SAM COOKE - THE BEST OF

Sam Cooke - The Best Of Sam Cooke (2011)

The Best of Sam Cooke, NOT2CD386, This new compilation comprises CD1 a selection of 26 songs including all the hits associated with Sam Cooke. The period covered is 1957 (5); 1958 (4); 1959 (8) & 1960 (9) tracks with a total running time of approx 66 minutes. The recordings are from the Keen Records and RCA label. CD2 has for the first time on CD the RCA albums "Swing Low" with orchestra under Sammy Lowe and has 3 of Sam Cooke's compositions included plus his debut album "Cooke's Tour" with orchestra under Glenn Osser and both albums date from 1960, recorded in New York City and were originally released as LPM 2293 & LPM2221. The running time for this CD is approx 72 minutes. Liner notes by Michael Heatley and the inner liner displays the covers of the 2 RCA albums. "Swing Low" is quite a contrast to the more standards orientated "Cooke's Tour" and yet the common thread is the ability of Sam Cooke to give his interpretation of the song (gospel, R&B, soul & middle of the road). Overall sound quality very good and well presented by Not Now and another excellent addition to their catalogue. This release should interest both collectors and those who want a rounded collection of Sam Cooke titles.

SKIP SPENCE - OAR [1969]

Skip Spence - OAR [1969]

Alexander Lee "Skip" Spence (April 18, 1946 – April 16, 1999) was a Canadian-born musician and singer-songwriter. He was co-founder of Moby Grape, and played guitar with them until 1969. He released one solo album, 1969's Oar, and then largely withdrew from the music industry. He had started his career as a guitarist in an early line-up of Quicksilver Messenger Service, and was the drummer on Jefferson Airplane's debut album, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off. He has been described on the Allmusic website as "one of psychedelic rock's brightest lights"; however, his career was plagued by drug addictions coupled with mental health problems, and he has been described by a biographer as a man who "neither died young nor had a chance to find his way out."

REVIEW
by William Ruhlmann
On its third studio album, Lotus continues to come off as a mixture of disparate influences. The instrumental quintet (there are some occasional desultory vocals, mostly contributed by guests) often recalls the sound of Neil Young & Crazy Horse (particularly on the opening track, "Behind Midwest Storefronts," and on "Invincibility of Youth"), as a stinging guitar, presumably the one played by Mike Rempel, leads the way through meandering melodies and the rhythm section lurches along behind. But then there are the electronic influences, apparent on such tracks as "Age of Inexperience," which recalls Pere Ubu and Devo, and "Bellwether," which reveals that somebody's been listening to Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock." Classic grunge rock, angular new wave, and electronic dance-rock are not styles many people would try to mix, nor are they ones many would be likely to enjoy in the same set, but Lotus manages to make all of it work, at least for the length of the disc.

BIOGRAPHY
by William Ruhlmann
Combining elements of jam bands and electronic dance rock, Lotus was formed by brothers Jesse Miller (bass/sampler) and Luke Miller (guitar/keyboards), Steve Clemens (drums), Chuck Morris (percussion), and Mike Rempel (guitar) while they were attending Goshen College in Indiana in 1999. They recorded their debut album, Vibes, in concert in the fall of 2001 and self-released it in 2002. A second live album, Germination, was released on Harmonized Records on May 13, 2003. Nomad, the group's first studio recording, followed on September 21, 2004. The Strength of Weak Ties, another studio album, appeared on April 4, 2006. Lotus was signed to the SCI Fidelity label for its third live album, a double disc called Escaping Sargasso Sea, released May 29, 2007. Five months later, Copy/Paste/Repeat: Lotus Remixed was issued on November 6, 2007. Lotus' third studio album, Hammerstrike, came out on October 14, 2008.

