"July, 1977" compilation - VOL 2
Santa Cruz, California, USA
EX soundboard! - Previously uncirculated!
This just came my way from a friend who I recently met here in Santa Cruz. It came from outside of the "tape collecting world" from cassettes squirreled away many years ago and were just transferred to share for the first time. The other three members besides Neil Young were associated with Moby Grape and this band only did perhaps 20 shows or so at most, and all in the Santa Cruz area. No soundboard recordings of live shows have circulated til now and nothing has ever been released in any form by this band. I transferred two 90 minute compilations of live tracks that were not well labeled but they are from more than one night with the likely venues being The Catalyst and The Crossroads. (This torrent is from two 46 minute cassettes and was labeled as being from July, 1977 but some of it actually may be from August, 1977.)

THE GRATEFUL DEAD - Sunshine Daydream
Grateful Dead – Sunshine Daydream (2013)
Sunshine Daydream On August 27, 1972, fresh off their now-legendary European tour, the Grateful Dead traveled to Veneta, Oregon and reunited with the Merry Pranksters to throw a benefit concert for the Kesey family’s Springfield Creamery. The show, which was recorded and filmed but never released, has since become the most-requested live show in Grateful Dead history.
The concert – which is considered to be the Merry Pranksters’ last “Acid Test” – offers a snapshot of the band at the peak of its playing prowess and features the classic lineup of: Jerry Garcia, Donna Jean Godchaux, Keith Godchaux, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir. The setlist that day included memorable performance of “Sugaree,” “Deal,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Bird Song” and a mind-melting version of “Dark Star” that stretches over 30 minutes. 3 CD/1 DVD Concert film painstakingly restored with all-new stereo and 5.1 audio mixes done by Jeffrey Norman and mastered by Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser. Entire concert mixed and mastered to HDCD from the original 16-track tapes. Producer’s note by David Lemieux. Package features original tie-dye by Courtenay Pollock and brand new cover art by Grammy-winning artist Steve Vance.

Comments:
An excellent recording in need of a little speed correction and editting. Speed
corrected using Audacity 1.2.3, removed SBEs, and FLAC'd. Then all WAV files run through
Sound Forge 8.0, manually removed lots of pops/digiclicks, smoothed over some rough areas,
smoothed transitions between songs, recut a couple songs for better playability, switched
last two songs for show accuracy, cleared out SBEs in new files, and redid artwork to reflect
new setlist. This isnt perfect, but a majority of the distracting pops and clicks were removed.
No equalization or normalization was done to this show.
More notes...
-- This would have come out alot better if I had a "Sit Down" filter for Sound Forge. I swear
people were yelling this thru the first two-thirds of the show.
-- I split the announcements off the end of Pigs-3DO. Seemed like they would be more appropriate
as a separate track than added to the end of the song. Track transitions that couldnt be done
fairly evenly due to poor levels between tracks or other issues were done with short fades. I
tried to avoid having tracks sounding like they were poorly patched together.
-- Some songs had some weird level issues in them. I didnt mess with this or apply eq to them.
I wanted to preserve the songs as much as possible and I wouldnt have had much luck with some
of the areas.
-- There are ALOT [and I mean ALOT] of tiny clicks throughout this show. It would have destroyed
it to remove them all. I attacked them fairly aggressively when I started, but started ignoring
them as I went along. The pops and cracks [and a few booms] were what I concentrated on since these
really detracted from the listening experience.
-- I didnt spend too much time messing with the announcement tracks. Since it was essentially
talking, I didnt worry too much about them.
-- Somewhere around 10:00-10:30 into Money, things got pretty ugly for the recording...not sure
what the deal was...a huge stream of pops, clicks, and noise. I trimmed down most of it, but dont expect
too much of an improvement. I also removed the taper's commentary at the end and terminated with
a 2 sec fadeout because...
-- Us and Them also seems to be suffering from possible taper hardware issues. Most of the instrumental
intro is missing and was replaced by a screech. Removed screech, added 2 sec fadein, and left
some crowd noise at the beginning so you dont miss anymore of the beginning of the song.
-- Keep in mind this recording was far from perfect audio when I started. Some imperfections simply
made it worse when I edited them, so they were left alone. In cases where pops were in a rapid sequence,
I trimmed them down, but removal would have left "skips" in the flow of the song, so they werent
completely removed. Please dont approach this expecting a pristine remaster, because thats not what
this is. I probably could have spent months on this, but I doubt I have the mental strength to deal
with the "Sit Down" crowd for that long. There is always room for another tweak here and there, but
I think this is good enough at this point.
Thanks to pinkfloyd77 for providing the previous version of this show to the masses. Very much
appreciated!

