OZRIC TENTACLES - Technicians Of The Sacred
Ozric Tentacles – Technicians Of The Sacred (2015)
TECHNICIANS OF THE SACRED is the first all new OZRIC TENTACLES album since 2011 s PAPER MONKEYS (and their first double album since their classic Erpland release of 1990), and comprises eleven tracks, with over ninety minutes of music. Tracks such as Switchback, Rubbing Shoulders With The Infinite and Butterfly Garden are brilliant examples of the Ozrics musical art; pulsating rhythms and blissed out tunefulness present and correct.
Their talent for hypnotic, mantra like grooves found kindred spirits in the British rave scene of the late 1980s, uniting the seemingly disparate New Age hippie and Rave audiences. Despite the lack of a hit single, media notoriety or the usual music business hype, much less major label backing, their 1993 album Jurassic Shift was a UK top twenty album, and their hardcore audience is both dedicated and loyal to the band s unique sound. At the core of the band s music is an exploration of electronic musical textures and compulsive, danceable grooves interlaced with strong melodies and multi ethnic musical references.

CHICKEN SHACK - "GOODBYE"
With a live reputation so strong, it was only a matter of time before Stan Webb’s ensemble delivered a concert recording, but when this album came out the time wasn’t right, as the band had ceased to exist and their mastermind joined competitors SAVOY BROWN. Not that his decision to thwart things is reflected in “Goodbye” that saw the guitarist surrounded with a new line-up and discarding the artful fabric of the recent "Unlucky Boy" in order to focus on the loose brilliance of standards like “Tutti Frutti” or “Everyday I Have The Blues” where the audience engages in a catchy call-and-response.
A different sort of reflection comes out of the “Poor Boy” rumble and “Thrill Is Gone” that pack desolation as tight as it gets for an axe to cry and the voice to weep. There’s anguish in the spare muscularity of “You Take Me Down” and a heavy sense of doom in “Going Down” that bulges with Rob Hull’s bass and Dave Wilkinson’s bopping piano, but then there’s panache in the improvisational vibe that surges through “Webb’s Guitar Shuffle”, a hurricane rehash of Bert Weedon’s tune, and “Webb’s Boogie” as instruments do the talking – eloquently to the hilt. As far as farewells go, this one is a brilliant bow.

CHICKEN SHACK - UNLUCKY BOY
Chicken Shack are a British blues band, founded in the mid-1960s by Stan Webb (guitar and vocals), Andy Silvester (bass guitar), and Alan Morley (drums), who were later joined by Christine Perfect (McVie) (vocals and keyboards) in 1968. Chicken Shack has performed with various line-ups, Stan Webb being the only constant member.
Originally released in 1973, but reissued with four extra tracks as part of Sanctuary's Blues Masters series in 2003, Chicken Shack's Unlucky Boy finds guitarist/vocalist/songwriter and band founder Stan Webb in fine form. Only drummer Paul Hancox remains from the uneven Imagination Lady, and indeed the horn-oriented approach here is much different than the plodding Led Zeppelin-isms of the previous disc. Webb contributes six originals, and even though they are derivative of Savoy Brown (a band he joined for the Boogie Brothers album just a year later), his approach here is much more subtle and controlled than on his last effort. Chris Mercer's saxes, often double tracked to sound like a horn section, bring a tough R&B to the mix, and drummer Hancox is a controlled powerhouse. Webb also reigns in his impulse to overextend guitar solos so prevalent on Imagination Lady, whipping off tight, controlled leads instead. Producer Neil Slaven contributes honest, witty, and often self-deprecating liner notes that help explain why two of these songs suffer from poor mixes (basically, he had consumed various substances and couldn't salvage the songs after the fact).

Notes: outstanding audience recording (especially considering that it's
from 30 years ago) from one of the last shows of the spring '79 tour.
Many (including myself, when I first heard it) mistake it for a sound-
board or FM recording. Nice stereo sound.
From a review of this show on 'Forgotten Yesterdays':
"I remember dragging my Led Zep fiend buddy to this show. He was a skeptic.
At the end of the show he turned to me and said it was better than that
Zep show in the Kingdome, which is legendary. I wallowed in smug pride for
my favourite band."

