FLO & EDDIE - Flo & Eddie (1973)
Flo & Eddie - Flo & Eddie(1973)
While most people know Flo & Eddie as either the sweet pop voices behind the Turtles or the anarchic comedy guys in Zappa's band and their own bizarre road show, there is another side that is always there. On this self-titled album, their wistful, lyrical side dominates, though the other aspects of the duo are certainly apparent. Original tracks like "If We Only Had the Time" and "Just Another Town" convey a kind of sad nostalgia that feels much more heartfelt than the more upbeat tracks. That tendency is there on every Flo & Eddie record, but in this case the comic tracks seem exceptionally forced, as though they are the soundtrack to a stage show rather than pieces with their own merit. There are two exceptional songs on this album: the delirious Phil Spector cover "Best Part of Breaking Up" and the magnum opus "Marmendy Mill." The latter is a sweet paean to lost childhood that is undoubtedly the most honest and personal track this duo ever recorded. It also has the most ambitious scoring, with a full orchestra giving inspired backing to the final few minutes. What the members of their following who wanted more Zappa-style weirdness thought of this track is unrecorded, but it was certainly a personal best for a duo who wanted to be much more than a comedy act.Review by Richard Foss(allmusic.com)
