GOV'T MULE – Halloween Experience: Live at Riviera Theatre, Chicago - 10/31/2012

Gov’t Mule – Halloween Experience: Live at Riviera Theatre, Chicago (2012)

Gov’t Mule celebrated Halloween at Chicago, IL’s Riviera Theatre. As previously reported, the group paid tribute to Jimi Hendrix during the show, focusing on material they have never performed live. Gov’t Mule covers a particular musician or band’s catalog every Halloween but they chose Hendrix this year in order to coincide with what would have been the guitarist’s 70th birthday. The group’s past Halloween shows have paid tribute to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and The Who. After playing a set of their own material, Gov’t Mule took the stage during their second set while a vintage Hendrix interview was played for the crowd. Then, they launched into “EXP,” the opening track from Axis: Bold as Love and proceeded to offer a mix of tracks from all three of the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s studio albums, among other Hendrix classics. As promised, the group debuted a slew of material throughout the night, including “EXP,” “Freedom One Rainy Wish,” “Up From The Skies,” “Crosstown Traffic,” “Bleeding Heart (Peoples, Peoples, Peoples),” “Angel,” “…And The Gods Made Love,” “Castles Made Of Sand, Stone Free,” “Rainy Day, Dream Day/Still Raining, Still Dreaming,” “1983…(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)” and “Bold as Love.” They also offered an instrumental reading of “Machine Gun.”
Area saxophonist Chris Neal, who has performed with Umprey’s McGee also sat in on “Rainy Day, Dream Day/Still Raining, Still Dreaming.” He returned during Gov’t Mule’s encore for “Sco-Mule” and a show-closing “Little Wing” during Mule’s encore. At the start of their encore segment, Mule also riffed on “Happy Birthday” to celebrate Hendrix’s 70th birthday.

ELVIN BISHOP - Live In Concert (AUDIORIP)

Elvin Bishop's music has been making people smile for over 50 years. A founding member of the ground-breaking Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Elvin has performed and recorded with music legends such as B.B. King, John Lee Hooker and The Allman Brothers. From deep down gut-bucket blues played in smoky South Side Chicago taverns, to raucous roadhouse R&B, Bishop's instilled all of his music with passion, creativity and a healthy helping of wisdom, wit and good humor!

That's My Thing: Elvin Bishop Live In Concert DVD presents a blistering performance by Elvin Bishop and his road-tested touring band recorded live in front of a sold out crowd on December 17, 2011 at Club Fox in Redwood City, California. Bishop exuberantly struts his stuff while simultaneously coaxing his "Red Dog" to howl (aka his trusty cherry-red1959 Gibson ES-345 axe) on a selection of 18 rollicking numbers including Travelin' Shoes, Rock My Soul, Fishin', Stealin' Watermelons, Gettin' My Groove Back, Party 'Til The Cows Come Home, Little Brown Bird, Calling All Cows and 10 more !

Tonights show was a blast, Started out with cosmic charlie, though i swore it was gonna be truckin, china cat was pretty average, shakedown was ok, would have been grate, had bobby sang, but thats just my opinion. Ship of fools was a nice suprise. Hes gone a personal favorite, was pretty good as well. and Cassidy. Followed by the sets closer sugaree. It was about here where i started to get really into the show...or maybe that was the doses kickin in? hmm either way warren brought it down for the second set.

Loved hearing cryptical envelopment> The other one > Born Cross-Eyed> St Stephen The major highlight of the show to me. The Eleven and UJB also very well played, followed by a well done unbroken chain. and a smashing Gimmie Shelter. and the closer very fitting seeming how it was saturday night...one more saturday night. and a nice mellow closer brokedown palace!

THE GRATEFUL DEAD - Spring 1990: So Glad You Made It

Grateful Dead – Spring 1990: So Glad You Made It (2012)

By 1990, the Grateful Dead‘s endless touring that had been rolling on for decades was unknowingly just a few years from its conclusion with Jerry Garcia‘s death in 1995. While their ’87 studio album In the Dark had scored the band an unlikely hit with single “Touch of Grey” and its accompanying video, making albums had been a secondary concern for the Dead for years at that point, with a focus on touring eclipsing writing new material for much of the ’80s and the remainder of their existence.
Thusly, the band became a live institution, with any growth coming in the form of new jams and developments in their epic stage sets. Spring 1990: So Glad You Made It is whittled down from an 18-disc box set, paring down that tour-spanning document to just two discs of unreleased highlights. Some seasoned Deadheads consider the 1990 spring tour to be one of the best of the band’s legendary live history, citing consistently strong shows and a renewed sense of fire. Certainly by this point, their musicianship was second nature, and set lists on this tour were more inspired and fluid than on weaker tours. The song selection on So Glad You Made It emphasizes how tuned-in the sets were, with a wide cross section of crowd favorites like “Playing in the Band,” later-period compositions like “West L.A. Fadeaway,” and deep jams on songs like “Eyes of the World” and “Bird Song.” Beginning with a playful take on Sam Cooke’s “Let the Good Times Roll,” the scene is set for impassioned performances and full-hearted playing from the band. The band’s sense of dynamics is locked in tightly, with energetic numbers like “The Last Time” flowing full-force and ballads like the gorgeous and rare “Attics of My Mind” finding the bandmembers in some kind of near-telepathic state of playing together. Despite their well-honed performances, by this time in their evolution the Dead had embraced MIDI technology to expand their keyboard and guitar tones on-stage. The results on the well-recorded So Glad You Made It serve to highlight keyboardist Brent Mydland’s playing with jarringly cheesy digital piano tones as well as convert a few of Garcia’s guitar solos into cringeably computeristic flute sounds. There’s a fair amount of cornball percussion peeking through on some of the jams as well. Looking past some of the unfortunate technological choices that date the recording, the band’s force and spirit come through loud and clear. Religious Grateful Dead fans will always have their favorite shows and eras for the band, and this collection offers some strong evidence as to why the spring of 1990 is a favorite for many.

What a Great show! Show opened with Jack Straw, a personal favorite of mine...Followed by a great redition of Brown eyed Woman, Its all over now was pretty good as well. Easy wind really got me, Very well played, the high light of the set. Death Dont Have No mercy was a great one as well. followed by Dont Ease me in, another classic. then they busted out a nice lost sailor > saint of circumstance, which for me was a major highlight as well.

The Acoustic set was phenominal with Masterpiece Peggy-0 and another favorite of mine looks like rain. coming out of the acoustic set was a killer alabama getaway, and a really funked out spacey dark star. I love when they play dark star, its just a get exploratory tune. Rhythm Devils followed by space was grate. Knockin on heavens door isnt a favorite that they play, but my buddies really like it. very well played as was the whole show. Going down the road feeling bad was a great version. and the encore nicely chosen with touch of grey

I definately picked the right show to hop on the tour with. I had a Blast! The people were great ran into a bunch of people out on the west coast like myself. I cant wait for MSG...i'll post that as soon as i get home as well!

Show Rating 8.7/10 overall
