Review
A very special vintage concert performance by one of the most critically acclaimed bands to come out of the San Francisco 60s psychedelic rock movement, Quicksilver Messenger Service!

Features the classic line-up performing their entire second album, Happy Trails - ranked at #189 on Rolling Stone s list of the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time!

What looks like a pretty exciting release is actually just a re-packaging of Quicksilver Messenger Service's 2nd album "Happy Trail" (1968). Just compare the track listing and the timings between the two: they are pretty identical.

How Purple Pyramid Records (a subsidy of Cleopatra Records) can get away with this obvious rip-off is beyond me, especially since BGO records (UK) just released a remastered "Happy Trails" in 2010.

Purple Pyramid's "shiny" new cover art is kinda interesting, but that's about it. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Capitol Records ends up suing the pants off of Purple Pyramid for copyright infringement.

As far as the music, this is prime Quicksilver Messenger Service. Live, improvisational and spontaneous. If you don't already have this in your QMS collection, this one is a must. The sound is exceptional with good stereo separation. Hard to believe this is even a live recording at all.

Thank you for the heads up about this being a mere reissue. I've had it in my wish list for a while but won't be buying it now.

I've been ripped off before, but never this blatantly! I scoured the web before I bought this CD as I already had Happy Trails on LP and I was wary of the identical track listing and the fact that it was amazing that unreleased live stuff from Quicksilver Messenger Service from 1969 had eluded all of us fanatics up until the present. The inside liner note that someone posted stated that this was an unknown performance from 1969 and the last one with Gary Duncan and made no mention that this was merely a reissue of Happy Trails, albeit with inferior sound quality; so I figured that this CD was a dream come true for us Quicksilver freaks. I'm still incredulous that Purple Pyramid could pull off a stunt like this and not be aware of the damage to their reputation! I mean, like, what were they thinking?

TONY WILLIAMS - EMERGENCY!

Tony Williams - "Emergency!" (1969) @320

During Tony Williams' stint with Miles Davis, he displayed an unparalleled mastery of time and texture, suggesting at once the meter-less pulsations of Milford Graves and Sonny Murray, and the polyrhythmic swing of Max Roach, Art Blakey and Philly Joe Jones. The Davis rhythm section (Williams, bassist Ron Carter, pianist Herbie Hancock) learned to superimpose fresh harmonies and rhythms on top of a flexible basic pulse, driven along by the drummer's percolating hi-hat. And when the band broke up, each member gravitated towards some aspect of the emerging new pop music: The Beatles, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix. And if Herbie felt the funk, Tony wanted to rock, and to that end he formed the most slamming, freewheeling organ trio in the history of jazz.

Emergency!, and its companion, Turn It Over, are about as good as it gets. Completely groundbreaking when released, the sound is avante garde even today. Williams plays like a man possessed and McLaughlin, whose guitar virtuosity carries more purpose and funk than it would later in his Mahavishnu Orchestra work, has never been better. The third member of this unlikely trio, organist Larry Young, contributes enormously to the sound's uniqueness with smeared chords that appear according to some unfathomable logic, he is always surprising and interesting.

The Tony Williams Lifetime played so loud that on club dates Williams needed monitors to hear the drums. Hard to imagine just three people produced this tidal wave of music. The singing is forgettable, although not horrible. But the melding of rock, blues, and jazz is truly astonishing. This has been called the first fusion album, and it's true that Williams, along with McLaughlin, were, in collaboration with Miles Davis, at the very edge of fusion. Whether it's the first can be debated, what's indisputable is the way Emergency! raises the bar for rock and jazz, from the vantage points of technical excellence, daring, and sheer unbridled intensity. A must-have recording. By El Lagarto (Ambler, PA).

