REO SPEEDWAGON - REO SPEEDWAGON - 1971

R E O Speedwagon -

Just the good ol' boys, back before the controversial (love him or loathe him) Kevin Cronin made REO top-heavy with ballads. Curly crooner Cronin did provide some smooth yin to fiery axe-kicker Gary Richrath's rough yang, so this platter drops some rather faceless barroom boogie. But unsung keyboardist Neal Doughty's chops are as sharp as ever, and REO would salvage the smoking "Sophisticated Lady" and the sleazy anthem "157 Riverside Avenue" for their never-ending live oeuvre. Most songs are good, hard bits with nary a trace of Hi Infidelity's infectious bubble rock. You know the amount of subtlety expected from a band that titles a tune "Prison Women" (later appearing on the premium Jailhouse Rock: Hits from the Big House collection). Like most old-timers, a return to these earthy roots would no doubt help REO out in their latter, uninspired years.Review by Whitney Z. Gomes(allmusic.com)

1. Gypsy Woman's Passion (5:08)
2. 157 Riverside Ave. (3:54)
3. Anti Estabishment Man (5:08)
4. Lay Me Down (3:46)
5. Sophiscated Lady (3:55)
6. Five Men Were Killed Today (2:55)

Frank Zappa show from 1973!
Or should I say:On the peak of his career?
I mean,he had made the "Freak Out" album in 1966 and he had made "Chunga´s Revenge(1970)" and he had made the "Waka Jawaka"album in 1972 already.
And 1973 now is the year of "Cosmic Debris","Fifty Fifty" or "Montana".Frank Zappa is rocking the world...
You can hear the fun they had when they played these shows in June of 1973!They sound like they would play "Fifty Fifty","Montana" or "Cosmic Debris"... like they played them for the first time...and never again!

If you like Frank Zappa shows (there is the June,25th,1973 show on the Wagon down below, too),
and if you still don`t have them,I can only recommend these shows! And I promise: You will love this show, too!
Ah,I forgot to tell you something bad...There are some very few unfortunate cuts...

    9. David Bowie Soundcheck

Track 9 is introduced by Zappa as the "David Bowie Soundcheck". It seems to be George Duke's funky intro to "Dupree's Paradise", and not unlike "The Booger Man". On Sono di Passagio, it is identified as "Is There a Life After Uncle Meat?" ("Uncle Meat" itself, ironically, is not listed there). The Our Man in Italy vinyl, in 1983, had deluxe colour covers and/or green & white covers and was pressed on 300 numbered copies on blue vinyl. Sono di Passagio was made in 200 un-numbered copies. The cover has the 20th Century Fox logo, with "Fox" replaced with "Frog", and a black & white picture of Zappa with a guitar. Both black and white vinyl has been mentioned.

(The "Our Man in Italy" was inspired by Our Man in Nirvana, which is a bootleg and an unreleased 1960s album, and also a play on Graham Greene's book title Our Man in Havana.)
