"Siberian Cat-Tru" - A Kitty Lickin' Discs Production

This seeding is in remembrance of Ginny, the cat that was the inspiration for Kitty Lickin' Discs. She passed yesterday. Some will remember her CD guides, back in the day when seeding, trading, and weeding CD's through the mail was still a thing. Ginny was a great cat and this one is dedicated to her! She will be missed.

This was remastered originally way back in 2003 for Yesswap, and may or may not have been seeded here before. This particular version is not currently on the tracker. The only difference between this version, and the one distributed in 2003 was that I made FLAC files from the original SHN's, and I cleaned up the fade out/tape flip in the big medley. The artwork was unique to say the least. With the exception of the cat who played the part of "Tick Wakeman" for the artwork, none of the other pets are still with us. Most serious Yes ROIO collectors will already have some version of this show, but this release has always been special to me.

Anyway, the original info file is listed below, Artwork is included in the torrent, and I will post it in attachments as well.

Comments: This is one of my best sounding bootlegs. This is an
extremely clear, low gen radio broadcast (or possibly soundboard).
Some static was removed using Wavelab, and the bass was increased a
bit. This was distrubuted on Yesswap, as "Siberian Cat-tru" and there
is some very silly artwork.

Show comments:
What can be said about this show, my all time favorite Yes line up, this is the line up when i first got into Yes back in '78/'79 after Tormato. My next door neighbor was a huge Yes freak and turned me on to them and i've been a huge fan ever since. They played the Sports Arena in May of 79 but i hadn't started going to concerts until August of that year so i never saw this line up until this show. It was awesome to see the five of them together playing these classic songs i had loved for so long and they didn't disappoint. Great set list, playing the ones you would expect along with several deep tracks like South Side, Revealing Science and Don't Kill the Whale. This is definetly one of my all time favorite shows, i hope you enjoy it.

The Tale of an Epic !
The year was 1973, one that would take on epic proportions in the world of
progressive rock. Genesis would start Selling England by the Pound, Jethro Tull wrote a Passion
Play, ELP conducted Brain Salad Surgery and Pink Floyd took us on a trip to the Dark Side of the
Moon. A vintage year to say the least. What could Yes do but to follow this incredibly creative
movement.
After the huge public success and critical acclaim of their last two albums,
Fragile and Close to the Edge, many thought that the band had found the right formula and would
follow the same path. Instead, Yes went where no one expected them to go. The release of Tales
from Topographic Oceans in November of 1973 came as a shock to many Yes fans and press critics
alike, not to mention the big heads at Atlantic records who were rather reluctant to have it
released in the first place. This double album consisted of only four songs which were based on
Sanskrit Shastric scriptures.
The concept and Jon Anderson’s ethereal lyrics were met with mixed reviews, even
from Fellow musicians within the band. Rich Wakeman for one was quite uncomfortable with it, as
he recalls: “Experimentation is fine, but it’s something you should do in your own time as you’re
writing and rehearsing the music, until that experiment is proven in your own mind. Once you
know where things are going, then you can put that music on record.  The music of Tales was not
proven in my mind. It wasn’t worked out !”
Experimental or not, the album was finished just the same, and a gigantic tour to
promote it lay ahead. Yes would perform some 75 concerts in 5 months. This tour started in
Bournemouth, England on November 16th, 1973 and would end in Rome, Italy on April 23rd, 1974.

The band had chosen to play the Whole of Topographic Oceans as well as the entire
Close to the Edge album, with Roundabout as the encore. It was to be an endurance marathon for
both musicians and fans. Chris Squire remarked, “Let’s just say it didn’t go down very well at
all !”
As the tour advanced, and Rick Wakeman became increasingly unhappy, the band
realized that the entire Tales album was perhaps a bit too much for an audience to grasp all at
once. At one point, The Remembering was just dropped from the set to make way for a couple more
familiar songs like Starship Trooper. The grand concept was turning into a nightmare. Disgusted
by the whole episode, Wakeman left Yes right after the tour, just as Bill Bruford had left a
year previous after being fed up with the endless development of the Close to the Edge album.
Tales from Topographic Oceans, has been, is, and probably will always remain the most
controversial album in Yes’s huge back catalog, but to the avid Yes fan, the album and the tour
that ensued were perceived as nothing but triumphant. Looking back on it now, one cannot help
but be taken by the majestic grandeur of the music offered in these four songs. Live recordings
from this tour are highly sought after by fans nowadays.
The present concert was recorded from the audience at the Cobo Hall in Detroit,
Michigan, on February 28th, 1974, the second of a two night stay. Yes performed the whole Close
to the Edge and Topographic Oceans that night, something that would become rather scarce soon
thereafter. This recording has always been appreciated by avid Yes fans as one of the best
performances of the Tales material, but has been marred by high hiss and noise levels. PRRP
staff have done their best to remove as much offending noise as possible so that the mastery of
this music can be more fully appreciated.

