JOE BONAMASSA - Different Shades of Blue

Joe Bonamassa – Different Shades Of Blue (2014)

Different Shades Of Blue (J&R Adventures) is Bonamassa’s first studio album in two years and the first album of his career to feature all original material. The result is a record with more of an experimental edge than previous Bonamassa records. It s a blues record that explores the outer reaches and the many different sounds that shape the genre.
Recorded at Studio At The Palms in Las Vegas, NV, Different Shades Of Blue was produced by Kevin Shirley (Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin), who has helmed Bonamassa’s last fifteen projects including his solo projects and collaborations with Black Country Communion and Beth Hart. To compliment Bonamassa s signature guitar style and vocals, Shirley brought together a group of musicians including Reese Wynans (organ, piano), Carmine Rojas (bass), Michael Rhodes (bass), Anton Fig (drums, percussion), Lenny Castro (percussion), Lee Thornburg (trumpet, trombone), Ron Dziubla (saxophone), the Bovaland Orchestra (strings), and Doug Henthorn and Melanie Williams (background vocals).

BETH HART, JOE BONAMASSA - LIVE IN AMSTERDAM

The collaboration between soulful singer Beth Hart and popular blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa has been both critically-acclaimed and commercially successful. While their 2011 album Don't Explain laid a foundation and flitted on and off the blues chart for a couple years, their 2013 album Seesaw earned the pair a Grammy® nomination and still sits in the Top Ten. So, what do Beth and Joe do for an encore?

How about a live album? Better yet, a live album and a live DVD! No one has ever accused Joey Bones of not delivering for his fans, and on March 25, 2014 his J&R Adventures label will release the dynamic duo's Live In Amsterdam in three different formats. A live concert documentary featuring 22 songs, including such fan favorites from the two albums like "Sinner's Prayer," Etta James' classic "I'd Rather Go Blind," "Strange Fruit," "Nutbush City Limits," and the title track from Seesaw.

Against the backdrop of the beautiful, historic Koninklijk Theater Carre in Amsterdam, the performance wows with scorching soul covers from the duo's 2011 debut album Don't Explain and 2013 follow-up Seesaw, originally made famous by artists such as Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Tom Waits, Ray Charles, Donnie Hathaway, Lucinda Williams, Bill Withers, Delaney & Bonnie, Buddy Miles, Tina Turner, Slackwax, Melody Gardot, Nina Simone, and more.

This project was born from what Hart, Bonamassa, and Bonamassa's long-time producer Kevin Shirley call a "crazy idea" to record a catalog of songs in a way that recalls the days when a band recorded live in the studio with little or no overdubs; the days when the vocalist was happy when a take was done regardless of personal performance.

"What we're trying to capture is an era of reaction and spontaneity – something that was a great inspiration for me as a budding musician," explained Bonamassa. "It's a bygone era in lieu of modern times and digital studio manipulation. We wanted to do the exact opposite of that for this live concert. There were no nets and what you hear is what was sung and played that night."

01. Amsterdam, Amsterdam!
02. Them There Eyes
03. Sinner's Prayer
04. Can't Let Go
05. For My Friends
06. Close To My Fire
07. Rhymes

09. Your Heart Is As Black As Night
10. Chocolate Jesus
11. Baddest Blues

REVIEW

Joe Bonamassa's Tour de Force: Live in London video series presents four concerts recorded in the U.K. that feature the famed New York guitarist and his band in various settings that document his career. Each of the four DVDs is loosely themed and includes music that Bonamassa had recorded but seldom if ever played live. Though the track lists may be similar, various themes change up the arrangements night to night. This volume marks the tour's first evening. As such, it features a brief acoustic set, followed by the guitarist and a rhythm section at their loosest and most improvisatory, in full jam mode. Highlights include "Your Funeral My Trial," "Story of a Quarryman," "The River," and a sprawling reading of Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced." Also included on the disc is behind-the-scenes and interview footage.

Recorded from the 5th row on the left side of center of the stage.  As usual there were rude drunks around me so there is some crowd annoyance from talking but this does not take away from the quality of the show.  Both of Joes bands were amazing and well worth seeing while he is doing this.  Joe's guitar plug died just before Black Lung Heartache.  Joe moved his microphone to the guitar level and bent over the guitar to sing.  This was fixed during the band intros.  Enjoy.