Williams's group Lifetime, which looked on paper like an organ jazz-funk trio, produced in 1969 this headlong hybrid from jazz complexity and rock immediacy. Williams, fresh from edging Davis towards his jazz-rock-soul period, concocts a driving, high-volume fusion that has more conviction and flare than anyone else's would until the advent of the great Mahavishnu Orchestra a couple of years later. That band was led by Williams's collaborator here, John McLaughlin, as blistering and savvy a guitarist as any jazz-rock saw. Larry Young's organ is a skirmishing juggernaut, clearing and blasting into space above, behind, beneath, and between the drummer's crashing, jittering rhythms. A cautionary note: To be sure, Williams's singing on Emergency! is brave, at best, but it is blessedly limited. By Peter Monaghan.

THE RUNAWAYS - Japanese Singles Collection

The Runaways - Japanese Singles Collection

This collection brings all the band's Japanese singles for the first time together on CD. As a career overview the singles album is a perfect introduction to the Queens Of Noise, arguably the most perfect all-American girl rock band ever... with great simple riffs and choruses...

The Runaways were formed in L.A. and guided by Kim Fowley. At the time of formation, the band members aged 16-17 years old and soon went on to sign a record deal with Mercury Records.

This collection brings all the band's Japanese singles for the first time together on CD. The Runaways enjoyed huge success across Europe and Japan. With the band's various line ups, Joan Jett, Lita Ford and crew enjoyed a high profile through their singles releases and their exceptional live shows. This CD features all the band's highly collectable Japanese picture cover single sleeves, lyrics, discography and sleeve notes. Also, the CD features 2 bonus tracks, the UK single "Right Now" and it's b-side "Black Leather". This was to be the band's last single release.

There's no denying the Runaways' immense contribution to rock music. But that said, their studio recordings never truly reflected the raunchy punk attitude of their live shows. So perhaps the best way to experience the Runaways nowadays (since the band is long gone) is to start off with a "best-of" compilation, such as 2008's import set Japanese Singles Collection. As its title suggests, what you get are all of the band's singles issued in Japan (where the group was absolutely huge), in a pretty impressively assembled package -- which includes lyrics, discography, sleeve notes, etc. All of your favorite Runaways classics are included here, including "Cherry Bomb" (how this song didn't become an arena-shaking anthem remains a head-scratcher), "Blackmail," and "I Love Playing with Fire" (which along with "Cherry Bomb" would be re-recorded by Joan Jett early in her solo career), among countless others -- including the group's last-ever U.K. single, "Right Now," and its B-side, "Black Leather" (the latter penned by ex-Sex Pistols Steve Jones and Paul Cook). For a single-disc set of Runaways classics, Japanese Singles Collection is pretty hard to beat.

STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN and......triple trouble?

December - 1978 - Stubb's Barbecue, Lubbock, Texas

Stephen Ray Vaughan was born to Martha and Jackson Lee Vaughan at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas on October 3, 1954, three years after his brother, Jimmie Vaughan. Stevie's father, whose nickname became "Big Jim", was an asbestos worker whose job carried the family to cities across Texas. Wherever there was an opening, the family would pack up and move to another city.

The Vaughan family finally moved into a small house in Dallas. The tension in the home was high, however, as Big Jim had a temper when he drank alcohol.

Big Jim and Martha loved to dance to Western Swing, and it was the boys' first exposure to music. The Texas Playboys, a country band, would hang out at the Vaughans' house often, playing dominoes with Big Jim. The Playboys would bring alcoholic beverages to the house and Stevie would sneak sips when nobody was looking. This started him on his addiction to alcohol.

When Jimmie broke his shoulder playing football when he was 12, family friend Michael Quinn gave him his first guitar. Soon after, Stevie got one of his own: a plastic Roy Rogers toy guitar from Sears, with only three strings. Stevie recalls that it also came with a set of blankets.

The boys, uninterested in taking formal guitar lessons, taught themselves to play by listening to records by Jimi Hendrix, The Yardbirds, and The Beatles, that Jimmie brought home. The brothers were also drawn to blues music and taught themselves the guitar techniques of blues guitarists like Albert and B.B. King, Otis Rush, and Buddy Guy.

