THE NIGHTHAWKS - Back Porch Party

Over more than three decades, The Nighthawks have earned a reputation as one of the best and hardest - working bands around. Their live shows are legendary. Founded in the Washington, D.C. area in 1972, the 'Hawks' were a roots band before anyone had come up with the term. Their mix of blues, rock, rockabilly, soul and swing appeals to a widely diverse audience, built over years of touring throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. The band's current lineup features founding member Mark Wenner on harp and vocals, Paul Bell on guitar and vocals, Johnny Castle on bass and vocals and, on drums and vocals, Mark Stutso, who replaced longtime member Pete Ragusa.

Back Porch Party was recorded “live and acoustic” in the studio, the band running through a dozen songs that include five originals as well as covers of classic tunes by Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Slim, Willie Dixon, Ike Turner, and Jimmy Rogers. A couple of performances defy expectations, even for a band as flexible as the Nighthawks – their own version of “Down In The Hole,” better known as the theme from the acclaimed HBO series The Wire, and the Patsy Cline gem “Walkin’ After Midnight.”

THE NIGHTHAWKS - JACKS & KINGS VOL. 1&2 1977

The Nighthawks were playing with Muddy Waters at the Cellar Door at the time, so they invited his band to come into the studio after hours to record some classic Chicago blues tunes, including Jimmy Rogers “Walking By Myself,” John Lee Hooker’s “Sugar Mama,” and Elmore James “Dust My Broom” and “The Sky is Crying.” The result was a classic—a showcase of inspired playing of outstanding blues, titled “Jacks & Kings.” The band to this day regards this as one of their finest moments, and it became probably their best selling album.

In 1979, Adelphi created “Jacks & Kings, Volume 2: Full House.” This featured some quality, previously unreleased material from Side Pocket Shot and the Jacks & Kings sessions. The musical highlights included Paul Butterfield’s “Born in Chicago,” Robert Nighthawk’s “Anna Lee,” and Earl Hooker’s “Two Bugs and a Roach.” It was another solid showcase of classic blues mixed with rock and roll, and has been re-released as the combined CD “Jacks & Kings Volume I & II.”

The Nighthawks – 444 (2014)

444 is a program of The Nighthawks’ typical infectious brand of the blues, rockabilly, and country-tinged party tunes. Sometimes, they’re out to get you on the dance floor (“Livin’ the Blues,” “Honky Tonk Queen”), and sometimes they’re being entertaining by singing about the joys of things like “Crawfish.” Occasionally, they slow it down a bit to say something a bit deeper as in the album’s closer, “Roadside Cross.” From start to finish, 444 sounds like a rockin’ live concert without hearing the audience’s responses. That’s where you come in.

THE NIGHTHAWKS - DAMN GOOD TIME

Damn Good Time, features a combination of original and classic material. The album showcases the new line-up on versions of Jimmy McCracklin’s Georgia Slop, Elvis’ Too Much, the classic Smack Dab in the Middle, Nat King Cole’s Send for Me and a cool version of the Wilbert Harrison tune Work Together. The most-recent band member, drummer Mark Stutso, does four originals, demonstrating the added talent he brings to the band as a songwriter and singer. The lone original member Mark Wenner gives us 6 tunes that feature his roadhouse vocal style and great harp work. Recorded at Severn Records new state of the art studio, Damn Good Time represents a new beginning for the band and for Severn Records 1 Too Much

Catfish Hodge has been called an "American folk blues hero" and has been a mainstay on the American Blues music scene for three decades now! He has twenty four albums to his credit, comprised almost totally of original material. "Catfish Blues" and "Like A Big Dog Barkin’" on the Wildcat label, and "Eyewitness Blues" on Genes CD were released in 1994 and 1995. While growing up in Detroit, Hodge was sneaking into Motown Records Hitsville studio to catch the Four tops and the Supremes and grooving to R&B and Blues . He became a regular opener for Bonnie Raitt and Little Feat, who also started showing up on his recordings. When he formed the Chicken Legs Band in 1981, he was joined by Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, Richie Hayward, Kenny Gradney and Sam Clayton.

The first album on the Varrick label was the re-release of “Ten Years Live.” This was followed by the re-release of the classic first album “Rock-N-Roll.” These came out in 1983. It was also around this time that Gregg Wetzel joined the band on keyboards. This provided a new element in The Nighthawks sound both on record and in concert over the next few years.

As they worked on their next album for Varrick, the band wanted to do a simple, straightforward blues/rock recording that represented what they were all about. Unfortunately, the producer and record company wanted a more pop, radio friendly sound. The differing perspectives made this one of the more challenging studio sessions for the band. The resulting album, “Hot Spot,” was released in 1983 and was more a reflection of what the record company wanted than what the band did. In an ironic twist, it was at about this same time that Stevie Ray Vaughn’s first album, Texas Flood, won critical praise and created renewed interest in the blues.

THE NIGHTHAWKS : (the white album)

This is the debut album of The Nighthawks. Only available on vinyl at this time. Hopefully,this will change in the future.If you are a Hawk's fan,you need to get this album. It is one of their best. As with a lot of debut albums,there is an innocence/excitement element that shines through. The original lineup of the Hawks produced,in my opinion,their finest work. Nothing against the various incarnations since then,but I just like the early stuff the best,and this is the earliest of the early.This album has all the signature Nighthawk sounds, great bluesey vocals from three of the members,blistering guitar from Jimmy Thackery,world class harp playing by Mark Wenner and the great rhythm section of Jan Zukowski and Pete Ragusa. I'm not sure why this album has never been converted to CD but at least it still exists on vinyl and,again,I urge any Hawk's fan to get it if you've got a means to play it.

D.C.'s best Blues Band

The Nighthawks self titled album is one of their top 5 Albums. From the
bass play of Mainline, to the bouncy/catchy beat of Pretty girls and
Cadillac's, on to the bitter/almost spiteful I wouldn't treat a dog the
way you treated me, a genuine excellent album. Too bad it is only on
vinyl. This is one from the past that should have been put on disc. If
you are a fan of the Nighthawks, this 11 song beauty is the capstone on
the 12 disc's of the original members of the NightHawks. This album has
an energy, nay an urgency to it that is carried through almost the whole
album. Though I found the cut, "I wouldn't treat a dog the way you
treated me" sounded like it was recored in a very enclosed studio, I
do not know if it was to translate the tight controlled anger of the
lyrics, or it was just the way it was recorded? But along with every
other cut on the vinyl, it has a different energy and slightly different
sound than latter steller works of the Nighthawks, If you are a fan of
regional bands, as the Nighthawks are, I would find a copy, listen to
it, and be impressed. If you haven't heard of the Nighthawks, I would
start with this album/hopefully to become a disc in time/and enjoy, and
become a Nighthawks fan with the listening.
