Album Notes
by cdbaby
"Great Caesar's Ghost is a band of of seven accomplished musicians that give their interpretation of great american music. Much like jazz and classical musicians, they strive to re-read the great compositions of decades past. Included in their repertoire is original music and selections from the blues and rock oriented music of the late sixties and early seventies era. This includes The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers Band, many of the Blues Masters, and more. GCG's sound is generated by three guitars, bass, a Hammond B-3, congas, timbales, and dual drum kits, which capture the true spirit of the music that they play. For those who like jam oriented blues/jazz/rock, Great Caesar's Ghost will not dissapoint."

Great Caesar's Ghost has received national airplay on XM RADIO for the past four years and has quickly begun building a national following. CHECK OUT THE WEBSITE!!

Larry Hunter
Bassist Larry Hunter is a veteran singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Having performed with Merl Saunders, Floyd Dixon, and Kingfish with Bob Weir, he has also performed and recorded with Moby Grape, Steve Marriott, and The Jerry Miller Band.
All this experience, teamed with his writing style, culminated in the formation of his own band, HEROES. Over the last six years most of his time has been spent in the studio producing and playing guitar and bass on two albums, while playing bass on four others. One of those efforts is his own album, "CABIN FEVER".  (http://www.cdbaby.com/larryhunter)
Ray Penney
"Ray Penney's faultless guitar playing will transport you." (Val Leonhart Smalkin, Syndicated Music Columnist). "A sound so crisp and resonant, you can almost feel his fingers sliding across the strings." (New York Newsday). "Through so many stylings, encompassing so much territory, Ray Penney was born to play guitar." (Southampton Press) This is a sampling of reviews received by award-winning guitarist Ray Penney. He has toured with various outfits and done extensive studio work. While working primarily as a rhythm and blues guitarist, he recorded and performed with a large variety of artists including fellow guitarist Brian Setzer and the late Roy Buchanan. He has shared the stage with such greats as B.B. King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Albert Collins. As a solo artist he has released multi-award winning children's instrumental recordings, some of which can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/Goodmorning-Guitar-Classic-Melodies/dp/B0002MIDE6 , as well as being recorded on various solo guitar collections distributed by Mel Bay Publications.
Mario Cruz
Born and raised in Ft. Worth, Texas, at an early age, Mario was plucking out tunes by ear from his mom's piano. Now residing in New York, he has had the privilege to tour and/or record with an impressive list of some of music's biggest luminaries. From jazz artists Bob James to David Benoit; pop icons such as Bruce Springsteen, Joe Cocker and Linda Ronstadt; legends like Lou Rawls and Ray Charles; Mario's musical interests are equaled only by his diversity.
As early as high school, he was writing compositions for his jazz ensemble. This created an interest in jazz music that was encouraged by highly regarded musical educators Curtis Wilson of TCU, Leon Breeden of the University of North Texas, and Whit Sidener of the University of Miami. While playing with these great ensembles, Mario used this opportunity to arrange and compose many pieces that were performed and recorded, even by the Ft. Worth Symphony.
At the University of Miami, Mario had the good fortune to work with jazz great Jaco Pastorius. He subsequently went on the road and recorded with Jaco and the "Word of Mouth" Orchestra. Featuring an "all-star" band that included "Toots" Thielemans, Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer and Peter Erskine, this experience proved to be an invaluable musical inspiration. However, it was joining up with the legendary rock-fusion group "Blood, Sweat and Tears" that paved the way from Mario to make his way to New York.
Several years of paying "dues" opened other professional doors such as world tours with Bruce Springsteen, Dave Edmunds, Natalie Cole and blues artist Willie Deville. It set the ground work for an extensive resume of TV, jingle and motion picture studio work as a player. In addition, Mario has written and arranged many compositions that have been used in TV shows, commercials, jingles and movie soundtracks; recorded on his and other artists’ CD’s; and performed by many academic and professional jazz and symphonic ensembles.
Ed DiCapua
Journeyman Ed Dicapua is one of two drummers for Great Caesar's Ghost. Ed also plays congas and various percussion instuments in addition to his drumming duties. Ed has studied percussion since 1970 which culminated with his receiving his Master of Science in Music from C.W. Post as well as Doctoral study at New York University. Ed has maintained his private teaching practice since 1979, where he teaches drum, percussion and music theory. Ed has worked extensively with Richard Gilks at EMI Studio Recordings. He was also a member of the Chris Duarte Band where he recorded and toured extensively. Ed has also performed with: Julio Fernandez, Richie Cannata, G. E. Smith, Benny Goldstein, Jerry Jermott, Mary Wells, Dan Delaney, Jim Cameron, Doug McClean, Makoto Takenaka, Chicago Blues Club, Hiromatsu Suzuki, The Platters, Lee Genesis, Louisiana Red, Brook Benton, Shannon Early, Tom De Petris, Toby Walker, Rob Ames, Tracie Robbins, Twin Gold and has shared the stage with Rick Derringer, Edgar Winter, Canned Heat, B.B. King, Greg Allman, Dickey Betts, Rebbeca Paris, Tiger Bakau, Commander Cody, Heavy Metal Horns, and Sly Stone. Ed is endorsed by GMS Drum Co., Vic Firth Sticks, Istanbul Mehmet Cymbals, Danmar Percussion USA,  and Levy's Leathers: Drum, Cymbal, and Stick Bags, Attack Drum Heads, and Universal Percussion.
Larry Schmid
Singer and guitarist Larry Schmid played in a number of bands before dedicated his time to his recording studio in the early nineties. Larry ran Applewild Studio for almost ten years, working with a variety of local and big name talent. Larry also recorded two of his own albums (Mr. Gray) with fellow band mate Bosco Michne. Both albums were produced by G.E. Smith. After closing the studio, Larry began spending more time with his Les Pauls, which had become neglected during his tenure as engineer, producer, and studio manager. It was at this time that Great Caesar's Ghost came together. Larry has played with G.E. Smith of Saturday Night Live fame, Simon Kirke of Bad Company and Free, and Paul Ossola of the Saturday Night Live Band. He has recorded Steve Holly of Paul McCartney and Wings, T-Bone Wolk of Hall and Oates and the Billy Joel Band, Jazz pianist Eliani Elias, and GE Smith, among many others.
Keith Hill
Keith Hill holds down the Hammond B-3 and piano duties for Great Caesar's Ghost. Having been born into a musical family, Keith has been playing since the age of four. He studied music in college and went on to do post graduate work in a private setting. He has toured throughout the United States and is a veteran entertainer. He has the uncanny ability to remember most of what he has ever listened to and can play most tunes on demand. In addition to his duties in GCG he also spends a great deal of time in the studio working on various projects, as well as making time for his private teaching practice. He also conducted the Boston Pops.

