DEEP PURPLE - Getting Tighter In Miami :: Jai Alai Sports Auditorium, Miami, FL – February 8th, 1976
Deep Purple – Getting Tighter In Miami (Godfather Records GR 620621)
Getting Tighter In Miami (Godfather Records GR 620/621)
Jai Alai Sports Auditorium, Miami, FL – February 8th, 1976
Disc 1 (61:10) Burn, Lady Luck, Gettin’ Tighter / You Gotta Dance To The Rock’n’Roll, Love Child, Smoke On The Water / Georgia On My Mind, Jon Lord Solo / Lazy / Ian Paice Solo, Homeward Strut
Disc 2 (43:32) This Time Around, Ode To G, Tommy Bolin Solo, Dealer, Stormbringer, I’m Going Down, Highway Star
The latest Deep Purple Godfather release is a fine document of a Mark IV era recording. The source tape is a very good sounding mono audience recording with very little disturbance around the recorder. Being mono it suffers from lack of highs and lows but is an easy listen and the performance is excellent with all instruments being clear enough to be heard and sounds good at louder volumes.
The tour itself was plagued by inconsistent performances mainly from new guitarist Tommy Bolin and bassist / singer Glenn Hughes, but after a couple of repeated listenings it can be determined that this was an “on” night. The band stuck with a fairly consistent set list, the only thing changed was the new tracks from the Come Taste The Band album most all of which were played live at one time or another.
The band hits the stage and tunes / jams into the set opening song Burn, Tommy plays a nice but not killer solo and the harmonies of Coverdale / Hughes sound tight. The song about a lady who sell herself is next, Lady Luck was a song from Bolin’s past repertoire and used to be played by Energy with slightly different arraignments and lyrics the song.
The next song is one that really gets the blood pumping, the Glenn Hughes led Getting Tighter. Bolin’s playing is superb, the songs has a funky edge and his solos are spot on and the song has the nice slow “I know that you want me” interlude that has some nice echo plex in the back ground.
Jon Lord gets to play some synthesizer during Love Child, again the playing is tight and the song has a heavy feel to it, Ian Paice’s drumming is great on this night and he is having some great interaction with the rhythm section while Lord plays a solo. The first of the older material is next, Smoke on the Water is not bad, Bolin play is pretty straight but without the passion that he used for the CTTB material. Jon Lord plays a great solo that leads directly to the Georgia on my Mind interlude, cannot say it is a favorite and upon its conclusion the band hammers the ending of Smoke.
The audience around the recording shouts their approval. Another old track is next complete with a Jon Lord organ intro, almost sounding church like in nature it soon evolves into familiar themes played by Lord. His playing eventually leads into Lazy, if there is one song you would really want to hear Bolin rip into this is the one. He pretty much takes a back seat and lets Lord solo while he plays some rhythm structure, it would have been great to hear him “battle” back and forth with Lord. TB does play a great solo and just as you get to the point where he would just kill you the band stops and Ian Paice takes over for his solo spot that leads directly into the solo Bolin tune from Teaser, Homeward Strut.
Kind of a cousin to Getting Tighter without vocals, the rest of Purple play well, especially Jon Lord who again plays a nice synth solo. The second disc kicks off with the Lord / Hughes solo spot dedicated to Stevie Wonder, This Time Around starts off almost sounding dream like before its companion comes in dramatically in this recording. Bolin’s playing is superb, very fluent but not over playing the song.
The song concludes with some trippy echoplex that’s leads into Bolin’s solo spot. The audience cheers at the stops, the solo itself is a pretty low key affair, instead on ripping he just noodles around for some time before getting into some effects that sound like a cross between the open of Rush’s Xanadu and the middle section of By Tor and the Snow Dog.
The whole thing comes to close and the band leads into Dealer, the last of the Come taste The Band songs it is impressive live and a personal favorite. Again Bolin shines on the track and plays a fiery solo, it is a joy to have a good sounding version of the song live. The main ends with a heavy Stormbringer complete with a snippet of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition thrown in for good measure. The encores are I’m Going Down that has the whole band interacting with each other to great effect and finally Highway Star finishes off the audience (and listener) is fine fashion.
Over all a well played concert with some significance as this is the venue where Tommy Bolin would play his last show just 10 months later as an opening act for Jeff Beck before he ultimately succumbed to a drug overdose. The packaging is typical Godfathers, beautiful color photographs and relevant liner notes, when I saw this title first announced I was very excited. Mark IV releases are pretty few and far between and clearly Godfather should be congratulated for taking chances with their releases. Highly recommended. http://fp.io/c85674b6/

