Dave Edmunds had seen the hoopla surrounding Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band tour in 1989, when the former Beatle gathered a group of celebrity musician friends to form a touring band playing songs from the Fab Four, his solo hits, and all the best loved hits of the individual group members. The Starr tour had such a positive response that Edmunds decided he would try something similar.

Dave Edmunds All Star Rock ’N’ Roll Revue gathered a quirky but powerful bunch of musical allies, many of whom had worked with Edmunds in the studio or in collaboration. Graham Parker (who had worked often with Edmunds and his cohort Nick Lowe), Fabulous Thunderbird lead vocalist Kim Wilson (who had collaborated with him), and ‘50s/’60s pop icon Dion were all part of the caravan of rock innovators that hit the road in the spring of 1990.

Although it was never released stateside, this show did eventually make it to record as a double disc in Japan only. In America, the show was broadcast in an abbreviated version on the King Biscuit Flower Hour, but this is the entire set and what a show it is. Opening with “Last Night,” a take-off on Little Richard’s “Lucille,” it begins and ends with a sampling of Dave Edmunds’ best work, including “I Knew The Bride When She Used To Rock and Roll,” “I Hear You Knockin'“(his 1971 solo hit), “Ju-Ju Man,” “Crawling From The Wreckage,” and “Small Things Mama,” which had been written expressly for Edmunds by his friend Bruce Springsteen.

The rest of the performance is a variety show that never stops delivering. The Edmunds band was truly an all-star outing, with guitarist Steve Cropper (Booker T & The MGs, Blues Brothers), Terry Williams (ex-Rockpile), Phil Chen (ex-Rod Stewart), the Memphis Horns, and others. Some of the material was catered to the band members’ involvement (such as “Dock Of The Bay,” which Cropper had written with Otis Redding).

The special guests, however, contribute the bulk of the big hits. Wilson reprises his cover of Sam & Dave’s “Wrap It Up” (which the Thunderbirds also had a radio hit with). He also sings their biggest hit, “Tuff Enuff.” Dion, whose career began on the doo-wop street corners of Brooklyn, NY in the 1950s with the Belmonts, delivers hits that spanned a dozen years, and included “Ruby Baby,” “Runaround Sue,” “The Wanderer,” and the poignant “Abraham, Martin & Joan,” which he released weeks after the assassination of Martin Luther King.

The most memorable of all the performances, hands down, goes to Graham Parker, the gritty British pub-rock icon. From the slow drive of “Local Girls,” to post-punk pop of “Slash & Burn,” to the pure urgency of “Soul Time” and “Heat Treatment,” Parker turns in a performance as strong as the early live shows he recorded with his old band, the Rumour.

The entire cast winds down the performance with a rollicking re-make of the Little Richard classic, “You Keep A Knockin'.” To hear such a classic son performed by this great ensemble of musicians, singers, and performers, is exhilarating, to say the least.

Graham Parker already had hit albums such as Squeezing Out Sparks (1979); The Up Escalator (1980), and The Real Macaw (1983) before he got another shot at the charts with The Mona Lisa’s Sister in 1988.

The second half of the ’80s also saw stripped down, credible releases from John Hiatt (Bring The Family, Slow Turning); John Mellencamp (The Lonesome Jubilee) and even Bruce Springsteen had a “minimalist” Tunnel Of Love. Perhaps leaning on the roots rock sound that was prevalent during the time - R.E.M. had Document and Green; The Replacements had Pleased To Meet Me; there were the self-titled Lone Justice album and follow-up Shelter; and Green On Red with No Free Lunch. That Graham Parker even covered The BoDeans’ She’s A Runaway showed what he was listening to.

This is what Philip Cheah wrote of The Mona Lisa’s Sister in BigO #34 (August 1988):

It’s an album that Graham Parker the songwriter and not the rocker is being pushed forward. You can tell by Parker’s raspy croon, as gentle and earnest as his cigarette-wrecked throat can oblige. It’s also his best set of lyrics since Squeezing Out Sparks.

