Drive-By Truckers – English Oceans (2014)
Drive-By TruckersOn March 4th, Drive-By Truckers return with their brand new album, English Oceans. The follow-up to 2011's Go-Go Boots was recorded with longtime producer David Barbe at Chase Park Studios in Athens, Georgia. According to the band, the 13-track effort is a return to form, reminiscent of their 1999 live album, Alabama Ass Whuppin’.
“I had forgotten what a punk-rock outfit that shit was,” co-frontman Mike Cooley told Rolling Stone. “The new record has kind of gone back to that simple sound. It sounds like a smaller band again.”
English Oceans also marks the first Truckers album where both Cooley and co-singer Patterson Hood shared the songwriting duties evenly. Together, they covered a range of topics, including “scathing take-downs of right-wing demagogues (“Made Up English Oceans,” “The Part of Him”), tender tales of mental breakdown (“When Walter Went Crazy”) and bittersweet celebrations of lost friends and life on the road (“Grand Canyon”).”

ZEPHYR - "LIVE" - MAY 02, 1973
For some time now, one of THE Holy Grails for Zephyr and Tommy Bolin fanatics has been Zephyr Live at Art’s Bar and Grill. It has been said of Zephyr, as with the Dead, and the Allman Bros, that their studio albums were nothing compared to their live sound. While this is a credible claim, the band broke up long before many fans had a chance to see or hear them live. Mike Drumm correctly compares Bolin in Zephyr to Clapton in Cream. In each case the guitarist would move on from that seminal band to a variety of other projects, but many fans would continue to regard the young, hot years as his finest. Till now, Zephyrs recorded legacy consisted solely of their two studio albums, 1969’s Zephyr, and 1971’s Going Back to Colorado.
The only other recording of the band I had heard of was a very poor bootleg of the Art’s Bar and Grill show. The small venue must have been just the place to catch the briefly re-united Zephyr, a band whose members had effortlessly mixed blues, jazz, and psychedelic rock. The environment created by the very talented line-up had everything to do with enabling Tommy to test the creative waters, and experiment heavily with his playing and effects. Teamed with the powerful bluesy wail and harmonica of Candy Givens, the propulsive bass playing of husband David Givens, the hard driving drumming of Bobby Berge, and the outside atmospheric organ sounds and saxophone of the gifted John Faris, the result was a legendary bridge between the classic San Francisco bands of the late sixties, and their lesser known Texas psychedelic counterparts. All unleashed on America with jaw dropping displays of chops and soul. Now, with the Tommy Bolin Archives’ Bob Ferbrache’s usual great job of re-mastering the tape which was provided by David Givens, this great performance is available for all to marvel at. This long awaited Zephyr live disc is your front row ticket to an evening with Boulder Colorado’s all time finest jam masters.
The set kicks off with the apply named Just Warming Up, a bluesy B Bish shuffle, with some great harp playing courtesy of Candy Givens, and a nice thick Bolin slide solo. A solid vamp to warm the crowd and the band for Cross The River, from Zephyr’s eponymous first album. Riffing hard blues throb like turbocharged Canned Heat into a Allmansy funk-jazzy jam. Tommy’s triplet-laden solo mixes in some nice space-ray Echoplex effects. The crowd gets its first taste of Candy’s gutsy singing, and clearly approves! John Faris unleashes his B-3 over David Givens’ flowing bass lines. Effortless shifts in tempo and volume reveal the band’s mastery of dynamics.
Boom-Ba-Boom/Somebody Listen follows, also from the Zephyr album. Put on the headphones and listen to what any of the instruments does on this one; each member of Zephyr displays intimate knowledge of their craft, as the song goes “out there” and back! A beautiful echo-laden cozmic intro by Tommy moves into a dramatic organ powered Since I’ve Been Lovin You minor key blues. Candy’s haunting harmonica solo makes time stand still before she steps to the microphone to wrap her throaty vocals around the tune. Faris gets to elaborate on the keyboards until a SICK guitar solo erupts with nods to Page, although it’s all Tommy. A show stopper.
