LORD SUTCH AND HEAVY FRIENDS

2 on 1 remastered release from one of the first genuine rock and roll longhairs with guests Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Jeff Beck, Keith Moon, Victor Brox, Brian Keith & Ritchie Blackmore. Tracks 1-12 taken from the album Lord Sutch & Heavy Friends with tracks 13-20 taken from the album Hands Of Jack The Ripper. Includes a five minute medley, 'Tutti Frutti Medley' (Long Tall Sally, Jenny Jenny, Keep a-Knockin', Jenny Jenny, Tutti Frutti).
David "Screaming Lord" Sutch was a British rocker of the early 1960s who turned Screamin' Jay Hawkins' horror rockabilly into a frantic, decadent and silly show for teenagers. Sutch founded the Savages in 1961 (with members such as Ritchie Blackmore, the future Deep Purple guitarist). My Big Black Coffin (1961), also known as Till The Following Night, Jack the Ripper (1963), Monster In Black Tight (1963), Dracula's Daughter (1964) and She's Fallen In Love With A Monster Man (1964) created a cult following in the era of teen idols and the Beatles. Sutch was the opposite of the mainstream and enjoyed provoking the bourgeoisie.
Alas, that meant that his show was never recorded on album. His first album came out much later, Lord Sutch And Heavy Friends (1970). Despite the numerous guests (Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Nicky Hopkins), the album does not do Sutch justice. Blackmore, Keith Moon and Noel Redding played on Hands Of Jack The Ripper (1972), but, again, the music was conventional hard-rock with lots of histrionics. Sutch recorded two more albums, Alive And Well (Babylon, 1982) and Rock and Horror (Ace, 1982), having been rediscovered by the punk generation.

Check out Warren’s soulful delivery of The Band’s classic "The Weight," and Derek’s tasty slide licks that recall Duane’s work on the Aretha Franklin version. Another highlight is "Elizabeth Reed," performed a la Fillmore East, with no extended drum solo. Tight, concise and powerful!

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - Tweeter Center, Camden, New Jersey - 8/18/2006
THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND-
Tweeter Center,
Camden, New Jersey
8/18/2006
For the first time in history, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Tom Petty and the Allman Brothers Band played together at this show. Petty adds vocals to the Dylan classic "Highway 61 Revisited," and Heartbreakers Mike Campbell, Steve Ferrone and Benmont Tench join in the jamming. This performance is a classic groove from start to finish! An explosive "Jessica" is another high point in a show filled with great songs, including the only "Layla" of the entire summer. Derek’s liquid slide tones end the Petty tour on the highest possible note.
