EPs featuring six demos from the` Director’s Cut’ re-release of the landmark 1973 QUADROPHENIA album produced, authorized and overseen by Pete Townshend. This individually numbered 10? EP will be the first of two Record Store Day exclusives. The Wood Brothers play a sort of Americana version of jazz, or country with an edge, or folk with some rhythmic bite, or maybe secular gospel that faces darkness with a wry and stubborn hopefulness. It's really hard to pin these guys down into a precise category. Chris Wood's tight, fluid, and always surprising basslines are a big part of why this group works, but so too are his brother Oliver Wood's songs, which are easygoing on the surface, but reveal sharply observed personal story lines that reach against odds toward ragged redemption. This live set features the duo with drummer Jano Rix and Clay Cook guesting on lap steel, and while these songs have already appeared on Wood Brothers releases, the live format shows just how sturdy and fluid this band actually is, and the songs seem to unfold and flow at the center of it all. "One More Day" has a gray-day feel, but the dogged hopefulness of having "one more day" makes this otherwise sad song into one of elegantly resigned joy. "Smoke Ring Halo" is a simply fascinating and charming song, framed perfectly by Chris Wood's bass and Rix's sparse, precise drumming. Oliver Wood's droll, offhand, and sometimes fragile singing style fits his songs perfectly, and when he sings "Don't let the angels take your smoke ring halo," it's obvious how good a songwriter he is. "Stumbled In," a song about literally stumbling into Heaven, is another gem, part country, part gospel, part honky tonk jazz, and the band pulls it all off with sparse sharpness. At times the Wood Brothers sound like a stripped-down alt-folk version of the Band, or maybe the perfect opening act for Tom Waits, and captured live, Chris Wood's stunning basslines and Oliver Wood's quietly brilliant songs take everything into some pretty interesting and refreshing territory. This is Vol. 1, so more live material is still on its way. Undoubtedly it will further reveal what a fine little band this is.

JERRY GARCIA , DAVID GRISMAN TONY RICE - THE PIZZA TAPES VOL 1-3
Chances are, the most devoted fans of these three musicians have heard these tunes before, thanks to the crafty pizza-delivery boy who filched the tapes from Garcia's kitchen soon after they were recorded in 1993. That said, the warm, intimate performances here are very much worth an official CD release. The sessions came about when Tony Rice was in Northern California to record the delightful duet-collection Tone Poems with David Grisman. Garcia stopped by to hang out and jam with his old buddy Grisman and with Rice, one of his guitar idols. The disc retains all of the joy and spontaneity you'd expect from such an informal setting--Grisman even elected to leave in the between-song banter, which mostly consists of genuine overflowing mutual praise. The music itself, primarily traditional folk songs, is quite engaging thanks to Garcia's affecting, soulful, pained vocals and to the picking of all three. The contrast in flat-picking-guitar styles makes for an interesting combination: while Rice is technically superb, marvelously quick, and of remarkably clarion tone, Garcia is much more emotional and visceral, feeling his way along. There are a handful of exploratory, off-the-cuff jams that add to the impulsive nature of the whole project. Had the threesome actually intended this to be released, it probably wouldn't have the appeal it does, for this is the product of friends and music lovers, not recording artists.
Back in February 1993, David Grisman invited Jerry Garcia to join himself and Tony Rice in the studio. The trio performed together over two days on February 4 and February 5. As the story has it, Garcia’s recording were stolen soon afterwards by a pizza delivery boy and eventually leaked out to the public via a series of bootlegs. In 2000 Grisman released portions of the sessions as The Pizza Tapes. Now Grisman is offering an “Extra Large” 170 minute version of The Pizza Tapes through Acoustic Oasis, Grisman’s new download-based label.