DEEP PURPLE - German Explosion - Stadthalle Offenbach West Germany - April 10, 1971
Deep Purple – German Explosion
German Explosion (The Godfatherecords G.R.556/557)
Stadthalle Offenbach West Germany April 10, 1971
Disc 1 (55:20) Stage Announcements, Intro-Jodler, Speed King, Strange Kind Of Woman, Child In Time, Paint It Black, Into The Fire
Disc 2 (72:55) Mandrake Root, Black Night, Lucille, Wring That Neck
The tape used for German Explosion has been previouslyly released as Live In Germany Darker Than Blue 068/069/070 together with the Than Blue 068/069/070, a three disc set that also contains the Offenbach, Germany 27th November 1970 show. The recording is a very good audience recording, the drums are pretty much buried but the other instruments are pretty well defined.
There is a small amount of hiss present as one would expect from an audience recording of this age, to this reviewers ears does not distract. The performance itself is excellent, Deep Purple at this stage were a power house of a live band. Their stage act was largely build upon improvisation and the interaction between the three core members of Blackmore, Lord, and Piace is what drives it.
The recording starts with some brief stunning and a announcement from Gillan about a stolen guitar and the band starts the Jodler music and Ian does his thing. A curiosity that the band has been doing during this period as a way for the band to warmly greet their audience and gives a chance for Blackmore to play music he obviously has an interest in, one that will come to fruition after his time in Purple was done in the mid 90’s.
The band gets down to business with the opening of Speed King, a song loosely adapted from their cover version of Lucille. The playing is aggressive and goes for the jugular with Blackmore out in front. The next song is Strange Kind Of Woman, recently released as a single and originally entitled prostitute it has already earned a place early in the set and features the trading of licks from Blackmore and Gillan.
The center piece of the show is obviously Child In Time, not only for its heavily dramatic feel but is easily lent to improvisation and this version is the example. clocking in at about 19 minutes the band lets loose, the solo parts after the main themes after vehicles for Blackmore and Lord to trade licks and musical themes back and forth while the rhythm section plays a version of almost jazz rock that builds the foundation. Great stuff indeed ! Ian Piace can finally be heard during his drum solo musically based around an instrumental version of the Rolling Stones song Paint It Black.
The recording starts to pick up his solo better after the recording device adjusts and the full barrage of his drumming can be enjoyed. A great version of Into The Fire follows and closes disc one, similar to the recorded version and equally intense it is one of the few songs with no extended improvisation. The second disc starts with Ian talking about girls who don’t wear knickers or anything else and the band launches into Mandrake Root.
Other than the main theme the song has little in common with the track recorded on the bands first record. This one is all about the improvisation and interplay between Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore. As Lord takes the first section Blackmore and the others follow with a finger picking style rhythm at a fast tempo. Blackmore start his section slow and somber and brings the band to an almost complete stop and them picking up the pace and ending with a flurry of notes and feedback.
The sound does slightly deteriorate half way through and does not recover but is still listenable. The one two punch of Black night and Lucille end the show and afterwards the band thanks the crowd and leaves the stage to huge applause. A great version of Wring That Neck follows, the sound of the recording is different than the rest of the show, this sounds closer to the stage and is much more clear and as a fuller range of sound.
It is also on the Darker Than Blue release also and non the less is a good listen. After reading the excellent review of the Live In Germany title by wgpsec I can conclude that there nothing new gained from this release and if you already have that title there is no reason to invest in this one. If you do not own a version of this show this is an excellent way to pick up a version of a superb show.
The packaging is what we come to expect from Godfather, tri fold sleeve adorned with pictures from the era and good liner notes (although I had to question them when it is stated that the sound of this recording is comparably to the Aachen 1970 show, that is certainly not the case). Hopefully we can expect more Deep Purple from the folks at Godfathers, they continue to put out interesting and great releases. http://fp.io/f865m8f5/

DEEP PURPLE - Made in Japan [Deluxe Edition]
Deep Purple – Made in Japan [Deluxe Edition] (2014)
Made In JapanDeep Purple’s monstrous power as a live act was solidified more than four decades ago with the release of their first live album, Made in Japan. This May, a tidal wave of Made in Japan reissues are surging your way, from remasters to expansions to box sets on CD, vinyl and Blu-Ray.
In 1972, Deep Purple were flying higher than ever. The quintet – at the time, singer Ian Gillan, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice – had just released their sixth album in five years (and third with the Mk II lineup), Machine Head. It was their first chart-topper in their native England, and also went Top 10 in the States. By this time, the band had quite a sterling reputation as a live act, but were reluctant to attempt a live album for fear they could not produce the exact kind of polished set they could in studio.
Ultimately, upon discovering a burgeoning bootleg market around their tours, they relented, recording three consecutive nights in Osaka and Tokyo, Japan (where the band were particularly adored). Focusing solely on putting on a great show and less on how the final product would sound (to this day, members of the band have reportedly never heard the album), Deep Purple’s gamble paid off handsomely. A single backed with both studio and live versions of the instant classic (and arguable progenitor of heavy metal) “Smoke on the Water” was a U.S. Top 5 hit. The album went Top 10 in America and Top 20 in England, eventually earning a platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America for over a million units shipped.

DEEP PURPLE – Copenhagen 1972
Deep Purple – Copenhagen 1972 (2013)
Having already been released over the years as Machine Head Live in Japan and Scandinavian Nights in Europe, this live set from Deep Purple finally gets a more official release as part of the Official Deep Purple (Overseas) Live Series.
Featuring Deep Purple performing songs off their (as of the recording unreleased) benchmark album Machine Head in 1972, this live set finds the lege- ndary band performing in a world where “Smoke on the Water” had yet to become one of the most instantly recognizable riffs in rock history. Besides the show from Copenhagen recorded on March 1, 1972, the release includes three bonus tracks recorded live in New York on May 29, 1973 and an interview recorded during the 1971 Australia tour.
