JOHN LEE HOOKER & CANNED HEAT -Hooker 'N' Heat - ( MFSL 2 CD Ultra Disc)
John Lee Hooker And Canned Heat - Hooker 'N' Heat -( MFSL 2 CD Ultra Disc) and The Healer (MFSL UDCD 567)
Canned Heat are hands down the best back-up band John Lee Hooker has recorded with since those hot shot country groups that blazed anonymously through the studios in the early Fifties. And despite the cover billing, they are very much a back-up group, for this is really a John Lee Hooker album, and one of his best in a long while.
Much of the credit goes to the Heat's planning and programming. They have caught Hooker in a variety of settings: soloist in his own characteristic idiom; playing a fantastic series of duets with the late Al Wilson; and fronting the entire band (minus Hite, who worked on the project, and spread his infectious good humor, from the control booth) for some righteous, raunchy boogie. Canned Heat have made no secret of the fact that their entire boogie series, spread over some three albums, draws its inspiration from Hooker's work, so the combination is a natural. The second album in this two-record set is given over to band numbers, and it's the best of the two.
Wilson's presence doesn't need to be overadvertised; he is very strong throughout, mostly in a very subtle way. Hooker has noted his admiration for Wilson several times, and their generation-spanning empathy is very evident here, especially on side two, which is given over mostly to Hooker with Wilson's harp and piano. Hooker remarks. "I don't know how that boy keeps up with me." It's no easy trick, keeping up with John Lee, but that's just what Alan does, laying down some amazing playing, especially on harp, in the process.
Vestine, who had recently rejoined the band when these sides were cut, is also very strong, even though he like Wilson is subservient to Hooker's thing. Henry once told an interviewer his greatest ambition was to record with John Lee Hooker and with Albert Ayler. With the release of Ayler's Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe, and Hooker 'N Heat, Henry has fulfilled his ambitions at a very young age; there's no place for him to go but up.
Mention should be made of the earth-moving power of Antonio de la Barreda and Adolfo de la Parra. the Heat's south-of-the-border rhythm section, and of the engineering, which may still be a little too clean for Hooker, but then, nobody records in barns anymore. Hooker fans are going to dig this record, and so are Heat fans, and that includes a lot of people. Let 'em boogie!

BIOGRAPHY
by Bruce Eder
A hard-luck blues band of the '60s, Canned Heat was founded by blues historians and record collectors Alan Wilson and Bob Hite. They seemed to be on the right track and played all the right festivals (including Monterey and Woodstock, making it very prominently into the documentaries about both) but somehow never found a lasting audience.
Certainly their hearts were in the right place. Canned Heat's debut album -- released shortly after their appearance at Monterey -- was every bit as deep into the roots of the blues as any other combo of the time mining similar turf, with the exception of the original Paul Butterfield band. Hite was nicknamed "The Bear" and stalked the stage in the time-honored tradition of Howlin' Wolf and other large-proportioned bluesmen. Wilson was an extraordinary harmonica player, with a fat tone and great vibrato. His work on guitar, especially in open tunings (he played on Son House's rediscovery recordings of the mid-'60s, incidentally) gave the band a depth and texture that most other rhythm players could only aspire to. Henry Vestine -- another dyed-in-the-wool record collector -- was the West Coast's answer to Michael Bloomfield and capable of fretboard fireworks at a moment's notice.
Canned Heat's breakthrough moment occurred with the release of their second album, establishing them with hippie ballroom audiences as the "kings of the boogie." As a way of paying homage to the musician they got the idea from in the first place, they later collaborated on an album with John Lee Hooker that was one of the elder bluesman's most successful outings with a young white (or black, for that matter) combo backing him up. After two big chart hits with "Goin' Up the Country" and an explosive version of Wilbert Harrison's "Let's Work Together," Wilson died under mysterious (probably drug-related) circumstances in 1970, and Hite carried on with various reconstituted versions of the band until his death just before a show in 1981, from a heart seizure.
Still, the surviving members -- led by drummer Adolfo "Fito" de la Parra -- continued touring and recording, recruiting new vocalist Walter Trout; he was replaced in 1985 by James Thornbury, who fronted the band for the next decade. After Thornbury exited in 1995, Canned Heat tapped Robert Lucas to assume lead vocal duties; they soon recorded The Canned Heat Blues Band, which sadly was Vestine's last recording with the group -- he died in Paris in December 1997 in the wake of the band's recent tour. Boogie 2000 followed two years later.

Coming off the successes of Mirage and Snow Goose, 1976 saw Camel release
another masterful work called Moonmadness. Each member of the band contributed
compositions to the album which reached #15 in the music charts. Camel had an
extensive tour of the United Kingdom in March and April of 1976 to coincide with
the release of this new album. The addition of Mel Collins on Sax and Flute had
changed the Camel sound. His inclusion in the band at the beginning of this tour
had given Camel more of a jazz feel. This was also the first time that Camel had
used film as a visual component of their shows. As Andy Latimer told Melody
Maker, "This is the first time we've used films, and I don't want us to get into
it too much. ...We're not a very bopping band, so it's nice for the audience to
have something to watch". A short break followed the 17 concert, U.K. tour after
which Camel came to California for a performance in San Francisco at the
Boardinghouse on June 26th. This was their first US performance in over a year
and their last until February of 1979 when they again returned to play in
California. Six of the seven new Moonmadness album songs were played that
night. The concert begins with two of the new entries. The audience is then told
that they are about to get, "a little slice of the Snow Goose". The first three
songs of that all instrumental album are then played with received with great
enthusiasm. The band returns to Moonmadness material playing Air Born and Chord
Change. They then proceed to The White Rider from Mirage, Lunar Sea from the
new album, two more from Snow Goose and then a final selection from Moonmadness.
Overall, a great performance hitting all the highlights of the band's material
to that point.

Stella Blue > end of show were patched with Jerry Moore's MC>D>CD (AKG D1000s>Sony TC-152) audience recording.
Notes:
The folks that circulated this show scoured high and low for the best possible version (incl. ALL of the "usual suspects"), and the best copy ANYONE had was MR>C2>D, so that's what was used. I have followed up on this as well, including a comparison of the alleged
"MR>PCM>DAT>CD" version, and have concluded that this copy is the best that's "out."

GARY MOORE - ALL THE BEST
Acknowledged as one of the finest musicians that the British Isles has ever produced, and with a career that dated back to the 1960s, there were few musical genres that Gary Moore had not turned his adroit musical hand to. Gracing the line-ups of several notable rock bands, Thin Lizzy, Colosseum II and (The Original) Skid Row, in his time, he also established himself as a world-class guitarist, with few equals. Gary was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on April 4th 1952. Like many others, he was turned on to rock and roll first through hearing Elvis Presley, and then via The Beatles. Seeing the likes of Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in his hometown in the mid-60s opened up to him the rich world of The Blues. Hearing the art of the blues guitar performed by such lauded exponents as Peter Green fired Moore's nascent talent, and it wasn't long before he was being hailed as a teen musical prodigy. Indeed, it was Green himself who helped foster Moore's career, a debt that was repaid handsomely when Gary cut his warm and heartfelt tribute to his mentor, the 'Blues For Greeny' album, released in 1995....gary-moore.com