Notes from the Re-master:

Multiple sources were used to produce this show. They all originated from a single source,
namely, an audience recording made the night of the performance. The majority of the show is a
known second generation tape of the concert, with additional components merged into the base
recording from a 3rd generation tape. A patch was needed in the song The Remembering due to a
“tape flip” in the master tape during that song. This patch came from a performance in Boston
two nights earlier on 2/26/74. The second generation source had cuts in the audience applause
between some songs and actually cut some brief dialogue just before Roundabout. Patches were
used to fix these omissions.
Here’s a bit of history about the tapes of this recording used for this re-master, “The 3rd  gen.
Cassettes most likely represent all of the tape that was recorded that night, while the
confirmed 2nd  gen. was acquired on CDR and had a small amount of in-between song tape missing.
There is an AWFUL lot of Hiss and what sounds like occasional tape damage on the 2nd gen, but
the same damage is present in parts on the 3rd gen. as well. While the 2nd gen had more hiss
and noise it still seemed to be the stronger of the 2 tapes.

The way the tape was traded as a cassette was this:  Two 90min tapes.

Side A - Firebird/Sib khat/AYAI/CTTE
Side B - RSOG/Remembering
Side C - The Ancient/Ritual/applause
Side D - Roundabout

On the 3rd gen., there is quite a bit of applause NOT included on the 2nd gen. and it's most
likely that the 2nd gen. source had Roundabout put on a "used" tape {which accounts for it
sounding slightly different from the rest of the show). It was quite common when trading to
just put an 8 minute encore as clearly-labeled filler on another tape.”
Once the sources were spliced, merged and mixed together the main goal was to reduce
the “awful” amount of hiss and noise in this recording. The signal strength was strong with
good detail and viable music signal up to 10,000 Hz. An occasional tape slip or stretch occurred
and was corrected as well as possible, but still audible. Rare dropouts were short enough that
they could be masked without too much trouble. The hiss was quite disruptive in many segments of
the recording and seemed to get worse as the concert went on. There were also bursts of hiss
that would occur from time to time as if someone was interfering with a radio signal –which was
obviously not the case here since this was an audience recording. As always, a compromise needed
to be made to remove as much noise as possible without damaging the audible music. With the
noise reduced significantly, we can now hear Jon lead in the others at 19:28 of Ritual with
“one, two, ready, go”. Many other details of the music are now audible and more clearly
appreciated. The right channel amplitude was reduced 15% to compensate for an imbalance in
channel signal strength and all songs were speed corrected which helped to adjust the tempo and
tonality.

The information on the taper/gear is limited at best.  There are some funny/annoyning, depending on your point of view, comments by the taper and his friend during the show, mostly directed at Jon Anderson.
The story behind the recording that was told to me was that the taper was from Reno and he taped many shows in the Bay Area. I also have copies of his Dio Oakland 84, Iroan Maiden SF 85, and Genesis Oakland 84; they are all great recordings.

Yes’ 35th Anniversary Tour began mid April 2004 in Seattle and ended September 22nd, 2004 in Monterrey, Mexico and featured the Anderson, Squire, Howe, Wakeman, and White lineup. The tour was broken into three legs starting with a Spring North American Tour, followed by the summer tours of Europe and North America. A nice cross section of material from over the years was chosen for this tour emphasizing the current members and also featuring “Sweet Dreams” from the pre – Howe era and Paul Simon’s “America” that was only released as a single in 1972. Another track that makes its appearance in the tour is the rarely played “South Side Of The Sky”.

The recording is an excellent stereo soundboard with some traces of compression. The mix is really good with the bass slightly overshadowed by the other instruments. It amazes me after all these years these guys still sound so good. There aren’t too many aging bands that can still pull off their music at this level. Vocally, they aren’t as sharp as they used to be, understandably so, but Anderson’s voice sometimes benefits from the slight raspiness giving him an edgier sound than he’s ever had before. “South Side Of The Sky” is a good example and sounds quite good with an extended section at the end with Wakeman and Howe trading solos.

