Because of her blues-based comeback in the '90s, Etta James is usually thought of by the general public as a blues singer, but there's a good deal more to the picture than that, and this well-chosen and stunningly varied four-disc anthology, the first extensive survey of her entire career from 1955 to 2008, makes clear that Etta James has long been one of the best singers of her generation -- in any style. In many ways James resembles a female Ray Charles in her unerring ability to tackle (and sometimes combine) all of the strands of American popular music, from rock & roll to R&B, blues, country, gospel, jazz, and pure pop and soul, while still maintaining a distinct feel and sound that is all her own, and she has done this throughout a five-decade career that is astounding for its consistency. There’s so much to marvel at here, beginning with 1955's "The Wallflower" (an answer song to Hank Ballard's "Roll with Me Annie") and ending with a previously unreleased version of Rodney Crowell's “Ashes by Now” from 2008. In between, this set shows off the range of this impressive artist, who tackles everything from orchestral pop (her signature "At Last" from 1960), torch songs ("Don't Cry Baby" from 1961), gospel ("Something's Got a Hold on Me" from 1962), and heart-wrenching soul ("Tell Mama" and "I'd Rather Go Blind," both from 1967) to the unclassifiable (Randy Newman's gothic and lusty "Let's Burn Down the Cornfield" from 1974). It’s all here, drawn from James' incredible recording career on the Modern, Argo, Chess, Warner Bros., Fantasy, Island, Private Music, and RCA Victor imprints. Yeah, Etta James can sing the blues. She can sing anything she wants to, and there’s plenty of proof of that in this welcome (and long overdue) retrospective.

Few R&B singers have endured tragic travails on the monumental level that Etta James has and remain on earth to talk about it. The lady's no shrinking violet; her autobiography, Rage to Survive, describes her past (including numerous drug addictions) in sordid detail.
But her personal problems have seldom affected her singing. James has hung in there from the age of R&B and doo wop in the mid-'50s through soul's late-'60s heyday and right up into the '90s and 2000s (where her 1994 disc Mystery Lady paid loving jazz-based tribute to one of her idols, Billie Holiday). Etta James' voice has deepened over the years, coarsened more than a little, but still conveys remarkable passion and pain.
Jamesetta Hawkins was a child gospel prodigy, singing in her Los Angeles Baptist church choir (and over the radio) when she was only five years old under the tutelage of Professor James Earle Hines. She moved to San Francisco in 1950, soon teaming with two other girls to form a singing group. When she was 14, bandleader Johnny Otis gave the trio an audition. He particularly dug their answer song to Hank Ballard & the Midnighters' "Work With Me Annie."
Against her mother's wishes, the young singer embarked for L.A. to record "Roll With Me Henry" with the Otis band and vocalist Richard Berry in 1954 for Modern Records. Otis inverted her first name to devise her stage handle and dubbed her vocal group the Peaches (also Etta's nickname). "Roll With Me Henry," renamed "The Wallflower" when some radio programmers objected to the original title's connotations, topped the R&B charts in 1955.
The Peaches dropped from the tree shortly thereafter, but Etta James kept on singing for Modern throughout much of the decade (often under the supervision of saxist Maxwell Davis). "Good Rockin' Daddy" also did quite well for her later in 1955, but deserving follow-ups such as "W-O-M-A-N" and "Tough Lover" (the latter a torrid rocker cut in New Orleans with Lee Allen on sax) failed to catch on.
James landed at Chicago's Chess Records in 1960, signing with their Argo subsidiary. Immediately, her recording career kicked into high gear; not only did a pair of duets with her then-boyfriend (Moonglows lead singer Harvey Fuqua) chart, her own sides (beginning with the tortured ballad "All I Could Do Was Cry") chased each other up the R&B lists as well. Leonard Chess viewed James as a classy ballad singer with pop crossover potential, backing her with lush violin orchestrations for 1961's luscious "At Last" and "Trust in Me." But James' rougher side wasn't forsaken -- the gospel-charged "Something's Got a Hold on Me" in 1962, a kinetic 1963 live LP (Etta James Rocks the House) cut at Nashville's New Era Club, and a blues-soaked 1966 duet with childhood pal Sugar Pie De Santo, "In the Basement," ensured that.
Although Chess hosted its own killer house band, James traveled to Rick Hall's Fame studios in Muscle Shoals in 1967 and emerged with one of her all-time classics. "Tell Mama" was a searing slice of upbeat Southern soul that contrasted markedly with another standout from the same sessions, the spine-chilling ballad "I'd Rather Go Blind." Despite the death of Leonard Chess, Etta James remained at the label into 1975, experimenting toward the end with a more rock-based approach.
There were some mighty lean years, both personally and professionally, for Miss Peaches. But she got back on track recording-wise in 1988 with a set for Island, Seven Year Itch, that reaffirmed her Southern soul mastery. Her following albums have been a varied lot -- 1990's Sticking to My Guns was contemporary in the extreme; 1992's Jerry Wexler-produced The Right Time, for Elektra, was slickly soulful, and her most other '90s outings have explored jazz directions. In 1998, she also issued a holiday album, Etta James Christmas. She was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and in 2003 received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. That year also saw the release of her Let's Roll album, followed in 2004 by a CD of new blues performances, Blues to the Bone, both on RCA Records. James then shifted gears and released an album of pop standards, All the Way, on RCA in 2006.
In concert, Etta James is a sassy, no-holds-barred performer whose suggestive stage antics sometimes border on the obscene. She's paid her dues many times over as an R&B and soul pioneer; long may she continue to shock the uninitiated.

