COLOSSEUM - LIVE 05
One of the most influential of the early British progressive rock bands, Colosseum fused an adventurous approach to rock with strong jazz and blues influences and classical keyboard accents; they earned a loyal and lasting following though they never scored a major breakthrough hit. Colosseum was founded in 1968 by saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith, bassist Tony Reeves, and drummer Jon Hiseman; the three had previously worked with John Mayall, playing on his album Bare Wires, and Heckstall-Smith and Hiseman were formerly members of the Graham Bond Organisation. The first lineup was completed with the addition of Dave Greenslade on keyboards, Jim Roche on guitar and vocalist James Litherland, who took over on guitar when Roche soon departed. After making their live debut in Newcastle, Colosseum earned a valuable ally in legendary BBC disc jockey John Peel, who featured the band on his Top Gear radio show. Fontana Records signed the band, and their first album, Those Who Are About to Die Salute You, was released in 1969; it fared well in the charts, and the lead-off track, "Walking in the Park," was issued as a single, though it proved to be the only 7" from the group. Colosseum's second album, Valentyne Suite, appeared later the same year; it was the debut release from Vertigo Records, the influential progressive and hard rock label. (Vertigo and Fontana were both affiliated with the Dutch recording firm Philips.) 1970's Daughter of Time featured a new lineup of the band; James Litherland left to form the band Mogul Thrash and Tony Reeves moved into production full-time, and Colosseum added guitarist Dave Clempson, bassist Mark Clarke, and lead vocalist Chris Farlowe. Another Colosseum album, The Grass Is Greener, appeared in 1970, but it was in fact a revised version of Valentyne Suite, released only in the United States and featuring four of the original selections from the LP and four new songs. In 1971, Colosseum jumped ship from Vertigo to the newly formed Bronze Records and recorded a handful of shows at Manchester University and the Big Apple club in Brighton; the band broke up before they could complete a studio album for their new label, and 1971's Colosseum Live would prove to be the last release from the group's first era. In 1975, Jon Hiseman launched Colosseum II, a more jazz-oriented combo which also featured Gary Moore on guitar and Don Airey on keyboards; the new group released three albums before parting ways in 1978. In 1994, the Daughter of Time lineup of Colosseum reunited for a concert tour, and a live album was drawn from the concerts. The band issued a new studio album in 1997, Breads & Circuses, and Colosseum has reconvened for periodic recordings and live shows ever since. Saxophonist Barbara Thompson (who is married to Jon Hiseman) frequently appeared with the reunited version of Colosseum, and became an official member of the group following the death of Dick Heckstall-Smith in 2004.

COLOSSEUM - THE GRASS IS GREENER [RELEASED ONLY IN THE US.]
The second album from this British jazz-rock quintet rocks harder than their first outing. Their take on Jack Bruce's "Rope Ladder to the Moon" is especially strong, and "Jumping off the Sun" has a similar feel. "Bolero" has been done to death, but guitarist Dave Clempson (who later replaced Peter Frampton in Humble Pie) uses it to launch a showcase of guitar fireworks. In fact, Clempson's blazing guitar licks shine throughout. Dick Heckstall-Smith once again impresses on his arsenal of saxophones and woodwinds, and the seven-and-a-half minute title cut which he co-wrote with drummer Jon Hiseman is a highlight of this disc.
Digitally remastered edition of this 1970 album from one of the pivotal Progressive bands that emerged in the second part of the '60s. One of the most influential of the early British Prog Rock bands, Colosseum fused an adventurous approach to Rock with strong Jazz and Blues influences and classical keyboard accents. In contrast to other albums by Colosseum, The Grass Is Greener was released only in the United States. It includes a few songs that were on the earlier release, Valentyne Suite, as well as several cuts only released on this album. Talking Elephant. - cduniverse.com

