ABB fans love these intimate "An Evening with …" shows, and Kansas City got two gems at the Uptown, a great old theater that was the smallest venue the ABB played this year. Opening night kicks off with a scorching "Hot ’Lanta" and the best "Instrumental Illness" of the year. The second set has a great "Who’s Been Talking">"You Don’t Love Me" combo and a killer "Les Brers" that features the debut of Derek Trucks on bass! The "Revival" encore is over eight minutes long and bursting with joyful noise. Good stuff for sure.

This is another 2nd-year "West’s Best" choice for all kinds of good reasons. After a strong first set that ended with "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" and "Egypt," Jack Pearson joined the band for virtually the entire second set of this small venue show. Besides his usual guitar heroics, the versatile Mr. Pearson plays bass on "Statesboro Blues." The triple-guitar version of "The Same Thing" will make your hair stand on end, and "Dimples" has a mighty groove to it. "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" was always one of Jack’s showstoppers when he was a member of the band, and this rendition shows he hasn’t forgotten how to rip it up.

ABB alumnus Chuck Leavell took time out from rehearsals for the Rolling Stones tour to sit in with the band at this great show. This one also made the cut again for "West’s Best," and there is no doubt why! Chuck lends his jazzy piano stylings to the modern classic "Desdemona," and takes a rare keyboard solo on "Dreams" before finishing the show with his trademark "Jessica" and a rousing version of "Southbound." Don’t miss the extended "Revival" opener and Warren’s bluesy take on Howlin’ Wolf’s "Who’s Been Talking," plus yet another revelatory version of "Egypt."
