NINE BELOW ZERO - Village 1 Mars 2003

Nine Below Zero - Village 1 Mars 2003
Nine Below Zero on Soundaboard, a very welcome share by Rippin Frog.

In 1979 while playing at The Thomas A'Beckett pub in the Old Kent Road they accepted an offer from former musician Mickey Modern to manage them, and it was he who persuaded them to change the band's name to something sharper. Greaves chose Nine Below Zero after the Sonny Boy Williamson II penned song
At that time Modern was a musician signed to A&M Records, after producing the band's demos he persuaded A&M to give him a record label with which to launch this band's career. Modern named the label M&L Records.
Under Modern's creative direction and production, the band went full-time, and in 1980 released their first album, Live At The Marquee, which was recorded on 16 June 1980. Bradley on drums was replaced by Stix Burkey. By the end of that year they were one of the most popular club attractions in London, pulling in audiences from other genres, particularly the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, attracted by their high-energy fast tempo sound. They headlined at the Hammersmith Odeon and featured respected bluesman Alexis Korner, a long-time champion of new electric blues talent.
Nine Below Zero kick off 2014 their 35th year  with a tour small tour with Ben Waters playing piano with the band. The set they play with Ben is different, with more songs from the Hats Off project they made together.
After the tour with Ben they join The Stranglers as special guests for a six week tour of the UK. Later in the year to help promote the re-release of Don't Point Your Finger and Third Degree on Universal Records they are putting the classic line up together for a one off tour of the UK. The usual sprinkling of festivals in the summer will be the icing on the cake of what will be a  very special anniversary year for Nine Below Zero.

STEVE MARTIN and the STEEP CANYON RANGERS featuring Edie Brickell – Live

Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers featuring Edie Brickell – Live (2014)

LiveIn the early ’80s, Steve Martin gave up a wildly successful career as a standup comic to focus on acting, becoming a bankable film star, and enjoying rewarding sidelines as an author and playwright. But decades later, Martin took a route back to live performing by turning to his skills as a banjo player — he’d long used the banjo as part of his stage act, and his final comedy LP, 1981's The Steve Martin Brothers, featured one side of jokes and another of bluegrass-influenced instrumentals. In 2009, Martin released an all-music album called The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo, and he was soon touring regularly in tandem with the progressive bluegrass band the Steep Canyon Rangers. Four years into their collaboration, Martin and the Rangers have become a strong live act
who don’t have to rely on his gags to please a crowd (though the gags are certainly welcome), as evidenced by this album, taken from a show recorded for broadcast on PBS. Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers featuring Edie Brickell Live absolutely lives up to its title, with Martin and the band joined on several numbers by singer/songwriter Brickell, who collaborated with Martin on the 2013 album Love Has Come for You. While Martin is funny, he’s not a great vocalist, so Brickell brings a strong set of pipes, some fine lyrics, and a warm stage presence to this show, and given her wildly uneven body of work since scoring a hit in 1988 with “What I Am,” her work with Martin ranks with the best music she’s made since her debut. The Steep Canyon Rangers are in superb form here, filling out the tunes with expert playing and richly imaginative arrangements. For the most part, Martin is content to play the banjo in this concert, and if he’s something short of a virtuoso, he’s certainly talented and possesses a strong melodic sense, which he displays on original compositions like “Daddy Played the Banjo” and “The Crow.” And to no one’s surprise, when Martin does go for a laugh, it works, especially on the a cappella number “Atheists Don’t Have No Songs,” as well as the witty but mordant “Pretty Little One,” which shifts gears midway from a love song to a murder ballad. Martin is hardly the first actor of note to take a flier at music, but his 21st century albums have proved he’s no dilettante, and Live confirms he can go on-stage without a net and emerge with flying colors; if he wanted to keep doing this instead of another Pink Panther sequel, most fans would probably consider it time better spent.

London blues rock band Nine Below Zero have toured with the Who and The Kinks, cited as influences for some of today’s new bands and still have a devotional live following (soon to be drawn on again as support for the Stranglers tour which has just kicked off). So hot on the heels of last year’s  remastered live album At the Marquee comes a double re-release of Nine Below Zeros first two studio albums “Don’t Point Your Finger” and “Third Degree”.  Both albums have been remastered and come packaged with some interesting bonus material, so an ideal time to revisit these recordings some 30 something years on.

First up is “Don’t Point Your Finger” originally released in 1981 and produced by Stones, Zeppelin and Who producer Glyn Johns. More a consistently blues rock album than the second studio album the remastered version sounds great with the guitars and vocals of Dennis Greaves sounding multi – layered against Peter Clarks  driving bass.  It’s also a consistently good blues album. “One Way Street” is vibrant opener followed by the rolling blues and  guitars of “Doghouse”. “Liquor Lover” has the pounding beat and breathless delivery of a great live drinking song, whilst the cool bass and 60’s pop beat  “Treat Her Right” wouldn’t sound out of place in a Tarantino dance scene. A slightly redundant cover of Rockin’ Robin is the only real weakness on what is otherwise an extremely worthwhile addition to any record collection. The album also includes a live concert from Radio 1 at recorded at The Granary in Bristol in 1981.

