Row D right in front of Andy just 5m back from the stage.
This was a toughie. Everything was set for a great gig. Great mates, great recording location and we even found a great new pub beforehand. So, all was good ... and then the gig started.
I immediately noticed an annoying 'buzz' coming from the right hand PA stack about 8m off to our right. It seemed as if something in the stack was damaged and it 'buzzed' quite annoyingly on certain frequencies. The sound guys appeared to be aware that something was wrong as the sound kept phasing in and out, and left and right - throughout the gig! It is probably at its worst at the start of 'Lunar Sea' after which I got so annoyed that I actually left my seat and went to complain to the sound guy and ultimately spoke directly with the house manager himself. This was taking a big chance I know but I have never experienced anything like this in a gig before - and certainly not one that I was recording - I mean, how inconsiderate! (oh yes, tongue firmly in cheek here). It transpired that I was not the only person to complain during the gig and many others did the same after the show. The band were also pretty unhappy, especially Colin Bass who expressed his ire to me in no uncertain terms after the show. Andy wasn't happy either and he mentions this in his post-show interview.
I cannot sress enough that the various 'phasing', 'buzzing' and general 'fuzz' heard throughout this recording is NOTHING to do with my recording equipment (as my previous offerings on Dime will testify). This is an accurate reflection of what we actually heard from our seating location directly from the front of house PA. After listening, perhaps you will understand why I, along with the others I have already mentioned, took the somewhat drastic steps to complain directly to the house management during the gig itself!
Given the massive problems they clearly had with the PA I am quite comfortable and somewhat surprised with how the recording turned out. Maybe a couple of other recordings from different locations of the same show might surface. We'll then at least be able to compare and contrast the different listening/recording experiences.
All of that said, it was great gig with the band on top, top form. It's just a shame that they were so badly let down by the front of house PA system, which of course they have no control over! Not a lot you can do I guess?

After the show I waited around with about 20 or so other fans and we were duly rewarded when the whole band came out to have a chat with us all. As you will hear this was in the big, 'boomy' entrance hall by the merch desk. As I had my recording equipment I took a chance and asked Andy if he would be good enough to record an impromptu interview. As you will also hear I was glad I asked.
I should point out that I am by no means an interviewer and this was all 'off the cuff' - the conversation drifted a little as others got involved but I think I kept it pretty much on track. The end result is a fairly interesting 10 minute interview where amongst other things, Andy discusses:- the current festival based tour, getting back on the road again, talcum powder, aging and his arthritis, the pain of losing some band members this year, finishing off an album for Guy LeBlanc and potential future Camel releases.
Note: My heart skipped a beat when Andy talks about people recording gigs, and there's a brief pause where he probably realises that that's very probably what I have just done!! Oh dear!

PREPARING THE RECORDING
I recorded this show standing on the balcony slightly to the right.
The first time I tried to record from above. It was a bit of a guess, but it turned out fine.
Sound is clean and clear. Slight chatter from the people to the left, but not during the songs.
I recorded this straight from the mic without the pre-amp, because itÕs not working properly.
So no bass roll off. Dynamics are still pretty good I think.
Tracks were slightly EQ-ed and volume was a bit corrected, but I kept the dynamics in tact.
I use no compression. After correction, tracks were split at sector boundaries.
Flacs are tagged for convenient playback on compatible systems.
ABOUT THE CONCERT
Camel did a short Summer Tour this year, being revived in 2013 after AndyÕs illness. This time
old material was prominent, with the album Moonmadness as the centre of the show. The last song is
dedicated to two ex Camel players, Chris Rainbow and Guy LeBlanc who died recently.
The ambience was fantastic, and the band was good. Some mistakes, most notable during Uneven Song.
The crowd cheered for over 7 minutes after the second encore, but they didnÕt come back for more.

