The original Will the Circle Be Unbroken is undoubtedly a landmark country-music recording. A peace offering between rock-reared longhairs and rock-ribbed Nashville patriarchs (and one matriarch, Mother Maybelle Carter), it exposed generations of upstart pickers and singers to old-time country music and its impact is felt to this day. The organizers of the 1971 sessions that led to the initial three-LP set, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, have produced two sequels, the first in 1989 and the most recent in 2002. This six-disc collection (including an all-star concert DVD) pulls together all three Circle sessions and, naturally, captures dozens of essential performances, plus a fair number of inessentials. Anyone with an interest in country music will want the original. Its mission is clear, the performances are inspired, and its significance is undeniable. The second Circle strays far afield from the original concept, bringing in the rather lightweight likes of John Denver and Michael Martin Murphy to mix with volume one holdovers Jimmy Martin and Earl Scruggs. The final volume is also more diffuse than one would like, though eminent guest stars such as Del McCoury, June Carter Cash, and Johnny Cash help it capture the spirit of the original more frequently than does its immediate predecessor. In 1972, long before O Brother, Where Art Thou? allowed hipsters and intermittent record buyers through the great oak doors of traditional country music, California's Nitty Gritty Dirt Band gathered legends and soon to become legends of country music into a Nashville studio and made the sprawling Will the Circle Be Unbroken. The success of this experiment led to a second volume in 1989 and a third in 2002. Trilogy compiles all three worthwhile volumes into a box set that includes the extra tracks found on the recently reissued versions. The original Bertha Remaster of this show was from a (Master Reel>>REEL) source and was really bad.  It should never have been released.  I cannot believe I gave it an A+ sound rating.   This version is far superior to the original and deserves the A rating.

I considered using the Serafin >illegal bootleg> source for this Bertha redo, but chose not to because noise reduction was used, and because it was badly over-compressed. The master reel source I used may have a bit more tape hiss, but I believe it to be the best sounding source, with respect to the music signal.

15 dropouts and other anomolies were repaired throughout.

While the Grateful Dead will always be knows as a 1960s hippie, psychedelic band, the truth is that musically they reached their peak in the 1970s. Ironically, that’s also the decade where they took about 18 months off from touring and recording between their “farewell “ shows at Winterland in October 1974 and their return to live performances in June 1976. Many think that their 1977 Spring tour, about a year after their return from their hiatus marked the band’s finest moment. Others say that the year and half prior to their retirement, from Spring 1973 to Fall 1974, was the band’s highpoint. We’ll deal with the 1977 tour in great depth in May. Today, we’ll feature a soundboard from March 26, 1973, 4 decades ago today, from Baltimore. The Dead started 1973 with 2 new band members, keyboardist Keith Godchaux and wife, vocalist Donna Jean. Keith gave the band a more jazz influenced sound, which led to a whole host of new improvisational ventures in their live shows, especially on new tunes such as Eyes Of The World and Weather Report Suite. Download this one to hear the Dead at the start of their remarkable 1973-1974 run, then check this site for a host of other incredible shows from that period.

Grateful Dead - 1971-12-05 - Felt Forum, NY (FM)

In early December 1971, the Grateful Dead took up residence for 4 nights at the Felt Forum in New York City.  The Felt Forum was a small theater, which seated between 3000 and 5000 people, located underneath the main arena at Madison Square Garden, The Forum was most often used for boxing matches, though numerous rock bands also played the venue, including The Doors, Frank Zappa, Lou Reed and Santana.  When Madison Square Garden was remodeled in 1990, the Felt Forum became the Paramount, and later was known as The Theater at MSG. Scott Muni, legendary WNEW-FM DJ and long time friend of the Grateful Dead, arranged to have the station broadcast night 2 of the Dead’s Felt Forum run, on December 5, 1971, 41 years ago today. Muni would be live at the Theater, and coordinated with Denis Elsas in the studio to fill in gaps before the show started and during the set break. For more details, go here to see the letter from Muni to the WNEW staff regarding the broadcast. This concert may have been the very first Grateful Dead bootleg I ever owned, lovingly preserved for years on a Maxell tape cassette. Now thanks to the magic of digital technology and the internet, we can all throw away the tapes and download a copy of that FM broadcast with the click of the link above - actually, it's 2 copies as I couldn't decide which of the 2 versions of the show sounded better, so I included both in the download file! By the way, it would 7 years and 1 month before the Dead again played at Madison Square Garden, when they played the main arena on January 7, 1979, first of 52 shows at that venue!
