Choice Quality Stuff/Anytime is not only the third long-player from It's a Beautiful Day, it also includes a personnel unique from either of its predecessors. it was during the creation of this disc that lineup number two was replaced by lineup number three -- netting a separate band for the "Choice Quality Stuff" side and the "Anytime" side of the album.
Side one ("Choice Quality Stuff") rock harder like on "Lady Love". There is a distinct blues-based rock & roll attitude on "Creed of Love" and "Bye Bye Baby," which are more similar to Brit bluesmen John Mayall and Jeff Beck than any of their previous albums. "Words" bears an uncanny resemblance to Santana, even less surprising when you bear in mind that two of Santana's percussionists guest here. "No Words For Love" has more of that hippie vibe, and for the first time on an It's a "Beatiful Day" album -- a flute!
Side two ("Anytime") consists of somewhat more mellower stuff, probably to go back to the sound fo their first two. "Bitter Wine" is one of the better cuts here, and not only does David LaFlamme play violin, but Sid Page (of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks fame) as well. Original members Mitchell Hollman, Val Fuentes, and Patti Santos are all here, but they also have Tom Fowler play bass on some cuts who would later play with Zappa. Fred Webb, keyboardist since "Marrying Maiden" is still here, handling the piano, organ, and harpsichord.

The Winterland Ballroom, often referred to as Winterland Arena or simply Winterland, was an old ice skating rink and 5,400 seat music venue in San Francisco, California. Located at the corner of Post Street and Steiner Street, it was converted to exclusive use as a music venue in 1971 by rock promoter Bill Graham. The building has been torn down and apartments have been built on the site.
Winterland was built in 1928 for the then astronomical cost of $1 million. Opening on June 29, 1928, it was originally known as the "New Dreamland Auditorium." Sometime in the late 1930s, the name was changed to Winterland. In its early years it served as an ice skating rink that could be converted to an entertainment venue. Early acts/shows at Winterland included Shipstad and Johnson's Ice Follies. It also was host to opera, boxing, and tennis.
Starting with a 1966 double bill of Jefferson Airplane and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Bill Graham began to occasionally rent the venue for larger concerts that his nearby Fillmore Auditorium could not properly accommodate. After closing his New York City venue known as the Fillmore East in 1971, he began to hold regular weekend shows at Winterland. Various popular rock acts played there, including such bands and musicians as Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Cream, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Styx, Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead, The Band, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Rush, Genesis, Jefferson Airplane, Traffic, Grand Funk Railroad, Humble Pie, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Sha Na Na, Loggins and Messina, Lee Michaels, Heart, Deep Purple and Elvis Costello, the latter in support of his Armed Forces album. A great number of the best-known rock acts from the 1960s and 1970s played Winterland or played two blocks away across Geary Boulevard at the original Fillmore Auditorium. Peter Frampton recorded parts of the 4th best-selling live album ever, Frampton Comes Alive!, at Winterland. The Grateful Dead made Winterland their home base, and The Band played their famous last show there on Thanksgiving Day 1976. That concert, featuring numerous guest performers including Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and many others, was filmed by Martin Scorsese and released in theaters and as a soundtrack under the name The Last Waltz. Winterland was also host to the Sex Pistols' final show on January 14, 1978.
During Winterland's final month of existence, shows were booked nearly every night. Acts included The Tubes[1], The Ramones, Smokey Robinson, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and on December 15–16, 1978, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band. Springsteen's December 15 show was simulcast on local radio station KSAN-FM and Springsteen historians consider that show one of his most legendary. Winterland closed on New Years 1978/79 with a concert by the Grateful Dead, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and The Blues Brothers. The show lasted for over eight hours, with the Grateful Dead's performance — documented on DVD and CD as The Closing of Winterland — lasting nearly six hours itself. The final show was simulcast on radio station KSAN-FM and also broadcast live on the local PBS TV station KQED. Winterland was eventually torn down in 1985, and was replaced by apartments.

