David Grisman – Quintet ’80 [Deluxe Edition] (2013)
Throughout his career, David Grisman has performed music that crosses between many boundaries, from “new acoustic” folk to bluegrass and swing-oriented jazz. In early 1980 Grisman recorded the first of four studio albums for Warner Brothers Records. Quintet ’80 features Grisman’s string group (which also includes violinist Darol Anger, Mike Marshall on mandolin, guitar and violin, Mark O’Connor on violin and guitar, and bassist Rob Wasserman) playing six of Grisman’s diverse originals, an obscure tune, and a brief rendition of John Coltrane’s “Naima.”
The original LP has been out of print for nearly three decades and this Deluxe Edition presents all of the original master takes plus five previously unissued alternate takes, all newly transferred to the highest quality sound format available (24 bit, 96khz) at Acoustic Oasis.

Those who don't pay attention to the jam band underground may be excused for wondering why such luminaries as Del and Ronnie McCoury, Taj Mahal, Béla Fleck, Sam Bush, Jo-El Sonnier, Jerry Douglas, Lucinda Williams, and Waylon Jennings appear on an album by Leftover Salmon, but those in the know will be aware of the Colorado act's burgeoning reputation. Throughout the '90s, the group quietly built up a following with a series of solid records and constant touring. By the end of the decade, they had become a popular cult band and were on a major label, which gave them the opportunity to record the star-studded Nashville Sessions. Every song on the album features a duet of some sort, and producer Randy Scruggs was able to secure the big names, which certainly gives the album character. Still, the set wouldn't be much more than glorified stunt casting if it didn't give Leftover Salmon an opportunity to flex their muscles, to illustrate how far they've come over the years. Not only are they working with strong material (something that hasn't always happened on their previous albums), but Scruggs keeps things clean and simple, putting the spotlight on the music itself. Throughout it all, Leftover Salmon successfully keep pace with their heavyweight guests and, in the process, they turn in the most charming album of their career to date.
BIOGRAPHY

The self-described "polyethnic cajun slamgrass" group Leftover Salmon formed in Colorado in the early '90s as a merger of two area acts, the Left Hand String Band and the Salmonheads. Comprised of vocalist/guitarist/washboard player Vince Herman, banjoist Mark Vann, mandolinist/guitarist Drew Emmit, bassist Tye North and drummer Michael Wooten, the band's good-timey earned a grassroots following on the festival circuit and resulted in their 1993 self-released debut Bridges to Bert. Ask the Fish, a 1995 live effort recorded at Boulder, Colorado's Fox Theatre, helped Leftover Salmon earn a deal with the Hollywood label, which in 1997 released the group's major label bow Euphoria. The Nashville Sessions followed two years later. Upon issuing the Live album in spring 2002, Leftover Salmon experienced some restructuring within the band. North and Wooten were no longer part of Leftover Salmon. Greg Garrison stepped in to play bass, Jose Martinez was added on drums and newcomer Bill McKay joined on keyboards.