At the age of 15, Jimmie was the lead guitarist in a local cover band called The Chessmen, and played gigs all over Texas. One day when bandmate Doyle Bramhall came to pick up Jimmie for a gig, he saw young Stevie playing along to the song Jeff's Boogie by The Yardbirds. Bramhall became the first to tell Stevie Ray Vaughan that he was actually good.

When he was 17, Vaughan got a tattoo of a peacock on his chest. It was initially supposed to be much bigger, but realizing the pain of the process altered Stevie's body-art plans.

Stevie was playing in rock bands by age 12. His first recording was for a garage rock band called "A Cast of Thousands", and his style stood out. He had paying gigs when he entered high school: first with Jimmie's new band, Texas Storm, and then with his own group, Blackbird. Stevie would play late night sets at local bars.

Stevie's and Jimmie's focus on music caused their grades to drop. Their alarmed parents tried to intervene, but it was too late: in 1967, Jimmie moved in with Doyle. Stevie, left at home, decided to take a job washing dishes at the local Dairy Mart. Part of his job was to clean out the trash bin, which required standing on top of 55-gallon wooden-lidded barrels that were used for storing grease. One day the wooden lid broke on one of the barrels and Stevie fell up to his chest in grease--and was fired for breaking the lid. He decided that, rather than try to get another job like this, he would pursue his dream of being a guitar player like Albert King, his current favorite.

 1970s
In early 1971, both Jimmie and Doyle grew tired of the fading music scene in Dallas and moved to Austin to give it another try. A year later, Stevie followed with his band, Blackbird. At 17 years old, he dropped out of high school during Christmas break and hit the road.

When he first came to Austin, Stevie and his band didn't have much money, so he would sleep on a barroom pool table, but he fit in with the more appreciative music scene on the east side of town. With blues clubs like the Soap Creek Saloon, Vulcan Gas Company, and Antone's, Stevie could trade licks with the blues masters he grew up listening to. Clifford Antone, one of the club owners, took notice and practically begged Albert King to let 17-year-old Stevie play guitar with him. After much convincing, he finally agreed--and was very impressed when he heard Stevie play his own licks.

Sharing riffs with these admired masters was Stevie's dream come true, but making a career in Austin turned out to be tougher than he had thought. In 1973, he joined a promising rock group called Krackerjack, which included future bassist Tommy Shannon, whom he met after a stint at a club in Dallas called "The Fog." Stevie quit when the leader decided they should wear makeup on stage. The next year, he was asked to join Marc Benno and the Nightcrawlers, a blues band that included singer Doyle Bramhall and future Bee Gees bassist Russ Powell. The Nightcrawlers drove from Texas to Los Angeles to record an album, but Benno's record label rejected the tapes, and Stevie traveled back to Texas.

In 1975, he hooked up with another popular Austin group, Paul Ray and the Cobras, a two-guitar band with Stevie in the background. After two years, they only had one single recorded, and Stevie grew frustrated and quit. He was still in the shadow of his big brother. Jimmie's new group, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, were the talk of Austin, and became the house band at Antone's. In late 1977, Stevie decided it was time to put together a band of his own called "Triple Threat," which included bass player, W.C. Clark, Freddie "Pharoah" Walden on drums, and singer Lou Ann Barton.

On December 23, 1979, Stevie Vaughan married a tough-minded Lebanese woman named Lenora "Lenny" Bailey between sets at the Rome Inn in Austin, TX.

W.C. Clark left Triple Threat in mid-1978, and Stevie renamed the band "Double Trouble." He then asked drummer Chris Layton to join the band. After an embarrassing post-show incident with drunken Lou Ann, Stevie became the new lead singer and guitar player after he fired her. Around this time, he hired a management company called "Classic Management" that consisted of manager Chesley Milikin, and financial assistant, Frances Carr.