Most of it is a reflection on the vicissitudes of fame. Back In Time is his version of Springsteen’s Glory Days, more pessimistic than the Boss could possibly be. In Parker’s view, his glory days will be remembering that “all old news is like print stains across the mind”, a direct reference to what it feels like to look at all his old news clippings…

But it’s in Success that offers Parker’s most chilling perspective of what it’s like being made to feel mediocre, the BIG theme of Mona Lisa’s Sister, the painting that was never used because the model didn’t smle. Parker’s struggle to get recorded provided him the insight that ‘You can’t be happy while/Someone else has a fistful/They glow from TV screens/Healthy strong and fiscal/And everybody slaps their/Back while you’re alone’.

Sound-wise, Parker has stepped back from his bar-room rockers. Instead his old pal, Brinsley Schwarz, and himself play tasteful guitar licks, understating rather than grandstanding. And when Parker covers Sam Cooke’s Cupid at the end of the record, he acknowledges what has kept him going all these years, since he left the pub-rock movement to join Elvis Costello in the New Wave back in ‘75, his love for great soulful music. There’s no lack of it here.

Guess old habits die hard and this gig at The Ritz (Parker was promoting the Mona Lisa album) - with its mix of bar-room rockers and crunchy roots rock tunes - is highly entertaining with Parker in jubilant form. And it’s no surprise many fans include this as one of the best Graham Parker shows being shared.

Graham Parker emerged from the British Pub-rock scene in the mid-70's and was the real originator of the developing 'angry young rocker' new wave music style. His non-stop, high-energy, incendiary live performances with The Rumour are legendary, and his later, more refined, compelling, and evocative songwriting continued to set high standards for all singer-songwriters. This is a fine radio broadcast from 1979, the height of The Rumour days (and in support of arguably their best album, Squeezing Out Sparks), features many of their most well-known songs and their trademark unrelenting pace for the whole show. So, here's to Graham Parker, another of the all-time great, but sadly under-appreciated rock artists.           http://fp.io/8e3de32d/

GRAHAM PARKER & The Rumour – Live at Rockpalast 1978 + 1980

Graham Parker & The Rumour – Live at Rockpalast 1978 + 1980 (2012)

Stereotyped early in his career as the quintessential angry young man, Graham Parker was one of the most successful singer/songwriters to emerge from England’s pub rock scene of the early ’70s. Drawing heavily from Van Morrison and the Rolling Stones, Parker developed a sinewy fusion of driving rock & roll and confessional folk-rock, highlighted by his indignant passion, biting sarcasm, and bristling anger. Two of his albums are listed in the Rolling Stone-magazine’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” (Squeezing Out Sparks and Howlin’ Wind).
Together with the Rumour – a fusion of young musicians from the English “roots-bands” of the time like Brinsley Schwartz – Graham Parker gave two shows at the Rockpalast. This 2CD-Set presents both concerts: The first from 1978 at the WDR-Studio, where The Rumour was backed up by a horn section, using the same type of band as on “Heat Treatment” (released in 1976, following on the heels of their debut album “Howlin’ Wind”, produced by Nick Lowe).
Graham Parker’s second appearance was at the Grugahalle Essen in 1980, where he opened the 7th Rockpalast Night. The compete concert (broadcast on ARD-TV in Germany and over the Eurovision Network throughout Europe) , not only presented th talents of Graham Parker And The Rumour, but also included The Police and Jack Bruce & Friends.
For the first time the BBC was there to record the concert. A sensation for the Rockpalast, but frustration for Graham Parker: The “Beeb” aired only part of the concert, but they were only interested in the superstars like The Police.
The Grugahalle concert also had a celebrity: Instead of keyboardist Bob Andrews, who played in the WDR-Studio concert, Nicky Hopkins sat at the Piano (formerly a member of The Jeff Beck Group, Quicksilver Messenger and The Steve Miller Band, as well as a sideman in numerous recordings for other famous groups such as The Beatles or The Rolling Stones).
The concert revolved around the songs on the just-released album “The Up Escalator” (1980), which was to be the final album that Graham Parker and The Rumour would release together.
