They used to play regularly at Pop Ivy's after the split from Ronnie Hawkins, with Jerry Penfound as the sixth member on sax and flute. Taken from a 2-track tape recording that seems to have circulated among die-hard collectors for many years. The tape is described in detail in Levon Helm's autobiography. Several of the songs on the tape are cut.

MOE. - The Electric Lemoe.nade Acid Test - 04/12/2010

MOE. - The Electric Lemoe.nade Acid Test
Troo kvlt and uncompromising, moe. is the best kept secret in rock and roll . . . and that’s just the way we like it. Those in the know make up a dedicated following that keeps coming back to enjoy experimental music in uncharted waters. This is the complete concert that was postponed from 10/30/10 to 12/4/10 and morphed from the Halloween show to the Nightmare Before Xmas. This evening with moe. highlights the psychedelic aspect of the band’s sound that fans of free range chicken will find particularly mindblowing. Five new songs were seamlessly mixed with some of moe.’s heavy hitters and melted down into an extended ambient jam. Take your time with this one. It is about the journey, not the destination.

THE WORLD OF OZ

Size: 64.8 MB
Bitrate: 256

Japan 24-Bit Remaster

With their brilliant single 'Peter's Birthday', which has been featured on various psych comps over the years, the World of Oz proved themselves to be true veterans of the pop-syke genre.

The group was signed to Deram in 1968 where they recorded three singles (including the aforementioned) and one album ('World of Oz', the one, here, in review). The band also appeared on such British TV shows as 'Beat Club' and 'Colour Me Pop'.

Overall, not much is known about the World of Oz, except that they were landmark musicians and songwriters. Each member was as crucial as the next in creating what would be their sole full-length. It is an amazing album, filled with whimsical tones and at times even haunting lyrics. It is a great departure from adulthood into childhood, and then full circle back into reality.

A must have for any psych collector or pop-syke lover!

Factoids:

1. The album was recorded in Decca studios in West Hampstead.
2. The Moody Blues recorded simultaneously in the underlying studio of the same venue.
3. A thirty-three-piece orchestra played on/for the track 'Muffin Man'.

THE ZEN TRICKSTERS - LIVE AT NELSON LEDGES QUARRY PARK, GARRETTSVILLE, OH,

ZEN TRICKSTERS
''LIVE AT NELSON LEDGES QUARRY PARK, GARRETTSVILLE, OH, ''
2007

BIOGRAPHY
by Stanton Swihart
Spiritual brothers of Phish and, like that band, heirs to the throne left vacant by the Grateful Dead, Zen Tricksters have spent the last decade traveling from venue to venue across the country adding new fans, young and old, with their brand of loose and involved improvisatory music. Based in New York, Zen Tricksters have their roots as the Volunteers, who began circa the early '80s solely as a Grateful Dead cover band. The band re-formed in 1988, continuing with Grateful Dead covers but also writing their own original like-minded tunes. With the loss of vocalist Jennifer Markard, the lineup was pared down to a four-piece made up of Jeff Mattson (vocals, guitar), Rob Barraco (vocals, keyboards), Klyph Black (vocals, bass), and Joe Chirco (drums). The band built up a large fan base the old-fashioned way: lots of intensely hard work touring across the country and a growing reputation as a superb live act, catching on not only with appreciative Deadheads and Phriendlies, but with general fans of exploratory jams and creative improvisation. By the mid-'90s, Zen Tricksters had played from Maine to Oregon and were packing ballrooms and large venues. They have opened for a diverse group of music acts, from Hot Tuna to Suzanne Vega. In addition, Zen Tricksters have acted as the backup band for numerous musicians, including Rick Danko and Bo Diddley. The band's primary influence is, of course, the Grateful Dead, and its music reflects that band's blend of rock, blues, folk, and bluegrass, but there are also prevalent classical and jazz influences. Zen Tricksters recorded Holy Fool, their first album of all-original songs, in 1996; two years later, it achieved wider release via the Zebra Tango label. The follow-up, Love Surreal, was recorded in 1999, featuring the same lineup. By the turn of the millennium, several personnel shifts had taken place: Barraco departed and was replaced by seasoned jam band vet Pete Levin, while Chirco was replaced by Alan Lerner (formerly of Joe Gallant & Illuminati and the Dimitri Gurevitch Quintette), and second guitarist/vocalist Tom Circosta (a former member of the Volunteers) joined up as well.
