On August 19 Alligator Records will release the latest album from celebrated blues musician Elvin Bishop. "Can’t Even Do Wrong Right" (which is now available for pre-order) finds Bishop joined by his steady touring band along with special guests Charlie Musselwhite and Mickey Thomas. Bishop shares his enthusiasm for this roster with Relix--"Wow, it was kinda lucky how everything happened for this project. The tunes fell out of the sky and the people I wanted turned out to be willing and available--Mickey and Charlie and the band--wow--and Steve Savage put a helluva sound together for us."

Elvin Bishop has been singing and recording his rollicking brand of electrified Blues for almost 40 years. Bishop’s history-making tenure as a founding member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the 1960s, his chart-topping hits in the 1970s, and his emergence on Alligator Records in the late 80s and into the 90s place him at the forefront of electric Blues guitarists.
All 16 tracks on this She Put Me in the Mood compilation were culled from Bishop’s Alligator Records releases, which at the time of their original release received consistent critical acclaim as well as enjoying commercial success. He signed with the Alligator label in 1988 and same year released Big Fun, and Don’t Let the Bossman Get You Down in 1991. He also participated in Alligator’s 1992 20th Anniversary cross-country tour; three years later released an album entitled Ace in the Hole. The Skin I’m In followed in 1998, and 2000's That’s My Partner saw him teaming up with Smokey Smothers, the same musician who had originally taught him guitar.

20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Elvin Bishop

After starting out with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the mid-'60s, Elvin Bishop recorded solo for the short-lived Fillmore label (later controlled by Sony) in the late '60s and early '70s, and he made several albums for the independent Alligator Records in the '80s and '90s. But he gained his greatest commercial recognition on Capricorn Records (the early catalog of which is now controlled by Universal) in the mid- to late '70s, and it is this portion of his career that is represented on this midline-priced best-of, which has been assigned to Universal's Mercury imprint. Bishop modified his basic blues-rock style for each of his affiliations: With Butterfield he played Chicago blues, on Fillmore he took on something of the San Francisco acid rock style, and on Capricorn he absorbed some of the Southern rock of labelmates like the Allman Brothers Band. Four of his five Hot 100 chart entries are found here (the missing one is the least successful, "Spend Some Time"), among them "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," the Top Five hit that has always been an anomaly for him, not only because Mickey Thomas is featured on lead vocals, but also because, even though Bishop wrote it, it sounds much more pop-oriented than one expects from him. More consistent with his style is the minor chart entry "Travelin' Shoes," which boasts a lot of Allmans-like slide guitar work, especially in the seven-minute-plus workout heard here (the single was a three-minute edit), and some politically incorrect lyrics about beating a woman with a baseball bat that probably didn't sound as objectionable back in 1974. But then, the country blues never boasted the most enlightened lyrics, and Bishop also cheerfully admits to "Stealin' Watermelons." No need to waste time making a mixtape for your next blues bash--just throw on this disc and let Elvin Bishop be your host for a night of rollicking fun. Bishop has traditionally been known for bouncy shows that incorporate both the deep blues he cut as an original member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and the country-styled soul he gravitated to as one of the Capricorn label's popular Southern rock acts in the '70s. You can practically see his goofy grin and wild eyes as he knocks back an hour's worth of highlights from a 2006 show. Accompanied by a sympathetic eight-piece band that includes three background vocalists and a trombonist who also plays rubboard, this is a nonstop party that doesn't even slow down for the topical, politically based ruminations of "What the Hell Is Going On," one of only two tracks reprised from his appropriately titled 2005 comeback Gettin' My Groove Back. The slow blues of "Belly Rubbin'" and the opening instrumental "Stomp" spotlight Bishop's impressive guitar chops, but this is truly a group effort. He turns lead vocals over to other band members for three tracks, and if he’s not enjoying himself as much as the audience, he ought to be nominated for an Oscar instead of a Grammy. Bishop cherry-picks "Stealin' Watermelons" from his early years, but generally sticks to fresh tunes and unusual covers such as Roy Milton's humorous "Keep a Dollar in Your Pocket" and Junior Parker's frisky "I Feel Alright Again." Let the booty bumpin' begin!
