San Francisco-based jam band Tea Leaf Green got their start in the relationship between guitarist Josh Clark and drummer Scott Rager, who played in a high-school band together in Arcadia, CA. After graduation, Rager enrolled at San Francisco State College, where he met bassist Ben Chambers. When Clark moved to San Francisco, the three began playing together as a trio. Their first paying gig was attended by Trevor Garrod, a singer/songwriter and keyboard player who had moved to San Francisco looking for other musicians to play with. Garrod met the three others, and soon they were playing together as a quartet. They built a following in Northern California and self-released the albums Tea Leaf Green, Midnight on the Reservoir (2001), Friday June 6, 2003: Live at Slim's, San Francisco CA (September 17, 2003), Living in Between (February 7, 2004), and Live at the Independent (2004). Eventually, they extended their touring nationwide, including a performance at the Bonnaroo Festival in 2005.
Signing to Reincarnate Music, they issued their first national release, Taught to Be Proud, on November 15, 2005, as they played shows opening for Gov't Mule and Trey Anastasio. On May 19, 2006, they appeared at the Fox Theater in Boulder, CO, and the show was filmed for a home video. It was issued by SCI Fidelity Records on October 31, 2006, as Rock 'n' Roll Band, both as a separately released CD and DVD. Further touring found Tea Leaf Green opening for Dave Matthews Band and Bruce Hornsby, as well as headlining on their own. Chambers left the band in November 2007 and was replaced by Reed Mathis, formerly of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. In 2008, a move to Surfdog Records led to the re-release of the first three studio albums, Tea Leaf Green, Midnight on the Reservoir, and Living in Between, as the triple-CD compilation Seeds on April 22, 2008. Surfdog reissued Taught to Be Proud with bonus tracks on June 3, 2008, and released a new Tea Leaf Green studio album, Raise Up the Tent, on July 22, 2008.

by William Ruhlmann With Seeds, Surfdog Records reissues the first three studio albums by San Francisco jam band Tea Leaf Green, discs the group self-released during the first half of the 2000s. The self-titled debut album is a song-based collection dominated by singer/keyboard player Trevor Garrod, who sings in his light tenor of his love of the Bay Area and California in general, as well as making many references to the ingestion of intoxicants. This is party music, in other words, but the style, an eclectic mixture of '70s influences, is expressed in relatively tame and tentative playing. One noticeable antecedent is Spirit, and Garrod in particular has some of the jazz-rock fusion style of that band's keyboard player John Locke. There always seems to be a tension in the studio albums by a jam band between the playing of actual compositions and just playing, and on Tea Leaf Green's second album, Midnight on the Reservoir, the jamming wins out. The first three tracks, "Reservoir," "Sex in the '70s," and "Panspermic De-Evolution," last more than 24 minutes between them, and the last two are practically instrumentals, their lyrics consisting of little more than the titles chanted a few times. The band's proclaimed love of '70s music comes out in the playing, and such expected influences as the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band are apparent. But Tea Leaf Green love a lot of '70s music, and here Garrod recalls not so much Locke as Joe Zawinul and Chick Corea when he's being jazzy and, when he and the band are moving in more of a pop/rock direction, Deodato and Edgar Winter. After they get through stretching out at the start of the disc, the players let Garrod contribute some real songs, and he takes things toward country-pop in numbers like "Moonshine" and "Papa's in the Backroom" that recall what Deadheads used to like to refer to as the Grateful Dead's "cowboy" mini-set of Bob Weir-sung songs such as "Me and My Uncle" and "Mama Tried." Sticking to the Dead influence, the album ends with the spacy instrumental "Sleepwalker." After Midnight on the Reservoir, Tea Leaf Green inevitably released their first live album, Friday June 6, 2003: Live at Slim's, San Francisco CA, which may have allowed them to get some more jamming out of their system, since the third studio album, Living in Between, which followed less than five months later, is again more of a song-based collection, albeit one that sounds far more confident than Tea Leaf Green. Seeds thus demonstrates the group's growth and development in its early years, providing later fans with a sense of where its more accomplished later music came from.

TEA LEAF GREEN - BEREKLEY, CA. - 12/29/2004

The acid test for a jam band is, of course, the live album, and San Francisco-based quartet Tea Leaf Green bill this one as their first "official" concert recording, disavowing an earlier self-released effort. The disc is also billed as the soundtrack to an identically titled and simultaneously released documentary film on DVD directed by Justin Kreutzmann (son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann). The movie captures the band's performance on May 19, 2006, at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO, interspersed with interview footage shot back home in San Francisco. Many jam bands try to discount their roots in '60s psychedelic rock, but the members of Tea Leaf Green are unabashed about extolling their taste for it and for the '70s classic rock that grew out of it. Their music is reminiscent of the Dead, with certain caveats. They are one guitarist and one drummer short of the earlier band's instrumentation, which leads to greater prominence for keyboardist Trevor Garrod, and their rhythm section is more inclined toward R&B and funk than the Dead's. Also, there is little of the Dead's country music background in Tea Leaf Green. But Garrod, who is also the lead singer, has a light tenor often reminiscent of Jerry Garcia's, and the jamming, despite revealing a knowledge of both the Allman Brothers Band and Weather Report, suggests the Dead, too. Garrod's lyrics are full of nature imagery and vague philosophizing, with a hint of religion (two songs here mention the Devil in the titles), his primary influence naturally being the Dead's Robert Hunter. But the words are less important than the group's interplay on this date, and that interplay is infectious enough to please any jam band fan. ~ William Ruhlmann
