FRANK ZAPPA - Bucse Festival - Budapest, Hungary
Frank Zappa
Recorded live on June 30th 1991 at
Bucse Festival - Budapest, Hungary
This recording is sadly Frank Zappa's final public performance.
The band consisted of FZ and 4 Hungarian (Gypsy) jazz musicians who were
invited to support FZ. There was a soundcheck in the morning (Track 1),
where they played for about 15 mintues. In the evening, FZ was introduced
by Mayor Gabor Demszky, who had invited him to Budapest for the Summer Bucse Festival.
Then Frank says the song they're going to play will be called "One Of A Kind".
They Jammed for about 20 minutes, and then came back for a 10 minute Encore.
That was it. Frank doesn't play too much, most of the time he let the band
play (or conducted it) and waits for the right moment to join in.
My favorite is the soundcheck. His guitar sounds really beautiful.
This performance has never been officially released.
Tracks 1-4 are recorded from the audience with a HI8 video camera.
Track 5 is from the TV broadcast of the show..which is soundboard..but edited
a bit, so it's not complete, like the audience recoding is. Anyway here's both!
Enjoy!
1. Soundcheck Jam
2. FZ Speech
3. One of a Kind
4. Two of a Kind
5. Full TV Broadcast
Tracks 1-4 from low gen audience video
Track 5 from low gen video TV broadcast edit of the show (sbd)

17. Stink-Foot [Apostrophe (') version]
This was a radio promo to promote the new Läther release. The cover depicts a small radio that is spotted like a cow, with pink touch-ups. There is a thought bubble coming out of the radio that says: "ZAPPA: LEFT OF THE DIAL". Below it says "includes selections from the legendary Läther".
From JWB:
Left of the Dial is, in my opinion, the best Zappa compilation that Ryko ever attempted to put together, promotional or otherwise. Great editing, flow and track selection.

There have been many dubious live offerings by the classic Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen over the years. This is not to say that the tapes weren't licensed in some way -- perhaps they put some much needed pocket change in the various ex-members' pockets, which is fine. But this one is an authoritative reissue; one of these two discs has not previously been heard on CD. In some ways, this is the real Grail for those looking for Lost Planet Airmen rarities and shows. Issued on the SPV Blue imprint, disc one in this collection, recorded in 1973 at the Armadillo World Headquarters, contains the editing-room casualties from the band's first live album, Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas. While the released set has the official distinction of being one of Rolling Stone mag's greatest 100 records of all time, hardcore fans knew it was in some ways a hatchet job because it doesn't flow the way a Commander show usually did. What's on this disc is the reason: 13 of these cuts were issued on the Music Avenue label as Texas Roadhouse Favorites in 2006, but this set contains 17. It's the rock and blues set with a few country and trucker faves such as "What Made Milwaukee Famous" and "Truck Driving Man" thrown in. But this is a burning live rock and blues set. The horn section was especially tight on this night, and never sounded better. The second disc was recorded at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY, in 1975, during the band's Warner Bros. period. For those in the know, the Warner recordings (reissued by Wounded Bird on CD, thank God) are vastly underrated and are essential for anyone interested in this band. (This does not include the live We've Got a Live One Here!, an abomination issued to fulfill a contract.) This set is a little dodgier in terms of sound, but the performance is even stronger. With 25 tracks clocking in at 78 minutes, this one is full of old and new tunes, originals, and covers: band standards like "Down to Seeds and Stems Again," "Truck Driving Man," "My Window Faces South," "Hot Rod Lincoln," and "Lookin' at the World Through a Windshield" are all here, but so are readings of "Cajun Rag," "Everybody's Doin' It," "Diggy Diggy Lo," "Keep on Lovin' Her," "Wine Do Your Stuff," "I'm Comin' Home," "Mama Tried," "Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar," and "Don't Let Go." It also includes the return of pedal steel boss Bobby Black to the band's fold after a stint with Barbara Mandrell. The rougher sound of the second volume does nothing to diminish the crackling energy and sheer sophisticated musicality of the performance. This double set -- at a reasonable price -- is a must for any fan of the Commander Cody/Lost Planet Airmen show. ~ Thom Jurek

OSI - Fire Make Thunder
A veritable prog metal "supergroup," O.S.I. -- the "Office of Strategic Influence" -- was formed by Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos, Chroma Key and former Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore, and Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, with help from Gordian Knot bassist Sean Malone. Like similar collaborations, such as Transatlantic or Liquid Tension Experiment (many of which feature the same rotating cast of six or eight talented players), O.S.I.'s debut album is more than the sum of its disparate parts. Office of Strategic Influence masterfully blends '70s-styled progressive rock, heavily influenced by King Crimson and Pink Floyd, with an '80s-era heavy metal aesthetic, and the avant-garde sound of underground indie rockers such as Max Vague.

ZILLA
Zilla is a side project for Michael Travis, drummer in the String Cheese Incident, who is joined by Aaron Holstein (playing guitars and keyboards) and Jamie Janover (playing hammered dulcimer and electric kalimba, among other instruments) on this "100% Live 100% Improvised" album. The key instruments turn out to be Janover's, if only because they are the most unusual. One simply does not hear a hammered dulcimer played as the lead instrument over a rock rhythm section, playing extended instrumentals (not to mention a kalimba), and the sound has considerable charm. As might be expected, the pieces lack structure and tend to ramble, with the musicians playing fast and intensely at some moments, then relaxing into becalmed passages. But the unusual instrumentation makes for consistently interesting listening ZILLA

RONNIE EARLE AND THE BROADCASTERS - BLUES GUITAR VIRTUOSO LIVE IN EUROPE
Although not released until 1995, this CD was recorded live in 1993 in Bremen, Germany. Live in Europe is Earl's tribute to his major influences, and Ronnie plays his favorite guitar throughout: a 1962 red Strat. The fast, driving "San-Ho-Zay" and "Blues for the West Side" go out to Magic Sam; "The Stumble" to Freddie King; "Thank You Mr. T-Bone" to T-Bone Walker and Duke Robillard (who inspired Earl to learn T-Bone). "Thank You Mr. T-Bone" features some cool call-and-response between Earl and Bruce Katz on the Hammond B-3. It segues nicely into "Akos," where you'll find more great B-3 (check out the improvised "Summertime" riff). An all-instrumental offering, Live in Europe includes a handful of tunes found on its predecessor, Still River, including "Szeren," "Rego Park Blues," and the aforementioned "Blues for the West Side." "Contrition," a slow, soulful tune penned by Katz, has some jaw-dropping runs by Earl. One can only imagine what it must have been like to be one of the lucky souls at this show. The only fault to be found on this album is the mislabeling of several tunes on the cover. (For example, "The Stumble" is listed as "Not Now Kovitch.") Still, it's this reviewer's all-time favorite album -- thank you, Mr. Earl. - cduniverse.com