Big Brother And The Holding Company - The Lost Tapes [1995]
The Lost Tapes combines previously unreleased material with performances that have been floating around on bootlegs for years. Listening to these early live recordings from late 1966 and early 1967, it's hard to imagine that this is the same band that would level the audience at the Monterey Pop Festival — alongside Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding — and propel Janis Joplin into superstardom. The 26 songs are a loose mix of originals from their self-titled Mainstream album, along with cover versions of "Amazing Grace," "Hi Heel Sneakers," "Let the Good Times Roll," "I Know You Rider," and "Moanin' at Midnight." By far, the oddest cover is "Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill!," which musically has absolutely nothing in common with the version performed in the Russ Meyer film by the Bostweeds. The rambling spoken intro is longer than the actual song itself! Very weird! This material is unquestionably sloppy and miles away from the slick soul-rock Joplin would perform with Full Tilt Boogie and the Kozmic Blues Band after leaving Big Brother in late 1968. It's also what makes this relic so charming; hearing a young Janis Joplin not burdened with being the star, but just another member of the band, relaxed and playful. Airline's 2008 version of The Lost Tapes was licensed from Big Brother & the Holding Company, with 24-bit remastering and notes by drummer David Getz and guitarist Sam Andrew. ”

Long John Baldry's amazing musical legacy which if properly notated would fill a few pages in any rock encyclopedia. Long John's forty-five year career is a rich tapestry of recording, performing, great bands, discoverer of talent and actor. Long John is particularly known for his associations with former band members Rod Stewart and Elton John. Looking closely at LJB's musical tree you will discover that virtually every musician who came up in England during the 60's have some connection to LJB. Names like Ginger Baker, Jeff Beck, Brian Jones, Beatles, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart and The Rolling Stones are cemented in LJB's musical history. In fact, Eric Clapton has stated many times that he was inspired to pick up a guitar after seeing Long John Baldry perform in the early 1960s.
Undeniably, Long John was one of the founding 'Fathers of British Blues' in the 60s, and without his presence the scene, particularly the Blues scene, may have been quite different. Other snippets of musical history to support this claim include Long John's presence on the seminal album 'R&B From The Marquee' released in 1962 and is considered the first British Blues album. Did you know that when The Rolling Stones played their first public performance under that moniker in London/July 1962 that they opened for LJB at the Marquee Club. In April /64 The Beatles in their first worldwide television special 'Around the World With The Beatles', invited Long John Baldry to perform 'I Got My Mojo Workin' for that landmark broadcast. Since 1964 Long John has released 17 albums which have explored a vast variety of musical styles from Pop to Blues to Folk to Rock. 'Long John's Blues' (1964) was followed by the jazzy 'Looking at Long John' in 1966. On the heels of his number one hit in November 1967 'Let The Heartaches Begin' an album of Pop standards was released in Britain. Then there was a dramatic and successful switch back to his Blues/Rock roots with the release of It Ain't Easy, (by far his most popular album).

The acid test for a jam band is, of course, the live album, and San Francisco-based quartet Tea Leaf Green bill this one as their first "official" concert recording, disavowing an earlier self-released effort. The disc is also billed as the soundtrack to an identically titled and simultaneously released documentary film on DVD directed by Justin Kreutzmann (son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann). The movie captures the band's performance on May 19, 2006, at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO, interspersed with interview footage shot back home in San Francisco. Many jam bands try to discount their roots in '60s psychedelic rock, but the members of Tea Leaf Green are unabashed about extolling their taste for it and for the '70s classic rock that grew out of it. Their music is reminiscent of the Dead, with certain caveats. They are one guitarist and one drummer short of the earlier band's instrumentation, which leads to greater prominence for keyboardist Trevor Garrod, and their rhythm section is more inclined toward R&B and funk than the Dead's. Also, there is little of the Dead's country music background in Tea Leaf Green. But Garrod, who is also the lead singer, has a light tenor often reminiscent of Jerry Garcia's, and the jamming, despite revealing a knowledge of both the Allman Brothers Band and Weather Report, suggests the Dead, too. Garrod's lyrics are full of nature imagery and vague philosophizing, with a hint of religion (two songs here mention the Devil in the titles), his primary influence naturally being the Dead's Robert Hunter. But the words are less important than the group's interplay on this date, and that interplay is infectious enough to please any jam band fan. ~ William Ruhlmann