Huna Buna is a fun stop-n-start blues shuffle that shows Zephyr just having a blast! Jazzy chording supports Faris’ and Givens’ respective keyboard and harmonica excursions on this tasty mover from the first album. This short number is an appetizer for a monumental version of The Creator Has A Master Plan. Faris opens lenghtily with soulful horn sounds over Tommy’s percussive wah-wah wakka wakka, into free-jazz exposition. David Givens says that John Faris was the band’s mentor in exploring unknown realms, and here the band prove themselves to be adept students! This Pharoah Sanders song of faith has Bolin’s well-planned thematic lines follow the vocal and crack the sky wide open. Slide effects and a nice tremelo-picking aftermath return to vocals, then more sound-effect-laden jamming - this song travels to many places! An expansively open lysergic feel says all is possible.
Sail On is a sunny, majestic number that begins with a surging, epic sound, and then in true Zephyr fashion veers into sonic mayhem. A guitar break moves into an organ solo over a one-chord rhythm riff, with blues-rocking guitar taking over, and well, too, before heading back into a slower section with a sweet San Fran-ish sound, into a bolero, which eventually builds into a rave-up, into a series of taut surf-rock drum breaks. Are you exhausted yet? Relief is provided by Crazy ’Bout You Baby. The sweet slide-and-harp blues intro is the real deal, drifting lazily, goin’ back to Chicago! Candy Givens puts loads of sultriness and sass into the delivery.
Does Zephyr cut Ten Years After on Going Home? You decide. Unlike Alvin Lee’s Wooodstock workout, this version features real band interaction, with ear loads of harp soloing over jazzier chording than Lee offered. Everyone steps out; a sweet tasting guitar solo; harmonica fills between verses; an organ solo; a harp solo; and yet another guitar solo ripe with repeated triplets and speed to burn!! David Givens’ bass lines walk like mad. There’s great interplay with the drums, which accent the wild bends, Bobby Berge generally swinging like mad. A nice ’50’s rock riff gets tossed in for good measure, if only because the kitchen sink was unavailable.
The encore of the disc is Hard Chargin’ Woman, starting in a slow, sludgy EVIL intro with bass and keyboard explosions and Candy’s sinister lyrics. This moodpiece lets Tommy wail over the top and maul his guitar, climaxing in an Echoplex discharge into a sweet unaccompanied guitar spectacle which mxes fast fingers with effects to blow your skull sideways and back. Bolin offers blues shuffle soloing that returns to earth before going off into outer space sounds, again grounding itself in Givens’ husky singing. A ghostly Faris organ solo takes the jam back into the evil beginning drones — Tommy tossing sci-fi in between eerie vocals and sledgehammer riffs. Zephyr finally throw themselves into bringing the song to a close with heavy pounding drum thunder and Tommy’s shredding not letting up until the very end.

BIOGRAPHY
by Greg Prato
It's hard to listen to the music of Tommy Bolin and not wonder what could've been if the exceptionally talented (and versatile) guitarist hadn't succumbed to a senseless drug overdose at the age of 25 -- just as his career appeared to be taking off. In a recording career that lasted only several years, Bolin not only touched upon several styles (blues-rock, ballads, fusion, funk, reggae, and heavy metal), but showed that he could master each one -- as evidenced by his two solo albums and various recordings with the likes of Zephyr, Billy Cobham, Alphonse Mouzon, the James Gang, Deep Purple, and Moxy. Born in Sioux City, IA, on August 1, 1951, Bolin tried the drums and piano as a youngster, but by the age of 13 began playing the guitar. It wasn't long before he was jamming with local rock outfits, and three years later he was expelled from school for refusing to cut his long hair. Undeterred, Bolin relocated to Denver, CO, where he formed his first real band, American Standard. By the end of the '60s, Bolin found himself in the blues-rock outfit Zephyr, led by Candy Givens.