The acoustic section features a really nice “Long Distance Runaround” followed by the usual tour story by Jon Anderson of when he wrote the song in Jamaica. The band then kicks into a short reggae version where Jon sings “long distance runaround/long time, waiting to get me some ganja/I still remember the dream there/I still remember the time I got so high” and goes on about how Bush and Kerry should start smoking again and stop talking about war before referencing the Barrett Strong anti-war anthem “War”, even getting the crowd to participate in the chant. The whole acoustic set is pretty loose with lots of stories and comic moments between songs with Rick Wakeman providing lounge style piano for background music. Chris Squire get his turn at a storyteller moment where he explains how he and Alan White called on Rick Wakeman to come up with a special 35th Anniversary blues version of “Roundabout” that ends in an enthusiastic “Fucking Brilliant!” from Chris. Keeping an open mind, the acoustic versions of “Long Distance Runaround”, “Roundabout” and even “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” come across really well and is a nice twist in the set. Rick Wakeman takes an outstanding piano solo in “Owner” in place of the guitar solo. Still, songs like “Awaken” and “Starship Trooper” really steal the show for the die-hard Yes fans and are a great way to end the night.

Sirene does it again with Night Must Fall; a superb sounding set and a worthwhile performance from the definitive Yes lineup giving this title essential status. (WGPSEC)

Comments: This is the Yahoo! Live Webcast. I stayed up late on a work night to record this live (I'm on the east coast, so it started at 11:30 PM), only to find out afterward that it would be repeated over and over again the next day. Anyway, the sound is excellent. I didn't do any alterations other than raising the volume level a bit, and fades at the beginning and end of the show. Despite being very tired the next day, it was very cool watching this live and seeing how the show has progressed from the east coast shows I saw early in the tour. "South Side" and "Five Percent" are much tighter now. Other than that, it's pretty much the same strong performance I saw early in the tour.

Of course for release #200 I wanted something special so I went through the archives to find some good soundboard. The ABWH tour is still one of my favourite tours ever, although I had just seen one show in November 1989. This one comes from the earlier leg of the EU tour that took place in Northern Europe & UK. This is an amazing recording, albeit with two incomplete tracks. At one point I thought about patching the missing bits with the existing audience source from the same night but I thought I would leave it exactly as I received it.

For those who remember this tour, it was brilliant. Not only the four guys were playing extraordinarily good, but on the bass we could appreciate the great Tony Levin taking the place of Chris Squire. I wish I could see more of that. Infact, I had bought the ticket for the Modena show but that got cancelled because of Jon's voice.

OZRIC TENTACLES - Technicians Of The Sacred

Ozric Tentacles – Technicians Of The Sacred (2015)

TECHNICIANS OF THE SACRED is the first all new OZRIC TENTACLES album since 2011 s PAPER MONKEYS (and their first double album since their classic Erpland release of 1990), and comprises eleven tracks, with over ninety minutes of music. Tracks such as Switchback, Rubbing Shoulders With The Infinite and Butterfly Garden are brilliant examples of the Ozrics musical art; pulsating rhythms and blissed out tunefulness present and correct.
Their talent for hypnotic, mantra like grooves found kindred spirits in the British rave scene of the late 1980s, uniting the seemingly disparate New Age hippie and Rave audiences. Despite the lack of a hit single, media notoriety or the usual music business hype, much less major label backing, their 1993 album Jurassic Shift was a UK top twenty album, and their hardcore audience is both dedicated and loyal to the band s unique sound. At the core of the band s music is an exploration of electronic musical textures and compulsive, danceable grooves interlaced with strong melodies and multi ethnic musical references.

CHICKEN SHACK - "GOODBYE"

With a live reputation so strong, it was only a matter of time before Stan Webb’s ensemble delivered a concert recording, but when this album came out the time wasn’t right, as the band had ceased to exist and their mastermind joined competitors SAVOY BROWN. Not that his decision to thwart things is reflected in “Goodbye” that saw the guitarist surrounded with a new line-up and discarding the artful fabric of the recent "Unlucky Boy" in order to focus on the loose brilliance of standards like “Tutti Frutti” or “Everyday I Have The Blues” where the audience engages in a catchy call-and-response.

A different sort of reflection comes out of the “Poor Boy” rumble and “Thrill Is Gone” that pack desolation as tight as it gets for an axe to cry and the voice to weep. There’s anguish in the spare muscularity of “You Take Me Down” and a heavy sense of doom in “Going Down” that bulges with Rob Hull’s bass and Dave Wilkinson’s bopping piano, but then there’s panache in the improvisational vibe that surges through “Webb’s Guitar Shuffle”, a hurricane rehash of Bert Weedon’s tune, and “Webb’s Boogie” as instruments do the talking – eloquently to the hilt. As far as farewells go, this one is a brilliant bow.