COLOSSEUM II - "War Dance" (1978)
Colosseum II - "War Dance" (1978) @320
Studio Album, released in 1977
This supergroup must be one of the best kept secrets of Prog/Jazz Rock.Featuring the sticksman extraordinaire Hiseman(Colosseum,Tempest) on drums and percussion,Guitar God Gary Moore(Thin Lizzy,Midnight Blues Band) on guitar and Keyboard Wizard Don Airey (Rainbow,Whitesnake,Black Sabbath,Jethro Tull etc) plus John Mole on bass guitar, this band can really play.
The album is virtually all instrumental apart from the dreadful "Castles" (hence the 3 star rating and not 4).An exciting feature of Colosseum II is the duelling between the keyboards and guitar which can be seen to best effect on "Fighting Talk" where Airey knocks out some really terrific Minimoog leads and Moore growls back on his Gibson, and on "Inquisition" which features stunning guitar flights on electric and flamenco answering Airey's spacey keyboards.
Other standouts include "Star Maiden/Mysterioso/Quasar" which features some nice bass by John Mole before zipping off into more guitar and keyboard mayhem, the funky "Major Keys" and the dazzling title track:"War Dance".
Hardcore lovers of Fusion may find this album too rocky, but I love this album which but for "Castles" and the fact that it is more rock than Prog would be a 4 star nominee by me. Definitely a 3 1/2 star effort though.

COLOSSEUM - DAUGHTER OF TIME - 1970
Colosseum - Daughter of Time (1970) (@256)
(Review from progarchives.com)
Colosseum were one of the earliest progressive bands, but also in many ways were pioneers of the emerging 'jazz rock/fusion' style. Although hardly the first band to attempt such a fusion, Colosseum were one of the most popular acts at the time, and tended to make jazz accessible to the rock masses as their compositions were often tighter than many working within the jazz rock realm at this point.
This album saw Chris Farlowe, veteran blues singer, join the band. Whilst on the surface this doesn't seem to be a natural fusion, in fact Farlowe was doubtless already familiar with the members as he'd played in the same R & B circuit of the 60s; indeed Dave Greenslade had been in Farlowe's band for a time. Much respected guitarist Clem Clempson of Bakerloo also replaced the vocalist/guitarist James Litherland, and Mark Clarke replaced Tony Reeves. The resulting album, 'Daughter Of Time', saw a heavier accent on rock than previous efforts, but is still an utterly superb album; Farlowe's vocals are remarkably good here, and he fitted in far better with Colosseum than he did in Atomic Rooster.
'Three Score and Ten, Amen' is one of the most dramatic openers to any prog album. It's introduced by some staggeringly declarative vocal choirs, crunching guitars and powerful percussion, before Farlowe's uptempo vocals and Clarke's bass add a touch of funk to proceedings. Farlowe then gets more melodramatic, bellowing out the chorus, that introduces a funk rock section with powerful guitar work and a more pensive narrated section, leading to a gloriously overblown climax with squealing vocals from Farlowe.
'Time Lament' is a more typical piece, beginning with an intricate jazz section with saxophone and percussion to the fore, plus some neat orchestrations. 'Take Me Back To Doomsday' has a Chicago like vibe, thanks to a neat keyboard and bass heavy intro, with some wonderfully florid piano lines by Dave Greenslade, before the main melody kicks in. The riff is quite beefy and heavy, with powerful guitar riffing and bass playing to the fore, and some superb sax solos. 'Daughter Of Time' is a very dramatic piece, with superb keyboard work and saxophone to the fore, yet the drumming of Jon Hiseman and a furiously melodramatic vocal from Chris Farlowe steal the show on this superb track.
'Theme From An Imaginary Western' is a Jack Bruce/Pete Brown song that has been recorded many times, yet this is Colosseum's take on it. 'Bring Out Your Dead' is a superb instrumental, with some flawless organ work from Dave Greenslade that melanges wonderfully well with the percussion and sax work from Dick Heckstall Smith, making for a thrilling listen. 'Downhill and Shadows' is a mournful, bluesy lament that sounds akin to something from Bakerloo's one and only album, due to the powerhouse guitar work of Clem Clempson, yet a commanding vocal from Chris Farlowe means it scores higher.
This edition of the album includes a bonus live recording of 'The Time Machine' and as such sounds slightly out of place here. It's a drum solo, a fact that may turn many off, but Jon Hiseman was always one of the greatest drummers within the whole of the rock world, and is as such never boring and always thrilling to listen to.
'Daughter Of Time' is an album often considered to be the weaker of Colosseum's albums, but it's every bit as good as those were, if a bit different -- the band was brimming with great ideas and musical innovation.