Despite high hopes, the group was never able to translate their local success from coast to coast (despite Bolin's talents supposedly grabbing the attention of guitarists whom Zephyr opened up for -- including Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page). After a pair of albums that failed to attract a large audience, 1969's self-titled debut and 1971's Going Back to Colorado, Bolin left Zephyr. Interested in the burgeoning jazz fusion scene (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Miles Davis, etc.), Bolin formed a similarly styled outfit, Energy. But apart from live shows and demos, Energy failed to secure a recording contract. Word on Bolin's guitar ability was beginning to spread amongst musicians, however, and Mahavishnu drummer Billy Cobham invited the young guitarist to play on his solo debut, Spectrum. Issued in 1973, the album became an instant fusion classic, as Bolin's fiery guitar work lit up such tracks as the over-the-top "Quadrant Four," "Stratus," and "Red Baron." Spectrum also proved to be an important stepping stone for other guitarists (allegedly, it inspired Jeff Beck to issue such similarly styled albums as Blow by Blow and Wired), and for Bolin's career as well, as he would land gigs with such renowned hard rock acts as the James Gang and Deep Purple solely on the strength of his playing on the album.
Bolin was hired by the James Gang to get their career back on track; after founding guitarist Joe Walsh had left the group in 1971, the remaining members had seen their fortunes slowly fade. And while Bolin's arrival didn't return the group back to the top of the charts, a pair of quite underrated albums were issued, 1973's Bang and 1974's Miami, as the guitarist also sang lead for the first time on record. It was also around this time that Bolin adopted a flashy image on-stage -- complete with feather outfits, nail polish, and multi-colored hair. Shortly after the release of his second album with the James Gang, Bolin left the band, as he'd grown discontent with their musical direction. Relocating to Los Angeles, CA, Bolin supplied guitar to another fine fusion release, Mind Transplant by ex-Weather Report drummer Alphonse Mouzon. It was also around this time that Bolin secured a solo recording contract, but a phone call from Deep Purple was just around the corner.
With the departure of Ritchie Blackmore in 1974, Deep Purple suddenly found themselves without a guitarist. When the group's singer, David Coverdale, remembered hearing impressive guitar work on the Spectrum album, Bolin was tracked down, offered a tryout, and landed the gig with Purple immediately. As a result, Bolin was often doing double-duty in recording studios -- working on both his solo debut (Teaser) in Los Angeles and his Purple debut (Come Taste the Band) in Germany. Both recordings were issued in 1975, but like the James Gang gig beforehand, Bolin's tenure with Purple was short-lived, as they split up a year later.
It was no secret amongst his friends and fellow musicians that Bolin had developed a dangerous addiction to hard drugs throughout the early to mid-'70s, which only worsened by 1976 (so much so that some wondered if he had a death wish). Bolin continued working at a breakneck pace, however, issuing his second solo outing, Private Eyes, and also guesting on the self-titled debut by Canadian Led Zeppelin clones Moxy. Sadly, Bolin was found dead from a heroin overdose on December 4, 1976, in Miami, FL (the day after opening a show for Jeff Beck), at the age of 25.
In the years following his death, musicians continued to name-check Bolin as an influence, while a career-spanning box set saw the light of day in 1989, The Ultimate, and seven years later, a collection of rarities/outtakes, From the Archives, Vol. 1. Bolin's brother, Johnnie Bolin, began issuing a steady stream of archival releases, via the Tommy Bolin Archives Inc. label, and launched an official website in his brother's memory, www.tbolin.com. The '90s also saw the emergence of annual Tommy Bolin tribute concerts -- featuring performances of musicians who played alongside the late guitarist 20 years earlier, as well as such classic rock acts as Black Oak Arkansas. 2008 was a busy year for new Bolin-related releases, as Friday Music issued an exhaustive three-disc set of rarities, The Ultimate: Redux, Dean Guitars issued a Tommy Bolin Teaser Tribute Guitar, and a book was released that chronicled Tommy's entire life, Touched by Magic: The Tommy Bolin Story.

