In October 1976 Zappa toured with vocalists Ray White and Lady Bianca (another strongly gospel-influenced singer), Eddie Jobson (freed from Roxy Music as Bryan Ferry split for a solo career) on violin and keyboards and the O'Hearn/Bozzio rhythm section. With so few participants, there was less need for the elaborate arrangements used for larger forces, and the music was exceptionally fluid - the sound wet and live. The was room for a great deal of spontaneity.
Frank invited Lady Bianca to tour with him as a backing vocalist and pianist but this only lasted a month as she felt uncomfortable singing some of his highly sexual lyrics.
Lady Bianca was in the band when the tour started in Miami on October 16, 1976, and She quit sometime between November 11th-16th '76. The last tape with Bianca is Quebec November 11th and the first without her is Toronto November 16. She sang "You Didn't Try To Call Me" and "Black Napkins" in virtually every show.
Lady Bianca is featured on “Wind Up Workin’ in a Gas Station” from the Rykodisc Cd “You Can’t Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 6”. Other performances can be found on various Zappa bootlegs.

The show at The Ahoy was performed by a relatively small band by Zappa standards, and has some really good guitar solos by the master. That is evident with the concert starting off with the guitar-centric “Chunga’s Revenge.” Zappa’s solo is – using a word frequently cited to describe his playing – blistering. There is a bit of angry energy in it, and given the circumstances outlined above, I must wonder how much of that he transferred into his playing. After some brief introductions, he quickly launches into a couple songs from “Joe’s Garage,” including the dreamy guitar piece “Outside Now.” In fact, not surprisingly, the concert pulls material from several albums released at the time, including “Tinsel Town Rebellion,” to be released the following year, “Sheik Yerbouti,” and “You Are What You Is.” The performance of “City of Tiny Lights” on this boot is just OK to me, except for the guitar solo, which pulls it out of mediocrity. I don’t care much for Tommy Mars’ keyboards on this one; very uninspired. Of course, one must consider the fact that Mars is compensating for the lack of a horn section on this particular tour.
Following a perfunctory performance of “Teenage Wind,” we get the heavy, boogie-ish “Bamboozled by Love,” which had plenty of potential, but again gets marred by Mars’ keyboards. Makes me wonder why the song was included in the set because it would have sounded so much better backed by a strong horn section. Thank god for Zappa’s guitar coming in and re-inserting the heavy rock feel into this. He pulls off a bit of outside, atonal playing that grinds power into the song. Ike Willis, however, sounds a bit anemic. After “Pick Me I’m Clean” comes “Society Pages”, which quickly segues into “I’m A Beautiful Guy,” and then “Beauty Knows No Pain.” This “suite” from “You Are What You Is” is concluded with “Charlie’s Enormous Mouth.”
Zappa goes a bit retro with his next group of songs, reaching slightly into the past with “Cosmik Debris,” (which really suffers from the lack of Ruth Underwood) from “Apostrophe(‘),” but going way back to “Freak Out!” for “You Didn’t Try to Call Me” and “I Ain’t Got No Heart.” Not sure who’s playing the guitar solo on this performance of “Cosmik Debris.” It’s an excellent soaring blues interpretation of the song that lacks Zappa’s signature style, which leads me to think it was either Willis or Ray White. Disc One is completed with “Love of My Life,” from “Cruising with Ruben and the Jets.”
Disc Two returns the show to more contemporary selections from Zappa’s catalog, starting with the title track from “You Are What You Is.” There’s nothing remarkable about this performance; in fact, the musicians sound like they’re just going through the motions. Things perk up when the group launches into “Joe’s Garage.” The concert appears to end after “Why Does It Hurt When I Pee,” but an encore quickly develops with “Dancin’ Fool.” Something to note: When Zappa at the end of the show is re-introducing band members, he repeats Ray White’s name several times as though he was being introduced again and again as different individuals. Was Zappa playing with the fact that the band he was touring with was considerably smaller than what he normally travels with?
With “Dancin Fool,” the band manages to use its small size to its advantage. That song is followed by “Bobby Brown,” also from “Sheik Yerbouti.” In both songs, Zappa delivers well with his vocals. Even “Ms. Pinky” comes off well despite it’s missing the extraordinarily fuzzed and heavy guitar and bass from “Zoot Allures.” This boot also has one of the few pre-release recordings of a live performance of “I Don’t Want To Get Drafted.” The show finishes with “The Illinois Enema Bandit,” in a great performance with Ray White’s vocals and with Zappa’s guitar work. Zappa’s solo is searing in its precision. He gave the crowd at The Ahoy that night a real gift with that solo.

Roxy By ProxyThe Zappa Family Trust release Roxy by Proxy – a ‘prequel’ to the Roxy & Elsewhere-movie documenting Frank Zappa’s legendary Roxy- performances of december 1973.
The original Roxy & Elsewhere album was released in 1974. Most of the songs were recorded at The Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, California on December 8, 9 and 10, 1973. The material taken from the Roxy concerts was later edited and amended with overdubs in the studio. The album also contains some tracks recorded at later dates.
Roxy by Proxy has been described by the Zappa Family Trust as “All Roxy, No Elsewhere: 76 minutes of never-before-released Frank Zappa master recordings from the Roxy Performances of 9 & 10 December 1973.

FRANK ZAPPA – Joe’s Camouflage
Joe's CamouflageThe latest release in the Frank Zappa Corsaga archival series, Joe’s Camouflage, follows in a long line of Corsaga releases put together by archivist Joe Travers that started with 2004's Joe’s Corsage.
The overview gives credence to fans’s thoughts that the release features a version of the Frank Zappa band that rehearsed in 1975, but never toured.
In this iteration of FZ’s band, he was joined by Napoleon Murphy Brock (keyboards, sax, and vocals), Robert “Frog” Camarena (guitar and vocals), Denny Walley (slide guitar and vocals), Novi Novog (viola and vocals), Roy Estrada (bass and vocals) and Terry Bozzio (drums and vocals).

ED PALERMO BIG BAND - Oh No! Not Jazz?!?!
Ed PalermoThe Ed Palermo Big Band is led by alto saxist and arranger Ed Palermo; he has had this big band with much of the same personnel for over 30 years, which is a hugely impressive feat in itself, and has had his band performing the music of Frank Zappa for 20 years. The band is a 18 piece ensemble of five woodwind players, four trumpeters, three trombonists, two keyboardists, guitar, violin, bass and drum.
Oh No! Not Jazz!! consists of two albums of musical performances. The first album (tracks 1-8) further explores Ed’s distinctive, big band interpretations of the music of Frank Zappa and for the most part, he concentrates here on Frank’s initial burst of creative works from original Mothers of Invention era of 1966-1970.
In addition, two notable pieces are performed here. One of Frank’s most loved works, Inca Roads, with a vocal by guest Napoleon Murphy Brock contrasts with one of his most ‘notoriously difficult’ works, The Black Page #2. All of the performances and arrangements of these great pieces are fun, musically witty and masterful. The second album (tracks 9-19) features Ed’s own colorful compositions, which are here featured on a recording for the 1st time in over 25 years!
This double album shows that despite the financial and practical difficulties of running a large sized band, that the very fact that there are so many musical voices in a big band allows for showcasing arrangements better than any other vehicle. This is an exciting listen for fans of Frank Zappa and all adventurous rock and jazz music.
