GOV'T MULE – Stoned Side of the Mule Vol. 1 – Black Friday RSD (2014)
Gov’t Mule – Stoned Side of the Mule Vol. 1 – Black Friday RSD (2014)
Gov’t Mule goes into curveball mode for Black Friday and delves into their vaults for a limited run, vinyl-only release of highlights from its fabled Halloween 2009 performance at the Tower Theater outside of Philadelphia. The show featured a long and varied set of impassioned, expertly executed Rolling Stones covers as only the Mule can deliver, with special guests Jackie Greene (Phil Lesh & Friends, Black Crowes, Trigger Hippy) ans saxophonist Steve Elson (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Radiohead, David Bowie). The songs on Vol. 1 are newly edited and mastered, with the vinyl lacquers cut from the old Stax Records lathe in Memphis.

Allman Brothers Band
Allman Brothers Band
Beacon Theater 3/20/09
They say lightning never strikes twice in the same place, but they're wrong! Many people thought it was virtually impossible for the second ABB show with Eric Clapton to equal the first, but in many ways this show surpasses Thursday's concert. There seems to be no ceiling to what the Allman Brothers Band was capable of in this Beacon run!
Check out the first set, a blockbuster that would be a worthy second set to most shows, complete with a "Mountain Jam" sandwich to open and close the set. "44 Blues" and "Gambler's Roll" provide some deep blues, and the end sequence of "Ain't Wastin' Time No More>Mountain Jam Reprise" is just as good as it sounds. Oteil's solo bass version of "Little Martha" adds a different twist to the Duane Allman classic, which had been played as a duet by Warren and Derek earlier in the run.
The second set is Clapton time, and Slowhand seems relaxed, comfortable and ready to jam. The Derek and the Dominoes classics sound just as good, if not better, than Thursday, but there are a few surprises in store. This performance of "Stormy Monday" might be the best ever, from Gegg's passionate vocals to the blues guitar master class being put on by Derek, Eric and Warren. Clapton soars even higher on this version of "Dreams" than he did on Thursday, and his jazzy explorations on "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" show Slowhand venturing far from his blues-rock comfort zone and proving that he still has his mojo. This "Layla" encore may be even more emotional and powerful than the one from the previous show, if that's possible.
Another historic must-have show!

This theater show was one of the few "An Evening with …" two-set shows of the summer, and the band made the most of this intimate, 100-year old venue. The whole town was excited about the ABB’s visit, and it shows in the great audience reaction. The first set is opens and closes with "Mountain Jam," with plenty of killer playing in between, including great versions of "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" and "High Cost of Low Living." The second set features such rarities as "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Into the Mystic," plus a rocking version of "Jessica," and special guest Susan Tedeschi sitting in on "Don’t Think Twice (It’s Alright)."

Many people wondered how the Allman Brothers would top Saturday's Fox show, but they were up to the challenge. The first set featured five songs over ten minutes in length, including top-notch versions of "Desdemona" and "Hoochie Coochie Man," plus Warren Haynes finishing off the magnificent "Dreams" trifecta. "Stormy Monday" shows why Gregg Allman is still considered one of the finest blues singers ever. Rob Barraco adds immensely to fantastic takes on "The Same Thing" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," Oteil pays a beautiful tribute to Ray Charles in his bass solo, and a thunderous "Whipping Post" brings the Fox run to an earth-shattering conclusion!

Recorded during the bands Paradise Theater tour, this show sounds great! Everyone is in fine voice and the instrumentation is spot on. My only gripe would be a lack of earlier material but it's a small gripe. A lot of 1980's hits here that were the soundtrack to my generations teenage years. You couldn't go to a school dance, roller rink, or arcade without hearing most of these songs. For me this was the last Styx abum I bought, when Kilroy came out I was more than a little disapointed. I did see the tour which didn't go over real well in Detroit, during the theatrical parts the audience would constantly scream for the band to .."Shut up and Play Some F@#*ing Music!" http://fp.io/746216a6/

FLEETWOOD MAC - THE BLUES YEARS
This 50-track, three-CD collection brings together anything of any consequence that Peter Green's group did in the way of a 12-bar. It includes the whole of their first two albums, the hit singles Albatross and Man Of The World, the comparative flops Black Magic Woman and Need Your Love So Bad, a few nuggets from Blues Jam At Chess wherein they skirmished with the likes of Willie Dixon and Otis Span; it even has the nerve to appropriate one Chicken Shack track in the shape of Christine McVie's terrific I'd Rather Go Blind from 1969. It's interesting to reflect just how many blues records the extended Mac family were responsible for putting in the charts in the late '60s and heartening to report how little here has dated. Peter Green's ability to submerge his ego and reluctance to go in for grandstanding when the instrumental break came around is wholly vindicated by material as brooding and adult as Love That Burns (in which he seems to play without touching the strings) and soulful as Need Your Love So Bad, wherein he's the equal of Little Willie John. McVie and Fleetwood's no-nonsense approach to rhythm, learned in ministering to the boozier patrons of the college circuit, is admirably suited to lifting Jeremy Spencer's repertoire of Elmore James impressions above the run-of-the-mill. There are more spectacular relics of the Home Counties' affair with sweet home Chicago but for blues with a feeling this takes some beating.
