Notes:
For the 15th volume of Porch Songs, we head to the deep South and pay an overdue visit to Mississippi...and to 1995. In the early days around these parts, Widespread Panic was always dirty and the crowd was always rowdy. Tad Smith holds about 9,000, but most of the places they used to play in Oxford were waaaay smaller...even setting up in The Grove back in 1990. The band routinely made a stop in Oxford from 89-92 and then played there for the last time this night in 1995; a year that seemed to help musically bridge the band from its earlier years to 1996 and beyond...but of course it did.

REVIEW
by Chris Nickson
Put the CD on, and it's not so much a sound heard once more as one that's completely reborn. In this case, that's the sound of the Gram Parsons-era Byrds. There's a fire, and sometimes frivolity in what Railroad Earth does that evokes more than the spirit, but without ever sounding like copyists; it's as if they've arrived at the same destination all by themselves, penning some glorious songs along the way, like the up-tempo "Drag Him Down," the spiritual quest of "Like a Buddha," and the fairly epic "Walk On By." But there's more going on, as you discover when you listen, with kalimba and clarinet in there somewhere, adding extra textures to the music. What they come up with can only be described as country-rock -- alt-country may be the moniker of choice these days, but the band's sound is more timeless, while at the same time utterly unique -- just cop the intro to "Like a Buddha," for example. Poppy enough to hold memorable choruses over rippling mandolins ("Mighty River"), and unafraid to make a small nod to Celtic territory ("Lois Ann"), it's a work of not only rare charm, but ageless beauty.
BIOGRAPHY
by Robert Hicks
Railroad Earth emerged from the breakup of one of New Jersey's most popular bands, From Good Homes, in early 2001. Later that year, with appearances at some of the major summer festivals on the bluegrass circuit under their belt -- including the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, and High Sierra Music Festival -- Railroad Earth showed that their music could go well beyond the realm of traditional bluegrass to incorporate folk, Celtic, jazz, and rock music. Todd Sheaffer, the group's main songwriter and former lead singer of From Good Homes, stood at the forefront of the group's vision, and Railroad Earth began releasing albums within six months of the band's formation.
Railroad Earth's seeds were planted as far back as 1998, when violinist Timothy Carbone (Blue Sparks from Hell, Kings in Disguise) met film music supervisor Brian Ross, a former booking agent with Family Tree Agency, at the now-defunct Wetlands club in New York City. The two started a conversation about bluegrass music during a break in the evening's lineup. After keeping in touch for several months, the two hatched an idea to gather together professional musicians in New Jersey to play bluegrass at informal jam sessions. Meanwhile, Ross hired Carbone and Andy Goessling (also in Blue Sparks from Hell, Kings in Disguise) to play music for the film Big Eden. Sheaffer arrived at the bluegrass sessions in the fall of 2000 with some new songs, which the musicians rendered as bluegrass numbers.
All the musicians started to gather at the Shindig, an open-mike event sponsored by the Pocono Bluegrass Society. Informal jam sessions continued at Goessling's house, with multi-instrumentalist John Skehan (Bobby Syvarth Band) joining the other three musicians. Eventually, Ross approached the musicians about forming a band and performing as Railroad Earth. The new group secured its core members in Sheaffer (who handled vocals and acoustic guitar), Goessling (acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, penny whistle, saxophone), Carbone (violin, acoustic guitar), and session player John Skehan (mandolin, guitar, piano). Drummer/percussionist Carey Harmon (formerly with the Hour and Bobby Syvarth Band) and upright/electric bassist Dave Von Dollen completed the lineup in January 2001.
One month after forming, the bluegrass-rock group recorded a five-song demo at Mixolydian Studios in Lafayette, NJ. Four of those songs ("Head," "Black Bear," "Stillwater Getaway," and "Cold Water") were combined with six new songs recorded in April 2001 to form the band's debut CD, The Black Bear Sessions, which was released in June by BOS Music. Railroad Earth broadened their songwriting style during the remainder of 2001, carrying on the improvisational, multiple-genre tradition started by the Grateful Dead, String Cheese Incident, Phish, and Leftover Salmon. The group skated the edge of traditional bluegrass and the jam band tradition to produce an eclectic blend of folk, Celtic, jazz, and rock filtered through a bluegrass lens. A second album (and the band's first release for Sugar Hill), Bird in a House, followed in 2002, and producer Stewart Lerman joined Railroad Earth in the studio to record 2004's The Good Life. A live album named Elko followed in early 2006.