RAINBOW - A LIGHT IN THE BLACK - 1975-1984
According to Darker Than Blue: "The first ever history of Rainbow according to the label, and a set which can’t really make it’s mind up what it wants to be. It’s got far too many alternate tracks and rough mixes to be of much interest to casual fans, so seems to be aimed at the more committed Rainbow enthusiast. It’s a difficult balance to strike, as I found out when I put that Listen Learn Read On package together for EMI some years ago and got roundly dissed in some quarters for mixing so many rarities amongst a more off the wall album track choice!
As well as regular album tracks, we have a number of ‘rarities’, and on the first few discs these comprise rough mixes of a trio of Rising tracks, live recordings from Japan (which may be from the On Stage reissue), and rehearsal versions from 1977 of Long Live Rock and Roll tracks. Early lists suggested tracks from the Don Kirshner’s show and Osaka but these have been changed for more of the Munich 77 show since then. From the Down To Earth era there is an instrumental take of one track, some live numbers from November 1979 off the King Biscuit show and Stargazer audio from Castle Donington.
The Turner period is boosted by audio of the San Antonio set from 1982 and a couple of tracks from Hammersmith in 1981. The set finishes with latter day bits and bobs including a couple of out-takes from the last album, three live cuts from Cardiff in 1983 (great to have the applause back on Stranded!) and another three from the Tokyo show in 1984 on the band’s last tour.
It’s a little difficult to be exact about which of these are new to official CD (collectors will probably have sourced many on bootleg in the past), and which are recycled from the last set of Rainbow album double remasters, and the advance information doesn’t tell us.
The set is rounded off with a DVD from the Donington Monsters of Rock event, but it is just the BBCTV edit, with all the attendant issues (starting the show with the encore, etc.). As the gig was filmed by manager Bruce Payne’s own company, you might have thought the full show could be sourced. Apparently white label double vinyl test pressings of the set were sent out, and Graham Bonnet recalls them all being invited to a screening of the film."

Remastered by Shaun Toole December 2002
Remastering notes:
The recording had numerous loud passages where the taper had not adjusted for changes in the music volume. This caused distortion on the master tape which still exists in the remaster. The taper tended to overcompensate for the high levels by turning the record level down too far, then back up to a reasonable level. These abrupt changes have been smoothed out in this remaster. Additionally, the tape ran fast and the pitch was therefore too high. This has been corrected, too, along with hiss and click reduction. Equalization was applied to remove hum and some annoying frequencies which resonated in the concert hall, and to give a more natural overall sound.

* Apparently the band's organ either broke down or did not arrived at the concert hall. Rather than stop the show for twenty minutes and wait for the instrument to arrive, Jon called for Long Distance Runaround and The Fish instead of Heart of the Sunrise - but not before he had already given his lengthy introduction to the latter.
** Jon again introduces Heart of the Sunrise, determined to play this important song from the "new album" (Fragile) in spite of the still-missing organ. Who are those additional voices? And is that a dog barking while the band tunes up? Wakeman fills with piano where we usually hear the organ in the introduction to Heart of the Sunrise.
*** The tape runs out during the middle section of Perpetual Change. The recording picks up again during the wrap-up of the song. Apparently the entire drum solo was missed by the taper. Since some type of edit would be required to put the two pieces of the song together without the middle section, I cross-faded the two fragments in a style similar to the studio version of the song, in which the two Yes bands play against each other on opposite stereo channels. http://www.filefactory.com/file/5gzwg1kldvw9/yes%20%201971-10-16%20-%20Twenty-minute%20Tap%20Dance%20-%20Newcastle.rar

"The Boston Tea-FTO Party" (get it? TFTO? clever, aren't I!)
Source: much-better alternate audience recording which surfaced in late 2003 -> Matt Putzel -> G. Pisano -> TheTooleMan -> Sound Forge and other of TheTooleMan's Toys -> Audio CD -> EAC -> FLAC
If you have JUST ONE recording of Yes in Boston on 1974-02-26, THIS AIN'T IT. You know the lyrics in "The Remembering" which say, "Alternate hue, alternate hue..." Well, this is ALTERNATE TAPE!!!
Matt Putzel unearthed this one from whomever had it buried in their treasure chest over the years. This recording has more substance than the more widely-circulated but thin-sounding version you already have.
The concert is one of the best performances of the Tales shows, and this is one of the best-sounding of all the live Tales tapes. Yes was in full swing with the Tales tracks, the concerts were going sort of like clockwork, Wakeman was drinking himself blind, the audience was yelling for Roundabout after the first song... what more can you ask for?
The band stopped playing "The Remembering" at the end of February, caving in to demands for more familiar material, so this is one of the last live performances of that track. It's also one of the best, with fewer Wakeman fuck-ups. Too bad they dropped it, since it's my favorite of the "Tales."
Mr. Putzel had patched the gaps in this recording using the more widely-circulated version. I asked for a copy of the unpatched master, but he could not provide one. (I would still like a copy of the unaltered master. I think George P. ultimately sent me a copy of Matt's remaster.) I decided I could improve the way the gaps were patched, at least to my taste, by matching the pitch and EQ of the two sources more closely. So what you have here is my remaster built upon Matt's.
This is my Thanksgiving present to all of you. It's been a shitty year for me in a lot of ways, but I am still thankful for a number of things, including the friends I have made at Dimeadozen.
Art is provided, including some big-assed TIFF files for you hi-def freaks.
