NOTES

Phish kicked off their fall 1999 tour in Vancouver, followed by a two-night stand at The Gorge and a Sunday show in Portland.  The tour then turned toward the Sawtooths for a Tuesday night show at Boise State University before continuing in California and beyond.  The BSU Pavilion was opened in 1982 as the Boise State Broncos’ basketball arena with a concert capacity of about 13,000.  Tickets for Phish cost $26.50 with a GA floor and reserved seating in the stands.  This was the band’s second show at this venue (they had opened summer 1995 there) and their last show to-date in Idaho.  Given the days off on both sides, the seven hour drive from Portland and the ten-plus hour drive to Shoreline for the next shows, many opted to skip this gig but those who took the trip were justly rewarded and those who didn’t will never forget it.

Boise’s Set I kicked off with Chalk Dust Torture and featured The Curtain > Waste, a dramatic sequence of Loving Cup > What’s The Use? and Wading In The Velvet Sea > Farmhouse, and a hot Taste.  The mostly non-stop set II began with the first Peaches en Regalia in more than two years, followed by an AC/DC Bag for the ages.  This Bag was a tour de force of multi-modal improvisation culminating in a psychedelic freakout so far Out that swirling vacuum ambiance was the only way to wrap it.  The Boise Bag spilled over into a standout Gumbo with a slow funk Another One Bites The Dust jam that cemented Boise’s snooze-you-lose status.  A frenetic Down With Disease > Frankenstein (with a nod to Pink Floyd) capped the set.  The encore was Simple with a live fade-out that gave the band time to move downstage for an A cappella Hello My Baby to close out a magical night at BSU.

ROBIN TROWER - Live Boston - April 24th 2016

Robin Trower - Live Boston April 24th 2016 @224kbps

Pretty good audience recording here of a man who NEVER EVER wastes a note. This guy is writing some of the best music he's ever done at 71 years old. His last four albums are better than 90% of anything else OUT THERE. I only wish, that he could drop the songs that he has to play and would be able to substitute those out for stuff from "20th Century Blues", "Something's About to Change", "Victims Of The Fury", "Back It Up",  "The Playful Heart", hell it endless.  The man is an icon, Too bad all this great music he's been giving us for the last 20 years will seldom be heard. Hope he sells millions of copies of his latest..oh wait nope...nope...Taylor Smith is going to release a new album sometime in the next 12 years and all forms of media had better concentrate on that instead of Mr. Trower...Well you have been warned!!!! LITTLE VILLAGE - Warfield Theatre, San Francisco, CA - June 22, 1992

Saturday, June 18, 2016
Little Village / Warfield Theatre, SF - Westwood One In Concert #92-26
Little Village was a short-lived project by John Hiatt, Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner.  They left behind one so-so album and several radio broadcasts.  I know they did a BBC broadcast, a WBCN-FM (Boston), and a WXRT (Chicago), but their most well circulated show is this Westwood One syndicated show from the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco.  The show was picked up by European bootleggers in the mid-90s, appearing as "Living Action," "Solar Sex Panel," "Anywhere USA," "On The Border," and "Live San Francisco '92"...and most recently resurfaced as a gray market release called "The Action In Frisco" that's easily available on Amazon.

All of these come from the Westwood One In Concert broadcast.  I've only spotted one single syndication of this show, as an In Concert for the week of June 22, 1992,  but there may be other syndication dates out there as Westwood One usually did more than one broadcast of a show.

While this is sort of "old hat" with all the multiple versions out there, I wanted a copy of for my archives of the original show and figure someone else might want it, too.  So, here's the original broadcast, with commercials edited out.

The bootleggers listed the date as December 7, 1992, or April 7, 1992.  I'm not 100% sure which is correct, but Little Village definitely played the Warfield on April 7, so that's the most likely date.

Flac files of wavs...unfortunately the cue sheet was missing on this one so all you get is 300 dpi scans of the CDs.

original notes:
This is one of the last shows before Buckingham and Nicks joined the band and changed the sound and direction of Fleetwood Mac once again.
So many personnel changes over the years had given the band an ever-evolving sound that seemed to subtly change with each new album.
This incarnation was on tour to promote their then new LP, "Heroes Are Hard to Find".
They found themselves in the bizarre position of having to declare themselves "The Real Fleetwood Mac".
Thousands of people had been duped into paying money to see what they thought was the "real" band. Thankfully, this didn't last long!
Enjoy the sounds of what was, for a brief moment - the real "Fleetwood Mac"!

JAZZ IS DEAD with Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett, Keswick Theater Glenside, PA - March 23, 2001

Jazz Is Dead with Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett, 3-23-2001
These photos are from the show at the Keswick Theater. This is another Jazz is Dead show but it has Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett from Little Feat opening and then playing with Jazz Is Dead. So I guess you could call this one Jazz Is Little Dead Feat, or something like that. Anyway it's pretty cool and has great sound quality as well.