Railroad Earth toured heavily, but the band also found time to regularly return to the studio. In 2008, the guys released their fourth studio effort, Amen Corner, which doubled as their last recording with bassist Johnny Grubb, who had replaced Dave Von Dollen five years prior. The group drafted Andrew Altman as his replacement and hit the studio once again, this time to record 2010's self-titled Railroad Earth.

BIOGRAPHY
by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
A talented and showy fiddler, Charlie Daniels and his band fuse hardcore country with a hard-edged Southern rock, boogie, and blues. The group -- which has had a rotating cast of musicians over the years -- has always been known for its instrumental dexterity, but Daniels and company were also notorious for their down-home, good-old-boy attitude; in the early '80s, they became a virtual symbol of conservative country values. Daniels and his band experienced the height of their popularity at the end of the '70s and early '80s, but they remained a popular concert attraction well into the '90s.
Daniels was born and raised in North Carolina, playing fiddle and guitar in several bands during his teenage years. At the age of 21, he decided become a professional musician, assembling an instrumental rock & roll combo called the Jaguars. The group landed a recording session for Epic Records in 1959 with Bob Johnson, who would later become Columbia Records' leading folk and country producer. The record didn't receive much attention, but the band continued to play and Daniels continued to write songs. One of his originals, "It Hurts Me," was recorded by Elvis Presley in 1963. By the late '60s, it had become clear that the Jaguars weren't going to hit the big time, so Johnson recommended to Daniels that he move to Nashville to become a session musician. Daniels followed the advice and became one of the most popular fiddlers in Nashville. He played on several Bob Dylan albums -- Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait, New Morning, and Dylan -- as well as Ringo Starr's 1970 record Beaucoups of Blues. He also became part of Leonard Cohen's touring band in the late '60s and produced the Youngbloods' Elephant Mountain album around the same time.
Daniels cut an album for Capitol Records in the early '70s that was ignored. In 1972, he formed the Charlie Daniels Band, using the Southern rock of the Allman Brothers as a blueprint. The band was comprised of Daniels (lead guitar, vocals, fiddle), lead guitarist Don Murray, bassist Charlie Hayward, drummer James W. Marshall, and keyboardist Joe DiGregorio. The formula worked, and in 1973 they had a minor hit with "Uneasy Rider," which was released on Kama Sutra Records. In 1974, they released Fire on the Mountain, which became a gold record within months of its release; the album would eventually go platinum. Its successor, 1975's Nightrider, did even better, thanks to the Top 40 country hit "Texas." Saddle Tramp, released in 1976, became his first country Top Ten album, going gold.
Throughout the mid-'70s, the Charlie Daniels Band pursued a Southern rock direction. They were moderately successful, but they never had a breakthrough hit either on the pop or country charts. By the late '70s, Daniels sensed that the audience for Southern rock was evaporating, so he refashioned the band as a more straightforward country band. The change paid off in 1979 when the single "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" became a number one hit, crossing over into the pop charts, where it hit number three. The song was named the Country Music Association's Single of the Year and helped its accompanying album, Million Mile Reflections, become a multi-platinum success.
Daniels wasn't able to follow "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" with another blockbuster single on the country charts but, ironically, he had several rock crossover successes in the years following the success of Million Mile Reflections: Full Moon (1980) went platinum and Windows (1982) went gold. Although he continued to sell respectably throughout the '80s, he didn't have a big hit until 1989's Simple Man, which went gold. In the '90s, his records failed to chart well, although he remained a popular concert draw, a trend that continued through into the 21st century.
During the first decade of the new millennium, Daniels quietly transitioned from major labels to independents, releasing records on Blue Hat and Audium, garnering some headlines in 2003 with his pro-Iraq War anthem “This Ain’t No Rag, It’s a Flag,” a song popular enough to launch a spinoff book Ain’t No Rag. Two years later, Daniels established a long-running relationship with Koch in 2005 with Songs from the Longleaf Pines. Daniels’ albums for Koch ran the gamut from bluegrass to bluesy country-rock, punctuated with holiday collections and live records, or thematic compilations like 2010’s patriotic The Land That I Love. Daniels was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2007.
