Toto formed as a group of six session musicians in 1977. Prior to the band's formation, the members of Toto were regulars contributing to many of the most popular records of the 1970s. According to popular myth, in order to distinguish their own demo tapes from other bands' in the studio, Jeff Porcaro wrote the word "Toto" on them.
It was do or die for Toto on the group's fourth album, and they rose to the challenge. Largely dispensing with the anonymous studio rock that had characterized their first three releases, the band worked harder on its melodies, made sure its simple lyrics treated romantic subjects, augmented Bobby Kimball's vocals by having other group members sing, brought in ringers like Timothy B. Schmit, and slowed down the tempo to what came to be known as "power ballad" pace.
Most of all, they wrote some hit songs: "Rosanna", the old story of a lovelorn lyric matched to a bouncy beat, was the gold; "Make Believe" made the Top 30; and then, surprisingly, "Africa" hit number one ten months after the album's release. All the awards helped set up the fourth single, "I Won't Hold You Back," another soft rock smash and Top Ten hit. As a result,
Toto IV was both the group's comeback and its peak; it remains a definitive album for the early '80s, also Toto's best and most consistent record.

Toto may be past its prime as a multi-platinum recording band, but Live in Amsterdam offers abundant proof that their performances are as electrifying as ever. Recorded in Amsterdam's Heineken Music Hall on February 17, 2003, near the end of Toto's 25th anniversary world tour, this dynamic concert serves as a cheerful reminder that Toto have been alive and well and recording steadily since 1978. The band's 2002 release Through the Looking Glass was an album of covers, two of which are welcomed here: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a prime showcase for guitarist Steve Lukather, and "Bodhisattva" is a tight, meticulous tribute to Toto's original drummer, the late Jeff Porcaro, and his classic sessions with Steely Dan. The mega-hits "Africa," "Rosanna," and "Hold the Line" are perfectly executed, and in a band full of talented singers, lead vocalist Bobby Kimball sounds better than ever. Two impressive medleys show the band in full gear as a comfortable unit of seasoned professionals, highlighted by impeccable work from keyboardist David Paich, bassist Mike Poracaro, and ace drummer Simon Phillips.

With the release of 1982's critically acclaimed and commercially successful 'Toto IV', Toto became one of the best-selling music groups of their era. They are best known for their Top 5 hits 'Hold the Line', 'Rosanna', 'Stop Loving You', 'Pamela' and 'Africa'. They still continue to sell out arenas all over the world. The band celebrated their 25th anniversary by touring the world, which started in 2002 and concluded in 2003.
