OYSTERHEAD - Bonnaroo 2006
OYSTERHEAD
Bonnaroo 2006 [ 2CD]
Live on What Stage, Bonnaroo, Manchester, TN; June 16, 2006. Very good to excellent stereo soundboard?
There are some who feel that one of the memorable moments of Oysterhead’s 2006 Bonnaroo gig was, at the end of Pseudo Suicide, drummer Stuart Copeland exclaiming over what had been a very invigorating set: “Oh you people of Bonnaroo, you’re so beautiful… I want to take off my clothes… and come and dance among you!”
To call Oysterhead an alternative band doesn’t seem to quite hit it. It’s a supergroup all right, featuring bassist Les Claypool of Primus, guitarist Trey Anastasio of Phish and drummer Stuart Copeland of The Police. Experimental punk/funk metal perhaps?
Steve Bekkala, reviewing the group’s one and only album (so far), The Grand Pecking Order, for the All Music Guide, noted: “Copeland in particular appears newly rejuvenated, playing with an inspired abandon unheard from him in years; his energetic drumming practically leaps out of the speakers right from the beginning of the first track onward… With only two tracks exceeding five minutes in length, the group never loses sight of instilling concise, catchy hooks into their tunes, whether it’s the bouncy funk of Mr. Oysterhead, the circular melodies of Owner Of The World, or the whimsical Birthday Boys.
Oysterhead are nothing but spacey and heady.
According to the wikipedia, the group was originally intended for a singular live performance at New Orleans Saenger Theatre on May 4, 2000. In 2001, Oysterhead officially reformed to record and release an album entitled The Grand Pecking Order, which featured nine new tracks in addition to four songs originally debuted in New Orleans. The release of this album was supported by a brief tour of North America, after which the members went their separate ways.
Until the 2006 Bonnaroo Music Festival.
Justin Ward of livemusicblog.com noted: “It was on my radar as the ‘must-see’ set at Bonnaroo 2006 and you better believe that if I was there at the festival, I wouldn’t have missed it for the world… Oysterhead rocked the main stage on Friday afternoon and surprised everyone with how well they could actually sound by the end of the set. Musically, there are some real moments of joy in the set…”
Probably, producer and recording engineer Rich Blatt, who also posted pictures of the gig on his website, summed it up best: “The Oysterhead show was amazing. Truth is that I couldn’t hum a single melody of any of the songs they played, nor could I repeat any of the lyrics. But, in this case, it doesn’t matter at all…
“This show was a tour de force (gawd do I sound like an ’80s rock journalist or what…?) of raw jamming talent. The story is that Oysterhead had not played together since 2001. There were a few end-of-song trainwrecks that were nicely and musically covered up, but for the most part the smooth interplay of their musicianship was something remarkable to witness…
“But overall, weird sh*t and all, it was great fun to watch. Certainly part of that was the fact that these three world-class talents were themselves clearly having more fun than should be allowed in this life.”
And it certainly shows.
Thanks to Lincoln Park Mark for sharing the tracks.

* Les inquired about a "Les is Evil" sign in the audience, and said he wasn't sure that was fair, that if it meant that out of Trey Anastasio, Stewart Copeland, and himself, then he was probably the most evil, but that guys like Marilyn Manson and GG Allin are a heck of a lot more evil than he is. Comment: Drums And Tuba opened. Trey wore Fishman's signature dress,
Les wore a pig mask for the first two songs, then a wore a black hat.
Stewart's face was painted
%Trey quotes much of "Stash" in jam
*The Kinks cover (Trey sang)
**The Police cover (Les sang 1 verse)
# Trey was very chatty. He played his "musical costume" and sang lyrics to several
Jon Fishman classics including "Love You," "Bike," and "Cracklin' Rosie."
Trey then mentioned that "you too can own the entire Jon Fishman catalogue for only $19.95!"
Trey then introduced Les as "someone who really sucks" and then introduced Stewart and said
"When I was 15 my biggest dream was to be in a band with Stewart Copeland. He was my cream dream.
Stewart 'The guy who has sold way more recordings than Les or I' Copeland."
Show had a very special vibe to it. The band was visibly animated and festive.

OYSTERHEAD - THE GRAND PECKING ORDER
Oysterhead - The Grand Pecking Order (2001)
My mind damn near exploded when I found discovered this gem during my junior year of high school. At the time, I was really into Phish and Primus, and...well, for someone who likes those bands, this album's something of a mindfuck.
With Primus' Les Claypool on bass (slip slap slap-ing the shit out of those strings), The Police's Stewart Copland (who lays down some tight pockets), and Phish's Trey Anastasio (who, at what was undoubtably an oxy-ed out low point, hits a home run), this is the power trio to end all power trios. Each member is undoubtably a master of their instrument, and with this one-off side project, they really stretch out quite a bit.
What immediately makes the album stick out is the lovely, lush, colorful production. Claypool and Anastasio's past studio albums tend to stick to what they can do live--both have masterpieces under their belts, but "The Grand Pecking Order" is very much a departure. Full of overdubs, rich textures (thanks largely in part to The Matterhorn, Anastasio's custom guitar with--get this--a fuckin' theremin made out of fuckin' antlers attached to the side), and silly voices, the album is light enough for constant listening but complex enough to listen to constantly. That's right, I fucking went there.
Anyways, even if you're one of those snobs who won't touch jam bands with a ten-foot-pole, I implore you to give this a listen. Or I'll poke you with my ten-foot-pole.
"When all else has been done and said / you best look out for Mr. Oysterhead!"
Thank You. I really enjoyed this album
When is a supergroup not a supergroup? When it's stellar members don't tote along the sonic baggage of their former groups into their new collective endeavor. In that spirit, it's time for the world to meet Oysterhead. This power trio consists of Police drummer Stewart Copeland, Primus bassist/vocalist Les Claypool, and Phish guitarist/Jerry Garcia of the Gen-X set Trey Anastasio. Whether fans of these gents' former bands are impressed that THE GRAND PECKING ORDER doesn't rehash former glories, or disappointed that echoes of great bands past can't be heard to their satisfaction, Oysterhead must be given their due. There's not even a trace of rock-star pomposity to be found in these tunes, which are defined by quirky, often-humorous lyrics, and slippery, funky grooves that make the most out of Copeland's superhuman polyrhythms and Claypool's wide variety of bass tones. For diehard Primus fans, there's probably more of Claypool's past at work in the sound than that of the other members, but Oysterhead is still very much it's own group.
Recorded at The Barn, Vermont in April 2001.
Audio Mixer: Toby Wright.
Recording information: The Barn, VT (04/2001).
Photographer: Danny Clinch.