It's a Beautiful Day was a band formed in San Francisco, California in 1967, the brainchild of violinist David LaFlamme.
LaFlamme, a former soloist with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, had previously been in the band Orkustra, and unusually, played a five-string violin. The other members were his wife Linda (keyboards), Pattie Santos (vocals), Hal Wagenet (guitar), Mitchell Holman (bass) and Val Fuentes (drums). Although they were one of the earliest and most important San Francisco bands to emerge from the Summer of Love, It’s a Beautiful Day never quite achieved the success of their contemporaries such as The Grateful Dead and Santana, with whom they had connections. It’s A Beautiful Day created a unique blend of rock, jazz, folk, classical and world beat styles during the seven years the band was officially together.
The group's original manager, Matthew Katz, had previously been fired by both Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape. Much to the surprise of the group, Katz was at first unable to get any paying gigs for It's A Beautiful Day in San Francisco. Their first paying gig was out of town, in Seattle, Washington.
The group's signature song "White Bird" was inspired by the experiences David and Linda LaFlamme had while living in Seattle. For the month of December 1967 the group members lived in the attic of an old house owned by Katz while playing and rehearsing at Seattle's Encore Ballroom. In an ironic twist on the band's name, the song was partly inspired by Seattle's rainy winter weather. In a later interview David LaFlamme said:
Where the 'white bird' thing came from ... We were like caged birds in that attic. We had no money, no transportation, the weather was miserable. We were just barely getting by on a very small food allowance provided to us. It was quite an experience, but it was very creative in a way.
The band's debut album, It's a Beautiful Day, released in 1969, featured the tracks "White Bird", "Hot Summer Day", "Time Is" and "Bombay Calling". The intro of the last was used, at a slower tempo, by Deep Purple as the intro to "Child in Time" on its In Rock album. The vocals and violin playing of David LaFlamme plus Pattie Santos' singing attracted attention including FM radio play, and nationally, "White Bird" bubbled under Billboard's Hot 100 chart, peaking at #118.
By 1970 the original lineup of the band had changed somewhat; the LaFlammes had split up and Linda left the band, replaced by Fred Webb. The following album, Marrying Maiden, released in 1970, included memorable tracks and was also a chart hit. In that year, the group also performed at the Holland Pop Festival at the Kralingse Bos in Rotterdam, Netherlands and at the UK Bath Festival.
The band continued on to record Choice Quality Stuff/Anytime in 1971 and the live album Live At Carnegie Hall in 1972, touring until 1974 when they split up. In 1976, LaFlamme's solo version of "White Bird" finally cracked the Hot 100 Chart, peaking at #89. Pattie Santos was killed in a car crash on December 14, 1989.
It's a Beautiful Day reunited in 1997 under the name "David LaFlamme Band" as well as "It's a Beautiful Day" as Katz briefly let his copyright of the name go un-renewed. The band features founder David LaFlamme and original drummer Val Fuentes. Other band members are LaFlamme's current wife, Linda Baker LaFlamme (vocals), Toby Gray (basses & producer), Gary Thomas (keyboards & producer), Rob Espinosa (guitars), Michael Prichard (percussion) and continue performing today (2009) having toured with Jefferson Starship in 2007, and LaFlamme contributed to Jefferson Starship's 2008 release, Jefferson's Tree of Liberty. This line up is the longest continual band that has ever performed the IABD material.
A version of "White Bird" by violinist Vanessa-Mae was released in 2001 and reached number 66 in the UK Singles Chart. and has also been recorded by Blue Grass virtuoso Sam Bush as well as countless other regional acts over the years.

excellent quality live bootleg recordings of, It's A beautiful Day. These guys were an
excellent Rock, Jazz, Classical, folk band featuring David Laflame on Violin. Laflame's violin
work is very fine right up there with Jerry Goodman, Jean Luc Ponty etc.

In 1973, ongoing disputes over royalties forced LaFlamme out of the group he created, and upon installing new violinist Greg Bloch, the remaining members issued It's a Beautiful Day...Today. As a result of differing opinions regarding drugs, management and a penchant for a heavier sound.
With LaFlamme gone, Pattie Santos finally gets the chance to shine on this album. The music is now firmly in the post-psychedelic style, with a Southern Rock feel in many of the cuts, like "Mississippi Delta". There are elements of folk and even soul in many of the pieces.
"It's A Beautiful Day" disbanded shortly after the release of this swansong.

It's A Beautiful Day recorded over 3 nights opening for the Yardbirds (Cecil Taylor was also on the bill). I've spent a lot of my trading life putting together complete nights and or stands at the Fillmore West. It was an incredible time for music and one of the few times you can find such a wide range of bands on the same bill (where else could you find Black Sabbath opening for Love)! Anybody have the Yardbirds sets from this stand? Seems to not exist...
This is a nice 3 night stand, all are excellent soundboard quality with only slight tape hiss.
