MATCHING MOLE - – Matching Mole 1972 [2CD Deluxe Edition]
Matching Mole – Matching Mole 1972 [2CD Deluxe Edition] (2012)
This was a short lived, but essential band in the annals of what’s called the Canterbury Sound, created by British progressive ensembles in the late sixties and early seventies. The band was formed when Robert Wyatt was ousted from Soft Machine, which he’d founded in the mid-sixties. Matching Mole was a wonderful debut that included tracks such as ‘O Caroline’, ‘Signed Curtain’ and ‘Part of the Dance’. This edition has been newly remastered from the original master tapes and is expanded to include five previously unreleased studio session alternate takes, the single versions of ‘O Caroline’ and ‘Signed Curtain’, along with two BBC Radio One sessions from 1972.

CARLY SIMON / ORIGINAL ALBUM SERIES
Carly Simon – Original Album Series (2011)
Carly Simon was one of the most popular of the confessional singer/songwriters who emerged in the early ’70s. The youngest child in an upper- class New York family (her father, Richard Simon, co-founded the Simon & Schuster publishing company), Simon got her start in music as part of a duo with her sister Lucy (who later wrote the music for the Broadway show The Secret Garden).
The Simon Sisters had a chart single with “Winkin’ Blinkin’ and Nod” in April 1964. But Simon’s solo debut did not come until the release of her self- titled first album in February 1971.
Original Album Series includes first 5 albums: Carly Simon (1971), Anticipation (1971), No Secrets (1972), Hotcakes (1974) and Playing Possum (1975)
Simon’s self-titled 1971 debut album placed her…
…firmly in the confessional singer-songwriter camp, addressing the same emotional concerns as her soon-to-be husband James Taylor and Carole King. There was, however, arguably an even more nakedly honest exploration of adulthood on the relationship doubts of That’s The Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be and the disillusionment of an affair in Dan, My Fling.
Anticipation, released later the same year, echoed much of its predecessor’s hybrid of vulnerability and strong-willed feminism (The Girl You Think You See, Julie Through The Glass), but the major breakthrough came with the urbane sophistication of 1972’s No Secrets, propelled by the evocative put-downs in You’re So Vain and the forthright sentiments of Waited So Long and When You Close Your Eyes.
A more blissful Simon was in evidence on 1974’s Hotcakes, its loose concept celebrating her marriage to Taylor (who guests on a duet of Mockingbird) on tracks such as Think I’m Gonna Have A Baby and Safe And Sound. The following year’s Playing Possum suffered from a dip in quality control, with only the sassy Attitude Dancing making an impression amid the sleek generic pop.

REVIEW
by Dave Thompson
Prior to the release of the (at the time, disappointing) Live album in 1974, the only officially available record of Mott the Hoople's live prowess was one track tacked onto the end of 1971's Wildlife album, a protracted take on "Keep a Knockin'" that was, apparently, the only salvageable cut from a projected full live album. The rest, producer Guy Stevens insisted, was so marred by technical problems as to be unusable. However, 36 years later listeners would discover that Stevens was a lot of things, but -- at least on this occasion -- he wasn't necessarily honest. Fairfield Halls, Live 1970 captures the full concert, from the tumultuous opening "Ohio," all ragged guitars and Verden Allen's foreboding organ, through a dynamite "Rock and Roll Queen" and three slabs from the then-forthcoming Mad Shadows, and on to the closing oldies, "Keep a Knockin'" and "You Really Got Me." And, alongside the Fillmore tapes recorded earlier in the year, at last the true magic of the original Mott the Hoople has been unleashed, a rock band that could have redefined "rock" if only more breaks had gone its way. Less exciting, but filling up the disc regardless, five tracks recorded five months later in Sweden (and previously available on the same label's All the Way from Stockholm to Philadelphia: Live 71/72 set) repeat "Thunderbuck Ram" but do add a Himalayan "Walkin' with a Mountain," "Laugh at Me," and "The Original Mixed Up Kid" to the brew, plus a volcanic cover of Mountain's "Long Red" that will leave you reeling. As if the rest of the disc hasn't already battered you hard enough.
