Of the Eric Clapton Japan 2009 shows that are currently available for sharing, this is probably the only date that originates from a soundboard. This show was broadcast on Japanese satellite TV and a word of thanks to Japrainbow for extracting the tracks and sharing them on the internet. As one happy fan noted: “This will be together with the two DVDs an absolute highlight in my Clapton collection.” [The show was also shared as two DVDs on the internet.]
The setlist for this night is almost the same as that of the first night in Tokyo (February 15) with the exception of Everything’s Gonna Be Alright, which replaces Before You Accuse Me. While the feisty I Shot The Sheriff continues to be a crowd favourite, fans will certainly enjoy Clapton’s buoyant playing on Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad. What seems to be missing is Carlos Santana, who probably would have egged Clapton on and rocket the track to the stratosphere. While the audience recording of the earlier show was already very good, fans will no doubt enjoy a show that is broadcast quality.
The following was posted at the Clapton fansite, whereseric.com: “Adult contemporary radio favorite Wonderful Tonight is still in the set list to the chagrin of the Japanese fans. However, the excellent versions of I Shot The Sheriff and Little Queen Of Spades more than made up for it according to early reports! Another fan has checked in and said that their personal highlights also included EC’s solo acoustic number, Driftin’, Travelin’ Alone, Isn’t It A Pity, Motherless Child and the ending songs of Layla and Cocaine. They also reported that EC’s solos were excellent throughout the show.
“Since EC has been back at the Budokan, Layla has been plugged back in (the “unplugged” acoustic version was played at the two concerts with Jeff Beck last weekend). There were slight modifications to this evening’s set list - Isn’t It A Pity is back and Everything’s Gonna Be Alright made its first appearance since night one of the tour in Osaka.”