JOHN MAYALL’S Bluesbreakers – Live in 1967: Volume Two

John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers – Live in 1967: Volume Two (2016)

Volume TwoThe release of Live in 1967: Volume Two does more than complement its companion piece released last year. With such archiving taking place coincidental with John Mayall’s continuing activities in the studio and on the road, “The Godfather of British Blues” reaffirms his legacy as much as his commitment to this music.
As with its predecessor, this collection of performances has been taken from audience recordings by Tom Huissen at various clubs including the Marquee and Klook’s Kleek during the spring of this epochal year. While Mayall’s co-producer/engineer Eric Corne admits in the abbreviated liner notes “the final result is certainly not hi-fidelity,” the rough-hewn sonics suit this vintage music, much of it in raw form due to the mere three months of the group’s tenure together. Right from the beginning, on “Tears in My Eyes,” however, it is Peter Green’s guitar solos that cut through most clearly; whether that’s the result of Corne’s technical expertise or simply the maintenance of the band’s mix via his mastering, it exemplifies the man’s stature within, no doubt, the scene of the time, Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and indeed in truth, the history of British blues.
The successor to guitarist Eric Clapton, who left Mayall’s employ after his second stint to form Cream, Green brought a distinctive style that informed not just his own playing, but the fast-evolving sound of the Bluesbreakers. As such, while the album of that name — nicknamed ‘Beano’ for the comic ‘Slowhand’ was reading in the cover shot — is largely regarded as definitive, the first and only studio album with Green, A Hard Road (1967), not only redeemed Mayall’s choice to enlist him, it validated Green’s position in the hierarchy of guitar heroes of the time, including EC, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. Even more importantly, the album, as well as continuous live gigging, furthered the evolution of Mayall’s vision.
As an indication of that prestige, the guitarist’s original instrumental “Greeny” appears here along with a select few of Mayall originals, including “Please Don’t Tell” and “Chicago Line” otherwise, classic blues such as “Stormy Monday” and “Double Trouble” as well as a tune from Mayall’s idol J.B Lenoir, “Talk to Your Daughter” comprise the baker’s dozen cuts here. The overly-trebly presence of the mix doesn’t allow much more than shadows to emanate from the bass of John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood (the eventual founders of Fleetwood Mac with Green) and that may, in fact, be the greatest shortfall of the sound quality; nevertheless, the unity of the quartet permeates the musicianship, making Live in 1967 Volume Two much more than a mere curio or simply the sum of its parts: hearing it carries an impact in direct proportion to its historical significance.
Although there is no doubt to the legitimacy of his designation as “The Godfather of British Blues,” John Mayall would do well to oversee more archive release like Live in 1967 Volume Two. Given his personal involvement in such details as sonic restoration (with Corne) and packaging, whether he enlists assistance to initiate such a long-term campaign, Mayall reaffirms his legacy and cements his reputation for successive generations.
Personnel: John Mayall: vocals, harmonica, organ; Peter Green: lead guitar; Mick Fleetwood: drums; John McVie: bass; Ronnie Jones: lead vocal (track 9 only)

WEATHER REPORT – The Agora, Columbus, Ohio, October 17th 1972

Weather Report – The Agora, Columbus, Ohio, October 17th 1972 (2015)

Weather ReportWeather Report are widely regarded as America’s finest ever jazz fusion band. Originally recorded for FM broadcast, this superb live set at The Agora in Columbus, Ohio, on October 17th, 1972, was taped a few months after the release of their classic 1972 album I Sing the Body Electric, and features Joe Zawinul (keyboards), Wayne Shorter (saxophone), Miroslav Vitous (bass), Eric Gravátt (drums), and Dom Um Romão (percussion).
Beginning with a tight (17 min.) “Unknown Soldier” the band slips into “Vertical Invader” (17+ minutes), and then into “Improvisation” that continues with a similar feel. “Percussion>Directions” begins with some keyboard sounds along with Gravatt’s relatively straight drumming, with Romao adding some nice percussion flourishes. On “Directions”,Shorter comes in for some typically minimalist stabs of his sax with Zawinul coloring things, with the rest of the band adding density to this well known tune. For whatever reason the tune fades out around the 2 minute mark, and then fades in rapidly, which detracts from the effect of the music.
Disc 2 begins with a band introduction by Gravatt after the first portion of the concert. and then fades into “Improvisation>Dr. Honoris Causa” (tracks 2, 3), which is another chance for the band to show what WR was capable of during this period in their development–plenty of keyboard, sax, and percussion–in a swirling piece of music. The band then begins another “Improvisation” (which flows into “In A Silent Way>It’s About That Time”) with Zawinul’s keyboards sounding like he’s from outer space and Romao’s percussion sounding very organic. Gravatt and Shorter both add texture to this improvisation which sounds very much from it’s time before the band’s sound morphed into somewhat funkier areas later on. The short “…Silent Way” is (obviously) reminiscent of what Davis was exploring during this time. “It’s About…” continues the same open, impressionistic feel. The music has an open feeling–very expansive–with some nice percussion from Romao, and more shards from Shorter adding to the mix which builds and subsides very nicely. A very nice (10 minutes) version of these pieces. Track 7 is “Percussion”, with Gravatt out front showing why Zawiinul thought he was the best drummer for the band. His muscular, precise solo at the start is a nice intro for the rest of the band to follow. This is a very tight (7 minutes) tune that unfortunately fades out, into “Orange Lady” (track 8), which is well known to fans of this era of the band. Sounding very upbeat at first and then slowing things down, the band flowing together, this too is a nice version of this tune. Things end with “Percussion”, with Romao using several instruments for an exotic feel–an organic way to end things.