MOON TAXI – Mountains Beaches Cities
Moon Taxi – Mountains Beaches Cities (2013)
Moon TaxiNashville’s best kept secret is out. Since the release of Cabaret in early 2012, Moon Taxi have been on a steady climb away from the jam rock sound they built their reputation on, veering toward more radio-friendly, song-oriented material.
For a record named Mountains Beaches Cities, Moon Taxi’s latest effort is surprisingly inorganic, but don’t go calling them Kings of Leon just yet. The quintet returns with a solid follow up that showcases the band’s ability to experiment sonically without sacrificing content (the 10 tracks clock in at just over 47 minutes). Even if it is pop music, Moon Taxi isn’t afraid to get trippy, and all the production in the world can’t mask the band’s earnest work ethic and hefty ambition. Despite the facelift, all the things that brought the band success are still intact, proving Moon Taxi is not only ready for the radio, they’re downright suited for it.

CPR released as their second record an equally excellent two-CD live concert recorded in November 1998 at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theatre. In his liner notes, Samson Records owner Norman Waitt, Jr. refers to the palpable joy that emanated from the stage that night, and most of that joy translates to this almost celebratory-like recording as well. David Crosby is in excellent voice here, perhaps the best he had sounded since his '60s and '70s heyday; still choirboy sweet, but not without the world-weariness that comes with the rocky life he had lived up to that point. Some of the magic trippiness of bygone days is missing, but the melodic complexity of the band's compositions makes that excusable, as does their gorgeous harmonies and playing capabilities. Crosby's son, keyboardist/vocalist James Raymond, has a voice strikingly similar to his father's, and his song "One for Every Moment" is a highlight of the first CD. The disc is wholly stellar, though, mostly featuring strong versions of songs off the band's debut album. They don't deviate a great deal from the studio versions, but songs such as "Little Blind Fish" and the Stephen Stills-like rocker "It's All Coming Back" take on a certain immediacy in the live setting. There is some truly excellent guitar work throughout the album by third member Jeff Pevar, particularly his intricate acoustic picking on his own "Little Blind Fish," and on the long instrumental sections of Crosby's "Déjà Vu." Some of the covers of old CSNY and Byrds material that fill that disc are a bit more problematic. CPR's renditions are always expertly played, but they range from sensational, at best, to troublesome. It's not that "Eight Miles High" is necessarily an untouchable landmark, it's that live CPR are a precise, sophisticated, workmanlike band -- far closer to Steely Dan than the Byrds -- and they cannot capture the kaleidoscopic cast or ragged spontaneity that has made the song such a brilliant pop anthem. Similarly, they polish the subversive hippie edge off "Long Time Gone." On the other hand, they give "Ohio" a scintillating go, losing some of the tribal, anthemic power that it had in 1970 but ably maintaining its intensity. The nicest surprise of the second disc, however, is an entirely new Crosby composition, "Dream for Him," written for new son Django (and recorded the next year on the third CSNY studio album Looking Forward). On it, Crosby seems shaken by uncertainty, and yet the song retains all the underlying idealism his music has always had. Just as that song does on fatherhood, Live at the Wiltern pulls the curtain back on a truly superior band. ~ Stanton Swihart David Crosby + son Live 99 , Guests Include : Phil Collins , Graham Nash & Marc Cohn !