JORMA KAUKONEN - QUAH

Quah -- Jorma Kaukonen's (guitar/vocal) solo debut effort -- was recorded and issued shortly after the dissolution of Jefferson Airplane in 1974. In contrast to the sonic indulgences of Grace Slick's Manhole or Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship's Blows Against the Empire, Kaukonen retreated back to his folk-blues roots along with vocalist Tom Hobson -- who contributes to "Blue Prelude" and "Sweet Hawaiian Sunshine" -- to create this intricate acoustic masterwork. From the highly original artwork -- courtesy of Kaukonen's then-wife Margareta -- to the stark and beautiful melodies within the grooves, Quah is unlike any other recording from the era. Much of the album's vibe is strikingly similar to the final contributions that Kaukonen made to Jefferson Airplane. The most obvious and direct correlation being "Third Week at the Chelsea," which maintains much of the same intimacy as the tracks "Genesis," "Flying Clouds," and "Song for the North Star." Likewise, his admiration for folk, blues, and gospel -- which had first surfaced on the self-titled Hot Tuna debut release -- informs the content of this disc on his cover of Rev. Gary Davis' "I Am the Light of This World" as well as the haunting traditional blues "Another Man Done Gone"and Blind Boy Blake's understatedly ribald "Police Dog Blues." Tom Hobson's inimitable vocal delivery stands apart from Kaukonen's in a somewhat theatrical manner. His take on the noir torch song "Blue Prelude" could not be more dissimilar to the practically giddy "Sweet Hawaiian Sunshine." Yet both are equally functional in the context of the rest of the album. In 1987 Relix magazine issued a very limited pressing of Quah on CD. Tragically, it was not re-pressed and remains near the top of want lists from enthusiasts eager to retire worn vinyl copies. This disc is a timeless and highly underrated statement from one of the world's premier guitarists. It is worthy -- if not quietly demanding -- of repeated listening.[allmusic]                                                 http://www.fileserve.com/file/kNdtdTU

STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN & Double Trouble – The Sky Is Crying

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble – The Sky Is Crying (1991, MFSL 2011)

Comprised of ten previously unreleased studio performances from Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble cut between late 1984 and early 1989, The Sky Is Crying serves as the legendary guitarists unofficial fifth album as well as an homage to extraordinary musicians exceptional abilities as a musician, songwriter, and interpreter. It also contains the tremendously moving Life By the Drop, the first-ever recorded take of Vaughan playing acoustic guitar. Few, if any, posthumous collections are more complete, satisfying, and revealing as this 1990 set. With the set never before remastered in any form, Mobile Fidelity has taken the honors seriously, remastering from the original master tapes and presenting these life-affirming songs in jaw-dropping fidelity…
…on hybrid SACD. At times, it feels as if you are sitting in the studio control room with the band just a few feet away, as nearly every selection here was recorded live with minimal overdubs. The degree of presence, immediacy, and detail is on par with the best-sounding blues albums on LP or CD in existence. When Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash in August 1990, his brother, Jimmie, set to work on finding finished material that his younger sibling left in the vaults. To his surprise, there weren’t many completed leftovers save for the tracks on this set, which lent to the opinion that, in some way, Vaughan intended The Sky Is Crying to be an actual record. Nearly every song here had long found its way into the groups live sets, including the supremely soulful title track, bathed in Reese Wynans warm organ accompaniment. It would be a standout on most albums, but this effort is filled with such nonpareil matter. Consider Boot Hill, a rarity in that Vaughan plays the slide guitar the very first time he’s captured on record in this style. The song was left off of In Step due to its darker content. Or the insightful cover of Jimi Hendrix’s Little Wing, which seamlessly moves from tender to tough and back again; listen and you will hear Vaughan’s amp humming in the background. Vaughan’s formative influences get channeled on a slow-burn version of Howlin’ Wolf’s May I Have a Talk With You, during which the Texan incorporates the lyrics of several blues standards into the narrative for extra oomph. No matter what Vaughan is playing, his expressive techniques, dynamic contrasts, and jazzy tonalities rise to the surface. This is due to Mobile Fidelity’s retrieval of previously hidden information and meticulous engineering that gives the music that sought-after breath of life. Everything from Vaughan’s syncopated rhythms to his hot-wired guitar licks sounds apiece, vibrant, and exactly as it should. Want to experience music played with ultimate conviction and soul-shaking integrity? Don’t wait another second to dive into The Sky Is Crying.
