MOON TAXI - Acoustic on West 56th

Moon Taxi – Acoustic on West 56th EP (2013)
2014
Moon TaxiNashville band Moon Taxi has had another landmark year, appearing on bigger and bigger stages at events like Hangout Music Festival and following up 2012’s Cabaret with full-length Mountains Beaches Cities. Now, the band release a six-song EP Acoustic on West 56th, recorded in New York City earlier this Summer.
“We’ve always for the past couple years enjoyed playing acoustically, for videos or just for publications,” said guitarist Spencer Thomson, who mixed the new EP. “It’s something that we like doing, and something that our fans have started to like hearing. It’s a different side, since our live shows can be be so loud and energetic. We like to also show the songs in a more simplified, pure form.” Instead of planning out an elaborate recording process, the EP developed naturally.
“The opportunity kind of presented itself. We were in New York, sort of celebrating the release of our record and playing a show up there, a private intimate thing at our label’s office,” said Thomson. “We recorded it without any huge intentions.”
The EP consists of songs from Mountains Beaches Cities, all reworked and recorded live.
“The fun thing for me is just approaching it in a new way. We’re not working with a full drum set, we’re not working with effects pedals, said lead singer Trevor Terndrup. “We’re just working with six old strings and maybe a banjo or two.”

MOON TAXI – Mountains Beaches Cities

Moon Taxi – Mountains Beaches Cities (2013)

Moon TaxiNashville’s best kept secret is out. Since the release of Cabaret in early 2012, Moon Taxi have been on a steady climb away from the jam rock sound they built their reputation on, veering toward more radio-friendly, song-oriented material.
For a record named Mountains Beaches Cities, Moon Taxi’s latest effort is surprisingly inorganic, but don’t go calling them Kings of Leon just yet. The quintet returns with a solid follow up that showcases the band’s ability to experiment sonically without sacrificing content (the 10 tracks clock in at just over 47 minutes). Even if it is pop music, Moon Taxi isn’t afraid to get trippy, and all the production in the world can’t mask the band’s earnest work ethic and hefty ambition. Despite the facelift, all the things that brought the band success are still intact, proving Moon Taxi is not only ready for the radio, they’re downright suited for it.

MOON TAXI - Cabaret

Moon Taxi – Cabaret (2012)

With a name like Moon Taxi, the casual music fan might expect an electronica untz-fest that sounds better after midnight. Being so wrong rarely feels so right.
Cabaret is a refreshing effort that is earnest without succumbing to naïveté. “Mercury” begins the album in a rolling sonic wave, and the title track blends a tender chorus with easy-on-the-ears guitar work. “Hypnus” finds the band in its retro-80s new wave comfort zone, a space where the band clearly expresses nostalgic affection for the decade, but redeploys it in a way that sounds anything but derivative. “Hideaway” comes across as a firm nod to the Chili Peppers with a certain hop… — glidemagazine 4.5/5
…and Kiedis-esque vocal phrasing, while tracks like “Radio” feature dangerously catchy refrains (“It’s on the radio / It’s in my head”).
“Whiskey Sunsets” has a grin-inducing little guitar riff that recalls the old school Knight Rider theme song, and is balanced by kaleidoscopic work on the keys before finishing with dual guitars hitting the hippie hotspots on the higher end of the frets as the culminating chorus “I know that I’m gonna be up all night” provides an elegant finish. The “Wait, did they just do that?” moment of the album emerges on “Square Circles” that features Matisyahu spitting verses for the band.
Cabaret is one of those densely layered albums with enough going on to think it would sound spectacular on headphones. It’s difficult to pinpoint any must-hear tracks that shine above the others, but this band rolls deep, son! – after multiple listens, there really isn’t any filler to be had among the dozen songs that flow from one to the next with ease. Moon Taxi is a band that can really craft a song, understands arrangements and composition, and maintains artistic integrity despite its mainstream affability. It’s not much of a stretch to think these guys could blow up–touring this spring with Perpetual Groove and Galactic won’t hurt—and enjoy popular and critical success in 2012.
Moon Taxi is a totally unique rock and roll outfit from Nashville, Tennessee. Their music covers a whole spectrum of styles yet maintains a truly original sound that is guaranteed to drive the listener into fits of euphoria. Their debut C.
D, Melodica, is a true album, one that holds up from beginning to end with nary a dull moment. Packed with inventive songwriting, top-notch musicianship, and style to spare, Melodica will find a place with people of all ages and fans of all genres.                                                                                                                http://fp.io/7e3f84d9/
