1980 World Tour
The show at The Ahoy was performed by a relatively small band by Zappa standards, and has some really good guitar solos by the master. That is evident with the concert starting off with the guitar-centric “Chunga’s Revenge.” Zappa’s solo is – using a word frequently cited to describe his playing – blistering. There is a bit of angry energy in it, and given the circumstances outlined above, I must wonder how much of that he transferred into his playing. After some brief introductions, he quickly launches into a couple songs from “Joe’s Garage,” including the dreamy guitar piece “Outside Now.” In fact, not surprisingly, the concert pulls material from several albums released at the time, including “Tinsel Town Rebellion,” to be released the following year, “Sheik Yerbouti,” and “You Are What You Is.” The performance of “City of Tiny Lights” on this boot is just OK to me, except for the guitar solo, which pulls it out of mediocrity. I don’t care much for Tommy Mars’ keyboards on this one; very uninspired. Of course, one must consider the fact that Mars is compensating for the lack of a horn section on this particular tour.
Following a perfunctory performance of “Teenage Wind,” we get the heavy, boogie-ish “Bamboozled by Love,” which had plenty of potential, but again gets marred by Mars’ keyboards. Makes me wonder why the song was included in the set because it would have sounded so much better backed by a strong horn section. Thank god for Zappa’s guitar coming in and re-inserting the heavy rock feel into this. He pulls off a bit of outside, atonal playing that grinds power into the song. Ike Willis, however, sounds a bit anemic. After “Pick Me I’m Clean” comes “Society Pages”, which quickly segues into “I’m A Beautiful Guy,” and then “Beauty Knows No Pain.” This “suite” from “You Are What You Is” is concluded with “Charlie’s Enormous Mouth.”
Zappa goes a bit retro with his next group of songs, reaching slightly into the past with “Cosmik Debris,” (which really suffers from the lack of Ruth Underwood) from “Apostrophe(‘),” but going way back to “Freak Out!” for “You Didn’t Try to Call Me” and “I Ain’t Got No Heart.” Not sure who’s playing the guitar solo on this performance of “Cosmik Debris.” It’s an excellent soaring blues interpretation of the song that lacks Zappa’s signature style, which leads me to think it was either Willis or Ray White. Disc One is completed with “Love of My Life,” from “Cruising with Ruben and the Jets.”
Disc Two returns the show to more contemporary selections from Zappa’s catalog, starting with the title track from “You Are What You Is.” There’s nothing remarkable about this performance; in fact, the musicians sound like they’re just going through the motions. Things perk up when the group launches into “Joe’s Garage.” The concert appears to end after “Why Does It Hurt When I Pee,” but an encore quickly develops with “Dancin’ Fool.” Something to note: When Zappa at the end of the show is re-introducing band members, he repeats Ray White’s name several times as though he was being introduced again and again as different individuals. Was Zappa playing with the fact that the band he was touring with was considerably smaller than what he normally travels with?
With “Dancin Fool,” the band manages to use its small size to its advantage. That song is followed by “Bobby Brown,” also from “Sheik Yerbouti.” In both songs, Zappa delivers well with his vocals. Even “Ms. Pinky” comes off well despite it’s missing the extraordinarily fuzzed and heavy guitar and bass from “Zoot Allures.” This boot also has one of the few pre-release recordings of a live performance of “I Don’t Want To Get Drafted.” The show finishes with “The Illinois Enema Bandit,” in a great performance with Ray White’s vocals and with Zappa’s guitar work. Zappa’s solo is searing in its precision. He gave the crowd at The Ahoy that night a real gift with that solo.

After Blind Faith ran out of steam, Steve Winwood reassembled Traffic. But with Dave Mason already working on his solo career, the band reconvened as a three-piece with Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood. Right after recording the fourth Traffic studio LP John Barleycorn Must Die, the band debuted the new songs on the BBC “In Concert” program hosted by John Peel.
Recorded live before an audience at the Paris Theatre in London on April 30th, several sources have been in circulation. A Westwood One “Superstars Of Rock” transcription disc has excellent sound but is missing “Stranger To Himself” and the John Peel commentary between numbers.
Another source is a BBC transcription LP containing the complete broadcast including the song and Peel’s commentary. The sound is a bit more dull than the Westwood One disc, however. The only silver disc devoted to this gig is Pop Spectacular: BBC 1970 issued several years ago from an incomplete BBC transcription disc, missing “Stranger To Himself.”
In A Field Of Their Own on Godfather is a marked improvement over the no label. It sounds much nicer and louder, but is has the complete gig.
The trio of Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood switch instruments throughout the broadcast and even features Wood playing sax as the bass line in “Medicated Goo.” They play the yet to be released new album except for ”Stranger To Himself” and the only older songs played are “No Time To Live,” “Pearly Queen” and “Medicated Goo.” DJ John Peel offers commentary between each song leading the listener through the various instrument changes and commenting on the songs they are playing.
The show beings with Peel saying, ”Of all the stories of groups breaking up constantly in the music papers it’s really nice to have one of the all time great ones get together again. And it’s even nicer to have them on this program. Traffic.”
“Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring” sounds tremendous in the recording with intricate organ lines weaving around the rhythm section. “I hope you agree with me that Traffic are playing better than ever. Very relaxed and really nice. This is from their second LP together released in 1968? Peel says before “No Time To Live.”
Before “Medicated Goo” Peel explains, “On this next number there is a certain amount of change of instrumentation. To begin with Chris will be playing the bass part on tenor saxophone as a result of electronic trickery too complex for me to explain it to you. Not that I understand it myself. Steve will be playing guitar and Steve and Jim will be singing it.”
With its uptempo beat and happy melody, it is a good change of pace from the rest of the material which is both very contemplative and serious. On “John Barleycorn” they sing the lyrics from the fifteenth century rendition of the song but they mess up the lyrics at the end with Capaldi singing the correct version while Winwood sings the last verse causing them to fall apart.
Peel introduces “Pearly Queen” as one of his favorite Traffic numbers and afterwards compliments Winwood’s guitar playing by saying, “so if you’re a guitarist and you think you gotta go on playing those same old blues riffs at ear shattering volume in order to make it, you don’t and that’s proof of it.”
Before the ending Peel remarks how great it is to see a band actually smiling as they play. Traffic close with the “Glad” and “Freedom Rider” medley. The spectacular contrast in styles in the tracks comes through clearly and Wood’s flute solo sounds tremendous against the organ.
Godfather also include several rare demo tracks from the sessions for Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys. They are in excellent sound quality and reveal the band to be very happy, laughing as they work on the new songs for what would be their most famous LP.
In A Field Of Their Own is another quality Godfather release worth having. It is a marked improvement over the past release and the packaging is really gorgeous with the barley theme and copious amounts of liner notes. http://fp.io/57efa7d3/