“The Third Degree” is a bit more of a diverse offering. Released one year later there is much more of a nod towards the mod revivalist label attached at the time. Fans of The Jam will enjoy lead single “11+11”, “You Can’t Say Yes and You Can’t Say No” and the Start echoing “Wipe Away Your Kiss”. There is also further diversion from the earlier blues sound with the more electronic sweeps of “Mystery Man” and the ska infused “East Street SE17” whilst “Why Can’t We Be What We Want To Be” sits nicely in the new wave sound of the early 80’s. Interestingly the album was originally produced again by Glyn John but was rejected by A&M and then fully re-recorded and released after switching production to Simon Boswell. Both versions of the album are included in this release and there are pros and cons to both versions – “11+11” sounding a little more immediate under Johns' production and “Egg on my Face” better still. Balanced against the more polished production of Boswell it’s one to debate for the listener. (JG)                  http://fp.io/77829e55/

BETH HART, JOE BONAMASSA - LIVE IN AMSTERDAM

The collaboration between soulful singer Beth Hart and popular blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa has been both critically-acclaimed and commercially successful. While their 2011 album Don't Explain laid a foundation and flitted on and off the blues chart for a couple years, their 2013 album Seesaw earned the pair a Grammy® nomination and still sits in the Top Ten. So, what do Beth and Joe do for an encore?

How about a live album? Better yet, a live album and a live DVD! No one has ever accused Joey Bones of not delivering for his fans, and on March 25, 2014 his J&R Adventures label will release the dynamic duo's Live In Amsterdam in three different formats. A live concert documentary featuring 22 songs, including such fan favorites from the two albums like "Sinner's Prayer," Etta James' classic "I'd Rather Go Blind," "Strange Fruit," "Nutbush City Limits," and the title track from Seesaw.

Against the backdrop of the beautiful, historic Koninklijk Theater Carre in Amsterdam, the performance wows with scorching soul covers from the duo's 2011 debut album Don't Explain and 2013 follow-up Seesaw, originally made famous by artists such as Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Tom Waits, Ray Charles, Donnie Hathaway, Lucinda Williams, Bill Withers, Delaney & Bonnie, Buddy Miles, Tina Turner, Slackwax, Melody Gardot, Nina Simone, and more.

This project was born from what Hart, Bonamassa, and Bonamassa's long-time producer Kevin Shirley call a "crazy idea" to record a catalog of songs in a way that recalls the days when a band recorded live in the studio with little or no overdubs; the days when the vocalist was happy when a take was done regardless of personal performance.

"What we're trying to capture is an era of reaction and spontaneity – something that was a great inspiration for me as a budding musician," explained Bonamassa. "It's a bygone era in lieu of modern times and digital studio manipulation. We wanted to do the exact opposite of that for this live concert. There were no nets and what you hear is what was sung and played that night."

The Cafe Au Go Go show also included Paul Butterfield, Elvin Bishop, Harvey Brooks, Buddy Miles, Herbie
Rich, James Tatum and Philip Wilson. The Generation Club show also included B.B. King, Elvin Bishop, Buzzy Feiten, Al Kooper, and Philip Wilson.

I grabbed this gem at a shop in New York City back in the mid 90's with my best friend,
'Rich G'. Tracks 1-6 were recorded live at the Cafe Au Go Go on March 17th 1968, 152
Bleeker Street, Greenwich Village, New York City. Track 7 was recorded live at The
Generation Club on April 15th 1968, 52 West 8th Street, New York City. The Cafe Au Go Go
show also included Paul Butterfield, Elvin Bishop, Harvey Brooks, Buddy Miles, Herbie
Rich, James Tatum, and Philip Wilson. The Generation Club also included B.B. King, Elvin
Bishop, Buzzy Feiten, Al Kooper, and Philip Wilson.

If you're not familiar with this recording, it can best be described as a bunch of
structured 'jams'.  If you're into lyrics, this one's NOT for you!!!  If you're into great
instrumentals, particularly electric guitar, JUMP ON THIS!!  The sound quality is very nice.
I'd rate the SQ as a solid EX, in my humble opinion.  Crowd noise can be heard at times, but
it's faint at most.  There are also a few fade-in/fade-outs, but almost hardly worth mentioning.

This is definitely one of the better sounding live performances with Jimi Hendrix I've heard.

Lastly- I normally wouldn't include a scan of the actual disc, but this one's too cool looking
to omit.  Hope you guys agree.  Thanks again to 'Alex D.' for the artwork scans.

Crimson ProjeKCtThe Crimson ProjeKCt, the King Crimson offshoot featuring 3 current members of that historic band, released Live in Tokyo through InsideOutMusic on the 3rd March 2014. The band had this to say about the release: “Performances of classic KC pieces were recorded at Club Citta’ in Tokyo in March 2013 and represent the sonic power of this unique band. They were meticulously mixed and mastered in pristine sound quality by TCP guitarist Markus Reuter and his ‘Unsung Productions’ team.”
Featuring the talents of Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Markus Reuter, Julie Slick and Tobias Ralph; The Crimson ProjeKCt primarily focus on repertoire from the early 1980s through to the mid-90s. The band has a “double trio” line-up, as made popular by Crimson between 1994 – 1997.