BIOGRAPHY
THE BREAKFAST is ready to be served if your appetite calls for some of the finest progressive funk rock on the scene today! With the addition of Matt Oestreicher on keyboards THE BREAKFAST is looking to wake the world with its sound. Their latest album Moxie Epoxy released in November 2006 is a testament to the style and energy of these souls from New Haven, CT. Moxie Epoxy recorded in Wilmington, VT and at Horizon Studios in West Haven, CT features the brilliant musicianship and raw talent of guitarist Tim Palmieri, bassist Ron Spears, drummer Adrian Tramontano and former keyboard player Jordan Giangreco. This is THE BREAKFAST's second release for HMG Recordings and their fifth overall.
In 2003/2004 THE BREAKFAST accepted their 1st Jammy award for best emerging artist at The Madison Square Garden Theater aong with Phil Lesh, Umphrey's Mcgee, Dr John and other distinguished honorees. Since their Jammy win THE BREAKFAST have been traveling the country. Currently you can catch them on the road supporting their last release, Moxie Epoxy.
THE BREAKFAST's national tour and non-stop schedule have seen them support the likes of The Wailers, Moe, North Mississippi All-Stars, Gomez, and others. In addition to their "road warrior" status THE BREAKFAST have played the 10,000 Lakes Festival in Minnesota twice, featuring other bands like Widespread Panic, Trey Anastasio, The Black Crowes and many more. Summer Festivals like moe.down, Gathering of the Vibes, Camp Bisco, High Sierra, and other notable events have also invited THE BREAKFAST to share their sound. After celebrating 1000 shows and eight years on the road, Keyboardist Jordan Giangreco left and the band continued on as a power trio with guitarist Tim Palmieri pulling double duty on guitar and keys (not that you'd know it). Today THE BREAKFAST has rounded out its sound with virtuoso Matt Oestreicher on keyboards. Together they rage forward with renewed mission and commitment. Tighter, funkier, and more versatile than ever before THE BREAKFAST are turning heads with each show.
The first two years as a band were spent honing THE BREAKFAST sound -- an aural cornucopia that combines the best elements of the artists the band members most admire and now a new sound has emerged. One that blends complexity with taste, one that brings back Rock'n Roll improvisation of rule breaking, no guts no glory, and spirituality of youth and rebellion. No holds barred in delivery or diversity fans are to expect something different every show and will not be disappointed. THE BREAKFAST give one hundred and ten percent every night they play.
Moxie Epoxy is the bands best recording effort to date. It captures everything the band does live and also has studio moments showing the growth of their craft. Impeccable drumming from Adrian Tramontano in tone and rhythm all over the record combined with Ron Spear's driving bass lines is already a rhythm section from heaven. Mix that with Tim Palmieri's genius on guitar musically the album melts minds. Lyrically the band has been known for being fun and wacky but this record shows the band maturing and discussing deeper issues. Life, choices, anger, love, and heartbreak are themes being touched with Moxie Epoxy. All being self-taught musicians and vocalists this album marks a new chapter in the development of their career and fans all across the country agree. Moxie Epoxy is an album not to be ignored.
THE BREAKFAST have appeared at festivals and stages with the likes of Moe., Umprey's McGee, The Disco Biscuits, Soulive, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Dark Star Orchestra, funk legend Bernie Worrell, Robbie Kreiger of the Doors, and The Wailers to name but a few. At every stop, music fans -- Baby Boomers and Gen-Xers alike -- have found THE BREAKFAST to be a group like none they have ever heard. The band's ability to mix up a wealth of styles and feed of their influences, combined with the pure talent and raw energy put out at every show make THE BREAKFAST a band not to be missed.

Russian Beatles fan site Beatles.ru ran a poll in November [2011] to find out which song fans would like McCartney to perform in Moscow… The winner, by a wide margin, was Monkberry Moon Delight from 1971's Ram album, followed by Hope Of Deliverance, Once Upon A Long Ago, Lovely Rita and Your Mother Should Know (some very oddball choices). Unfortunately their choices were ignored and none of those tunes made it into the setlist.
The set is similar to the London show except he opened with Magical Mystery Tour instead of Hello Goodbye. Other differences are Got To Get You Into My Life instead of Drive My Car, I’m Looking Through You instead of I’ve Just Seen A Face, and And I Love Her instead of I Will in the acoustic interlude.