First of all, it's possible you may have this material already. It's been misatrributed to Minneaplis 1975-01-18 for a long time. More of this set than is on this vinyl bootleg has already seen the light of day... BUT you may not have it in this quality (amazing!). If you don't have it, this is a must-get any way as the material and performance is first-rate.
Here's a direct quote from the Zeppelin database (found at http://www.argenteumastrum.com/1973.htm):
MAY 00 - UNKNOWN LOCATION (THURSDAY)
Very possibly that this soundcheck could took place on May 4, 1973 at the Braves Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia. There was a debate judging from which period this soundcheck might be. Often attirbuted to the Minneapolis January 18, 1975, the date was discredited as well as speculated Los Angeles June 25, 1975 afternoon soundcheck. Robert Plant's voice sounds quite damaged and dry, and so on, it matches almost perfectly with first leg of 1973 North American Tour period, where his voice wasn't yet fully recovered.
This is such a nice set that it bears listening to over and over again. I have this album in current rotation myself, it's that good.

Another Night Has Gone from Godfather captures Taste’s show in Basel, Switzerland during the band’s last European Tour. This is the second incarnation of the band and consisted of Rory Gallagher on guitar, vocals, and harmonica, Richard McCracken on bass, and John Wilson on drums. It comes from a very good to near excellent soundboard recording. The performance is outstanding and the band comes out blistering right from the beginning. There is some noticeable buzzing in Rory’s guitar amp but is only evident in quieter passages and is a non issue otherwise.
The recording cuts in during the MC’s introduction just before the band start “Morning Sun”. Its tender sounding choruses are in stark contrast to the rocking verses. After a brief greeting, Rory introduces “Sugar Mama” and blasts through a few licks before being joined by the band for the heavy blues classic by Chester Burnett. This is one of a few blues covers recorded for their self titled debut album. The band is as tight and powerful as Led Zeppelin and the Jeff Beck Group were and Rory duly introduces McCracken and Wilson afterward. “I’ll Remember” has Gallagher in an extremely experimental mood during the solo in the middle (perhaps he caught a Richie Blackmore performance recently).
“Walkin’ Blues” features bottleneck slide. Rory gives a solo guitar performance accompanied only by a little footstomping and is very well received by the audience. He introduces “Eat My Words” and can be heard retuning his guitar for the track. He adds a little extra grit in his vocal for this one and continues with some more slide guitar. They hit some extreme highs and lows dynamically and Rory rips it up on harmonica and guitar simultaneously during the ten minute arrangement.
“Railway And Gun” starts off mellow but turns into a heavy 12 bar blues where Gallagher lets loose and plays some of his best soloing of the evening. “I Feel So Good” is a great driving number that breaks down during the solo, Rory has some fun playing and singing in unison ala George Benson style. This also highlights the talents of Richard McCracken and John Wilson with short solos of their own before they all come back in strong again. “What’s Going On” continues with more light and shade dynamics and shows the substance a busy rhythm section needed for this type of power trio.
“Catfish” is introduced as the last song and the band play a sludgy slower blues with enormous attitude. This traditional blues can be traced to Robert Petway, Muddy Waters, and later covered by Hendrix too. Muddy Waters is most likely Gallagher’s influence here as he references “Rollin’ Stone” and later gets into “I Just Want To Make Love To You” also recorded by Muddy (but written by Willie Dixon). The guys are really feeding off of each other during this show stopper and McCracken and Gallagher get into some impressive call and answer. The track still reaches 12 minutes even though there is a small cut at 5:02.
They return to the stage for a nice funky “Same Old Story”. The three minute encore is no way satisfying enough for this crowd. They bring the band back for a second time for a walk through “Pontiac Blues”.
Godfather’s packaging for Another Night Has Gone employs their usual tri-fold cardboard sleeve with some nice live shots of the band and a short essay pertaining to this particular lineup inside. This is another great Godfather title featuring a band that gets very little attention in this market. http://fp.io/582mfe38/