Album Notes

Great Caesar’s Ghost is a five member band from Long Island, New York. Their newest album, Dragonfly, is their

eighth release since forming in 2004. The band’s first two releases, Live at Berkner Hall with G.E. Smith and One

More Ride, included colaborations with G.E. Smith (Saturday Night Live, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, David Bowie). The

band also released a double live album, Live with Butch Trucks, with Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks in

2012. Great Caesar’s Ghost has garnered a reputation for their unique interpretation of a generation of great

American music.

Dragonfly represents two years of recording, following the death of original band member and guitarist Ray Penney

in 2012. Great Caesar’s Ghost, once again, puts their own touches on two Allman Brothers standards, “In Memory of

Elizabeth Reed” and “Black Hearted Woman,” as well as a rendition of The Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen,” which

detours momentarily into the Allman’s “Mountain Jam”.

Great Caesar’s Ghost offers up two originals, one of which is a Santana/Allmanesque instrumental called“Dragonfly,”

and “Show of Hands,” a groove oriented vocal number. The album also offers very strong versions of Neil Young’s

“Cortez The Killer,” The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil,” and Alan Tousaint’s “Get Out My Life Woman.” The

group also shows off its jazzier side with a unique version of Miles Davis’ “So What.”

Band members include; Bosco Michne (guitar and vocals), Ed DiCapua (drums ad percussion), Larry Schmid (slide

guitar, guitar, and vocals), Keith Hill (piano and Hammond B-3), and new member Klyph Black (bass guitar), who

played for many years with The Zen Tricksters.

Hittin The Note magazine said this about Great Caesar’s Ghost:
“......Every now and then a band comes across our radar that has that rare ability to ‘hit the note.' It is even

rarer for us to come across a band that can play the Allman Brothers' music so well that it gets our attention.

Great Caesar's Ghost is such a band."

"Better Off Dead" represents some of the best versions of Grateful Dead songs by the band Great Caesar's Ghost that have been recorded over the past six years. Many of these tracks appear on GCG's other three CD's: "Live at Berkner Hall with GE Smith", "One More Ride", and "Means To An End". All of these CD's have been heard coast to coast on xm/sirius radio. Great Caesar's Ghost is not a cover band nor a tribute act and do play a great deal of their own original music. "Better Off Dead" is what a lot of people have been asking for: all the DEAD covers together in one place....so here they are!!

Album Notes

"To play the music of the Allman Brothers Band, and play it well, you need chops and technique and first-class musicianship, but you also need more than that.

There is a spirit to their music, a feeling that it creates in both the performers and the listener when it's done properly. Original ABB bassist Berry Oakley had a term for those magical moments when the universe aligns and everybody is feeling the music. He called it "hittin' the note."

At Hittin' The Note magazine, every now and then a new band comes across our radar that has that rare ability to "hit the note." It is even more rare for us to come across a band that can play the Allman Brothers' music so well that it gets our attention. Great Caesar's Ghost is such a band.

It's not that they copy the Allmans' music exactly. Considering that the ABB themselves never play a song the same way twice, that would be pointless. Rather, they embody that same spirit of joyous communion that makes the original versions so special, while still putting their own stamp on them.
So their version of "Les Brers" has a Marshall Tucker-ish flute solo where one of the guitar solos would be, for example, but it still respects the original in every way.

Just as a jazz band interprets old standards and makes them their own, Great Caesar's Ghost has taken the time to really get inside these tunes, and I think you will enjoy what they found there."
