THE GRATEFUL DEAD - Hollywood Festival North West England 1970

Grateful Dead - Hollywood Festival North West England 1970 [CD + DVD]

As John Peel so rightly says Hollywood Festival and the arrival of the Grateful Dead for their first performance in the UK was a defining moment. The late sixties / early seventies counter culture and music scene in the UK had always aspired to West Coast USA bands and their ideology of large outdoor concerts. North West England with a strong counter culture, arts and music scene would go on after Hollywood Festival in subsequent years to see festival events and large outdoor rock concerts no longer just held in the south of England.

In the same spirit as the Grateful Dead and crowd gathering at Hollywood in 1970 the North West would go on to stage Bickershaw Festival 1972 (Grateful Dead again) , Deeply Vale Festivals 1976-1979, Rivington Pike Free Festival 1976 and 1977, the Northern Carnival Against the Nazis, Alexandra Park Manchester 1978, and the Northern Carnival Against Cruise Missiles, Alexandra Park Manchester 1981. Some archive film exists of these other great music/counter culture events and if they haven't been covered yet by DVD they may well be soon. Thanks to the late Mr Burgoyne of Burgoyne Film and Audio Services the audio and the film footage of The Grateful Dead (Free, Family and Screaming Lord Sutch ) at the Hollywood Festival 1970 was recorded for posterity. Added to Mr Burgoyne's film was some footage supplied by Mr Colover. Originally archived by Burgoyne Film and Audio the whole lot was then forgotten for a few years but it has now finally seen the light of day with what bits of Grateful Dead film and stills there were, being integrated with the Burgoyne Grateful Dead sound recording in an artistic way.
This is not a big budget Woodstock movie production but it is an important glimpse at archive film and audio of the Grateful Dead's first visit to the UK. Put together by Burgoyne Film and Audio Services using their archive sound recordings of the event plus their rare film footage combined with Bob Colover's short bits of film and incorporating rare stills of the event what you have is a document of the first time the Grateful Dead came to play in the UK - fairly wacky disjointed film though it is in some parts as someone in the Grateful Dead's entourage spiked everyone involved on filming the event with LSD!!!!.
A bonus CD from the mixing desk is also included of the Grateful Dead's set. The DVD is NTSC region 0. A total of 17 live Grateful Dead tracks, 5 on the film and 12 on the cd. The tracks on the CD are different to those on the DVD"

THE INFAMOUS STRINGDUSTERS – Silver Sky

The Infamous Stringdusters – Silver Sky (2012)
Drawing on the talents of up-and-coming Nashvillians Andy Hall, Chris Eldridge, Chris Pandolfi, Jeremy Garrett, Jesse Cobb, and Travis Book, The Infamous Stringdusters manage to balance a fluency in old-timey bluegrass with indie jamgrass sensibilities. They released their first album, Fork in the Road, on Sugar Hill in early 2007, which resulted in three awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association later that year. An eponymous sophomore effort arrived in 2008, followed by Things That Fly in 2010.
The Infamous Stringdusters release a new studio album, Silver Sky, on March 13 via the band’s own High Country Recordings label. The album takes a new direction with the help of hip-hop producer…
…Billy Hume (Nas, David Banner, Ludacris) and also marks the group’s move to a five-piece band following the departure of founding mandolin player, Jesse Cobb.
“Working with Billy has been simply amazing,” says guitarist Andy Falco.”‘Human Being’ (his Stringduster nickname) has been able to bring out yet another dimension to The Infamous Stringdusters’ music in the studio with his endless creative ideas, outside the box thinking and powerful mixes.”

BLACK ROSE [with LES DUDEK & CHER]

Black Rose - Black Rose (1980)

Black Rose was a band which featured Cher on vocals and her then boyfriend Les Dudek on guitar and vocals. Their only release was this 1980 album for Casablanca Records. If you read about this album and were expecting an album similar to "Allman & Woman - Two The Hard Way", then you're in for a surprise. Not sure it'll be a pleasant one, though. This album has none of the flash of the Les Dudek albums. Instead it's a Power Pop exercise on which Cher gets to rock out some. It's not bad, just not terribly good either. I prefer the soulful sounds of her album with Gregg anytime. But since I'm a sucker for Les Dudek, I just had to complete my collection. So, are there any good Les Dudek songs on here? Hmm, sort of. Actually, he only gets to sing lead vocals on one track, a duet called "You Know It". I like that song, and it would fit nicely as a bonus track on his "Gypsy Ride" album. So, for that you should get this. Tricky move to start an album with a song entitled "Never Should've Started". For completists only..

COLOSSEUM - THE GRASS IS GREENER [RELEASED ONLY IN THE US.]

The second album from this British jazz-rock quintet rocks harder than their first outing. Their take on Jack Bruce's "Rope Ladder to the Moon" is especially strong, and "Jumping off the Sun" has a similar feel. "Bolero" has been done to death, but guitarist Dave Clempson (who later replaced Peter Frampton in Humble Pie) uses it to launch a showcase of guitar fireworks. In fact, Clempson's blazing guitar licks shine throughout. Dick Heckstall-Smith once again impresses on his arsenal of saxophones and woodwinds, and the seven-and-a-half minute title cut which he co-wrote with drummer Jon Hiseman is a highlight of this disc.

Digitally remastered edition of this 1970 album from one of the pivotal Progressive bands that emerged in the second part of the '60s. One of the most influential of the early British Prog Rock bands, Colosseum fused an adventurous approach to Rock with strong Jazz and Blues influences and classical keyboard accents. In contrast to other albums by Colosseum, The Grass Is Greener was released only in the United States. It includes a few songs that were on the earlier release, Valentyne Suite, as well as several cuts only released on this album. Talking Elephant. - cduniverse.com

COLOSSEUM II - "War Dance" (1978)

Colosseum II - "War Dance" (1978) @320

Studio Album, released in 1977
This supergroup must be one of the best kept secrets of Prog/Jazz Rock.Featuring the sticksman extraordinaire Hiseman(Colosseum,Tempest) on drums and percussion,Guitar God Gary Moore(Thin Lizzy,Midnight Blues Band) on guitar and Keyboard Wizard Don Airey (Rainbow,Whitesnake,Black Sabbath,Jethro Tull etc) plus John Mole on bass guitar, this band can really play.

The album is virtually all instrumental apart from the dreadful "Castles" (hence the 3 star rating and not 4).An exciting feature of Colosseum II is the duelling between the keyboards and guitar which can be seen to best effect on "Fighting Talk" where Airey knocks out some really terrific Minimoog leads and Moore growls back on his Gibson, and on "Inquisition" which features stunning guitar flights on electric and flamenco answering Airey's spacey keyboards.

Other standouts include "Star Maiden/Mysterioso/Quasar" which features some nice bass by John Mole before zipping off into more guitar and keyboard mayhem, the funky "Major Keys" and the dazzling title track:"War Dance".

Hardcore lovers of Fusion may find this album too rocky, but I love this album which but for "Castles" and the fact that it is more rock than Prog would be a 4 star nominee by me. Definitely a 3 1/2 star effort though.
