I love the price on the poster. $3.00 to see two bands. And people probably thought it was a high price. This is a great document of the San Francisco sound just before the Summer Of Love.

The Winterland Ballroom, often referred to as Winterland Arena or simply Winterland, was an old ice skating rink and 5,400 seat music venue in San Francisco, California. Located at the corner of Post Street and Steiner Street, it was converted to exclusive use as a music venue in 1971 by rock promoter Bill Graham. The building has been torn down and apartments have been built on the site.

Winterland was built in 1928 for the then astronomical cost of $1 million. Opening on June 29, 1928, it was originally known as the "New Dreamland Auditorium." Sometime in the late 1930s, the name was changed to Winterland. In its early years it served as an ice skating rink that could be converted to an entertainment venue. Early acts/shows at Winterland included Shipstad and Johnson's Ice Follies. It also was host to opera, boxing, and tennis.

Starting with a 1966 double bill of Jefferson Airplane and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Bill Graham began to occasionally rent the venue for larger concerts that his nearby Fillmore Auditorium could not properly accommodate. After closing his New York City venue known as the Fillmore East in 1971, he began to hold regular weekend shows at Winterland. Various popular rock acts played there, including such bands and musicians as Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Cream, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Styx, Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead, The Band, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Rush, Genesis, Jefferson Airplane, Traffic, Grand Funk Railroad, Humble Pie, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Sha Na Na, Loggins and Messina, Lee Michaels, Heart, Deep Purple and Elvis Costello, the latter in support of his Armed Forces album. A great number of the best-known rock acts from the 1960s and 1970s played Winterland or played two blocks away across Geary Boulevard at the original Fillmore Auditorium. Peter Frampton recorded parts of the 4th best-selling live album ever, Frampton Comes Alive!, at Winterland. The Grateful Dead made Winterland their home base, and The Band played their famous last show there on Thanksgiving Day 1976. That concert, featuring numerous guest performers including Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and many others, was filmed by Martin Scorsese and released in theaters and as a soundtrack under the name The Last Waltz. Winterland was also host to the Sex Pistols' final show on January 14, 1978.

During Winterland's final month of existence, shows were booked nearly every night. Acts included The Tubes[1], The Ramones, Smokey Robinson, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and on December 15–16, 1978, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band. Springsteen's December 15 show was simulcast on local radio station KSAN-FM and Springsteen historians consider that show one of his most legendary. Winterland closed on New Years 1978/79 with a concert by the Grateful Dead, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and The Blues Brothers. The show lasted for over eight hours, with the Grateful Dead's performance — documented on DVD and CD as The Closing of Winterland — lasting nearly six hours itself. The final show was simulcast on radio station KSAN-FM and also broadcast live on the local PBS TV station KQED. Winterland was eventually torn down in 1985, and was replaced by apartments.

Quicksilver Messenger ServicePurple Pyramid Records release on CD a vintage concert recording of legendary San Francisco psychedelic jam band Quicksilver Messenger Service titled Live at the Old Mill Tavern, March 29, 1970 on August 27, 2013.
The CD features a rare performance by the newly formed 6-piece line-up, playing several new songs and old favorites. By early 1970, Dino Valenti, a veteran of Quicksilver’s earliest incarnations, had returned to the frontline of the group. Touring constantly, the band were riding high from the success of their third album ‘Shady Grove’, released just a few months previously. Says Gary Duncan, “Live shows were our bread and butter. We didn’t sell a lot of records like some of the other groups… But we played a lot of shows – constantly.”
From the CD liner notes by famed writer Dave Thompson:
“The six-piece band – Dino Valenti, Gary Duncan, John Cippolina, David Freiberg, and Greg Elmore – had only been playing together a few months, since New Year at the Fillmore rang in this new decade, and they are blazing tonight. Fiery and more fiery still…waiting in the wings for encore time was harmonica legend Jimmy Cotton, whose eponymous Blues Band was kicking the crap out of more or less every band it came up against in concert. Apart from Quicksilver… There’s a lot of live Quicksilver material out there, and that is how it should be. The records are great but, as all the members have said, it was live that the Messenger Service really smoked, and the live tapes that truly mark the life and times that they lived so well. This recording punches all of those buttons, and a whole bunch more besides!”

At their best, Quicksilver Messenger Service sounded like a blend of early Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and the Grateful Dead, but almost constant personnel changes kept them from truly evolving into what they could have been. This set collects outtakes from a 1967 studio session, live tracks from a pair of concerts at the Fillmore in 1966 and 1967, live tracks from a concert at the Fillmore East in 1968, live tracks from a concert at Winterland in 1970, and tracks from a performance at the Old Mill Tavern, also from 1970. There's also a DVD featuring video footage from various shows the group played between 1967 and 1973. The sound is decent, and there are many times when the band rises to the occasion, but this is definitely a set for serious fans and collectors only. - allmusic.com

This recording sounds to me like one channel soundboard and one channel audience, as do other circulating tapes from this club. It's definitely got an ambient sound with quite a bit of tape hiss but sounds fairly decent - especially after the speed correction.   http://fp.io/aa858413/

This is Quicksilver’s final performance of a three-night Winterland run. This night they were opening for local friends Jefferson Airplane.

It's New Years Eve 1967/68, and QMS is surrounded by friends and family both on the stage and off. It's obvious from the relaxed instrumental beginning that this will be a long, psychedelic night. With little or no thought of time constraints, almost all the material from the previous two nights is included again in this set. Strong improvisational versions of "Who Do You Love," "Smokestack Lightning" and another extended jam on "Gold and Silver" are highlights, as is the set closing "Mona," which travels to the outer regions of psychedelia and showcases John Cipollina and Gary Duncan's intertwining guitar work - essentially a preview of where they would head on their next album, Happy Trails.

Following sets by Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Jefferson Airplane, a free form jam ensued, featuring members of all three bands - a memorable way to ring in the New Year, to say the least.             http://fp.io/mad11ca5/

What looks like a pretty exciting release is actually just a re-packaging of Quicksilver Messenger Service's 2nd album "Happy Trail" (1968). Just compare the track listing and the timings between the two: they are pretty identical.

How Purple Pyramid Records (a subsidy of Cleopatra Records) can get away with this obvious rip-off is beyond me, especially since BGO records (UK) just released a remastered "Happy Trails" in 2010.

Purple Pyramid's "shiny" new cover art is kinda interesting, but that's about it. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Capitol Records ends up suing the pants off of Purple Pyramid for copyright infringement.

As far as the music, this is prime Quicksilver Messenger Service. Live, improvisational and spontaneous. If you don't already have this in your QMS collection, this one is a must. The sound is exceptional with good stereo separation. Hard to believe this is even a live recording at all.


Thank you for the heads up about this being a mere reissue. I've had it in my wish list for a while but won't be buying it now.

I've been ripped off before, but never this blatantly! I scoured the web before I bought this CD as I already had Happy Trails on LP and I was wary of the identical track listing and the fact that it was amazing that unreleased live stuff from Quicksilver Messenger Service from 1969 had eluded all of us fanatics up until the present. The inside liner note that someone posted stated that this was an unknown performance from 1969 and the last one with Gary Duncan and made no mention that this was merely a reissue of Happy Trails, albeit with inferior sound quality; so I figured that this CD was a dream come true for us Quicksilver freaks. I'm still incredulous that Purple Pyramid could pull off a stunt like this and not be aware of the damage to their reputation! I mean, like, what were they thinking?
