winner Concert held on April 11, 1965 at Wembley Stadium. An edited version of this concert was
screened on ABC TV and networked throughout the UK on April 18 of that year. This set was compiled from the soundtrack of the unedited master.

Music is a great leveller and it’s great to find the likes of The Moody Blues, the R&B of Georgie Fame; the folk of The Seekers; the showtune/ballad of Cilla Black; The Rolling Stones; the sultry Dusty Springfield; more folk from Donovan and The Beatles all at the same show - no airs, just great fun and smashing three-minute pop. And, surprisingly or not, all quite innocent… really.

As someone who shared this on the net once quipped: “This one-day rock festival is a snapshot of rock the moment before it became rebellious. Bob Dylan hadn’t given The Beatles their first joint yet (that’s another story!), The Stones were mop tops and The Who
weren’t yet at My Generation.” And one might even add, before The Seekers’ I’ll Never Find Another You was hijacked by church choirs.

Ah… those were the days.

REVIEW
by Tim Sendra (AllMusic)
Rock & Roll Christmas is a wildly uneven collection of holiday songs by rockers from the '60s, '70s and '80s (with a short jump back to the '50s on Chuck Berry's "Merry Christmas, Baby"). The songs are thrown together with no sense of pace or context. For example, Bon Jovi's super smooth ballad "I Wish Everyday Could Be Like Christmas" is followed by Bob Seger's wall-shaking "Sock It to Me, Santa," which in turn is followed by the Moody Blues' ponderous and overwrought "What Child Is This." On the positive side, the disc does contain a few Christmas classics that may be hard to find elsewhere, namely Billy Squier's "Christmas Is the Time to Say I Love You," Elton John's Beach Boys/Phil Spector-inspired "Step Into Christmas," the Kinks' "Father Christmas," Emerson, Lake & Palmer's "I Believe in Father Christmas" (which a clever compiler would have put side by side with the Kinks' track), and the Waitresses' typically snarky "Christmas Wrapping." The makings of a very good compilation are here; the follow-through is faulty with too many duds like Elvin Bishop's "Silent Night" and the Bon Jovi ballad on-board. If you find it at a nice price, it may be worth it anyway.                http://fp.io/b41c856f/

A milestone birthday plus a milestone event anniversary? You've got "Move Me Brightly," a film based around the historic musical event of the same name that celebrated Grateful Dead's legendary Jerry Garcia on what would have been his 70th birthday last year. The date also marked the 10th anniversary of the annual "Jerry Day" in Garcia's hometown of San Francisco. Of all the Dead events happening around the city that day, none were closer to Garcia than the all-star gathering of musicians, friends and friends at the "Move Me Brightly" tribute concert at Dead member Bob Weir's TRI Studios, an epic five-hour concert that was streamed live right here on Yahoo Music—and we have highlights from the show for you to watch right now!

The original stream began with a series of interviews with some of the biggest names in music telling stories and paying tribute to Garcia. Interviewed by actor Luke Wilson, Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann recounted experiences with the Dead, artists Carlos Santana, Sammy Hagar, Perry Farrell chatted about Garcia's influence, along with personal stories from Garcia's brother Tiff, ex-wife Carolyn "Mountain Girl" Garcia and three daughters.

The monster line-up of musicians young and classic, who were shuffled in and out throughout the show, included Dead bassist Phil Lesh and vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux, Mike Gordon of Phish, drummer Joe Russo and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti of Further, Harper Simon (son of Paul Simon), drummer Chris Tomson of Vampire Weekend, Hold Steady members Craig Finn and Tad Kubler, Josh Kaufman and Sam Cohen of Yellowbirds (who previously joined Weir for "The Bridge Session"), Cass McCombs, Black Crowes keyboardist Adam McDougall, Cardinals' Neal Casal and Jon Graboff, Jason Roberts, Jim Lauderdale and Jonathan Wilson.

WARREN HAYNES / WINTERTIME BLUES

The 1999 11th Annual Warren Haynes benefit concert for Habitat for Humanity offers something for everyone. Disc One opens with soul-filled acoustics by Edwin McCain and Warren Hayes. They are followed by a rolling blues jam hosted by Derek Trucks. Derek Trucks leads with "Rastaman Chant" -- a bow to Reggae that keeps you bouncing. Trucks then lays a solid foundation with the jazzy Chicken Strut for a five-song set that closes out the first disc. The set features guest after guest pushing each other to new heights. Jimmy Herring, Col. Bruce Hampton, Susan Tedeschi, and Larry McCray mix and match as song after song delivers first rate blues. Larry McCray sizzles on "Ain't That Loving You" and Col. Bruce Hampton will have you kneeling at the altar of the blues with his "Yield Not to Temptation". Tucks closes Disc One with Tedeschi's "Just Won't Burn" (Oh, but she does and so will you).

Tedeschi opens the second disc with a version of "Angel from Montgomery" that rivals Bonnie's rendition. Cry of Love returns after a five-year absence to rock the concert. On "Piece Pipe" they beat out a powerful song that resurrects the spirit of the 60s. Government Mule then does for Disc Two what Tucks did for Disc One - they host a rolling jam featuring Johnny Neal, Jimmy Herring, Col. Bruce Hampton, Mike Barnes, and Little Milton. Jimmy Neal rips out one great line after another on "Falling Down". Hampton, Neal and Mike Barnes have some fun with Willie Dixon's "Spoonful". The second disc closes with Little Milton reaching new heights on "When the Blues Come Knockin'" followed by Government Mule, Derek Trucks, Little Milton, Johnny Neal and Little Milton in an unforgettable version of "Merry Christmas Baby".

This is a solid two CD set for the serious Blues-Rock fan who appreciates live music and artists who love to jam. - amazon.com