boombox's notes july 2015:
These annual mini Camel tours are quickly becoming one of my highlights of every year since 2013. Unsurprisingly, these shows all pretty much sold out, but I got my ticket as soon as they were announced, so bagged the end of the second row in front of a stack, thinking it a great position to get nice and close to Andy et al, and hopefully where I could get a good recording and some photos and video. Unfortunately, the Forum staff were not the friendliest, pouncing on anyone they saw with a camera. This was a pity as they really did put on a full multi-media show, with excellent lights and some fine 70s-style projections, which would have been lovely to share. As for the setlist, it was a complete change from the previous two outings, with no Snow Goose at all (though St Alban's the previous night got some in a second encore). A much rockier set (Andy told me afterwards that they were trying to do a setlist better suited to the various festivals they are playing this summer) and tough to pick favourites, but special mention has to go to 'Ice', which got a trully well-deserved standing ovation and a fine, bittersweet, 'Long Goodbyes', which featured projections of Chris Rainbow and Guy Le Blanc, who we lost earlier this year. I've included a small folder of the few half decent pics I managed to snap as a memento for those there who weren't so lucky!
As for the recording, it's pretty good, I think, despite the PA being suspended quite high, so back in about row 10 might have been a better location. To compensate, I added a bit of a mid-range hump and took out some of the bass - when Denis hit the floor toms in the louder passages, it was
causing my chest to vibrate quite uncomfortably - it's a miracle my mics coped with it. I had to reduce the level of some of the whoops, hollers and clapping of my very enthusiastic neighbour and used just a tiny bit of compression to tame some of the peaks. As always, my 24 bit masters are available for anyone wanting to do a remaster/matrix project: just make sure it's shared here for all to benefit, please.

Notes from the Re-Master: This was generally a good quality recording of a radio broadcast, only a minor degree of noise reduction was necessary to remove hiss which was distracting during quiet segments and solos. However, major variations in volume occurred throughout the show and were quite noticeable. In the remastered version, these are corrected. The last 25 minutes of the show also displayed an imbalance between the two channels which was fixed. Pops and Clicks were also removed and a little tonality adjustment was made in some places because of a "muddy" sound; the result of insufficient treble.

Notes from the PRRP Re-Master: As good as this recording is, there were still a number of flaws that needed correcting. The speed of the recording was found to be in error and was fixed. A gentle noise reduction was used to allow more subtle detail to be heard. Lots of tape clicks and pops were found and repaired. Because of the venueacoustics, an adjustment to the tonality was made. Dynamics were adjusted and channel balance was corrected. Finally, the show was tracked using standard live and studio references.

This can be heard during the quiet section of Lady Fantasy.

My second Camel show in six months - could it get any better? Well, yes, I think it could! Another packed out venue full of generally respectful music fans come to see Andy Latimer & Co deliver a lesson in how to do a first class show and have a ball doing it. First up was the reboot of 'The Snow Goose', which many thought benefited from the slightly rockier, more classic prog keyboards of Ton Scherpenzeel, standing in for Guy Le Blanc, who is battling serious illness. Ton's keyboards added a different colour again in the second half of Camel favourites, which were slightly tweaked from the Autumn tour - out went Airborn, Tell Me, Mystic Queen, Wait and Never Let Go (For Pete), with only Drafted coming in. So a shorter set than the last tour, but no-one felt short-changed. Andy's playing, as usual, was as wonderful and expressive as his facial gurnings, as ever more than ably supported by Colin, Denis and Jason - and the version of Lady Fantasy to close the night probably stands as my favourite ever. Comparing with last year's gig in Wolverhampton I felt that Ton Scherpenzeel's playing added a 'dreamier' quality to the soundscape which made the gigs quite different. Not any better or worse than Guy LeBlanc, just different.
The Town Hall has a big, high vaulted ceiling and I noticed there were several suspended sound 'squares/baffles' (in clear glass/plastic? see picture) and I felt that the reflections from these contributed to the sound being a little bit 'wooly' at times, at least from where I was sat. This was more prevalent in first set but the sound seemed to settle down more in the second set (at least to my ears). I also felt that the first set was perhaps a little sterile probably due to the concert style, all-seater setting and an audience that seemed quite reserved to begin with (just my personal opinion). Of course, I think this all made for a great recording and it was genuinely a really great gig even if Andy and Colin screwed up a couple of times (lyrics in Lady Fantasy being a good example).
