BRUCE HORNSBY - Fillmore Auditorium San Francisco, CA - 04/12/1996
Bruce Hornsby - 1996-04-12 Fillmore Auditorium San Francisco, CA
With Guests Bob Weir and Phil Lesh from the Grateful Dead
Source: Soundboard
Quality: A++
My Notes: This is an excellent Bruce Hornsby show. The Quality is excellent soundboard. Bruce plays an excellent Piano and really shows his talent here, and is very reminisemt of his days with the dead. I recommend this shoe to all Bruce fans and even no fans as thsi show is also an excellent fusion of jazz and rock.
Original Notes: Here is another nice mid 90's show of Bruce, w/ Bobby & Phil making a lengthy cameo. Some nice tight playing by Bruce and band, then it loosens up a bit for the Weir/Lesh segment...imagine that! There is some SBD interference (NOT digi-noise) during D1/T3&4. I've heard 3 different copies of this recording and they all have this flaw, so I'm guessing it was inherent in the board that night. It's not all that bad, but certainly noticeable and worth noting. However, the rest of the recording is very sharp and the performance sounds like it was one hell of a left coast party!

AL GREEN - The Supreme Al Green: The Greatest Hits [1992]
Al Green - The Supreme Al Green: The Greatest Hits [1992]
Released by the British division of Hi, The Supreme Al Green: The Greatest Hits is a terrific 18-track collection that contains almost all of Green's hits, including "Tired of Being Alone," "Call Me," "I'm Still in Love With You," "Let's Stay Together," "I Can't Get Next to You," "Love and Happiness," "Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy)," "Take Me to the River," and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." Although it inexplicably overlooks "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" and contains a bit too much latter-day material for some tastes, it's still one of the best single-disc collections yet assembled on Green, rivaling the revamped Greatest Hits the Right Stuff released in the mid-'90s.

THE MASKED MARAUDERS - THE COMPLETE DEITY RECORDINGS
While the Masked Marauders were not a novelty band per se, they were indeed a fabrication of music-industry insiders who decided to see how far they could take a practical joke. The Complete Deity Recordings gathers the nine tracks from the band's self-titled debut long-player, as well as the mono versions of "Cow Pie" and "I Can't Get No Nookie" as used on the 45 rpm. The hoax commenced with a fake album review by Greil Marcus under the pseudonym of T.M. Christian. The review -- which ran in Rolling Stone magazine -- purported these Marauders were in actuality a supergroup consisting of Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, and George Harrison, and produced by Al Kooper. Taking the gag a step further was the very real Berkeley-based Cleanliness and Godliness Skiffle Band -- who were friends of Marcus -- as well as Vic Smith and Anna Rizzo. The congregation gathered in a makeshift garage studio under the auspices of recording songs to image the tracks depicted in the review. Once recorded, an album was constructed and issued on Deity Records -- a vanity label concocted as part of the prank. Quite frankly, the Masked Marauders do not have that much to offer musically. There is certainly no new ground being broken, provoking the following comment from Masked Marauder keyboardist/backing vocalist Langdon Winner: "I don't know how anybody thought that anything that incompetent could have come from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan." The doo wop cover songs "Duke of Earl," "I Am the Japanese Sandman," and "Book of Love" are reminiscent of the caliber of performances at a typical junior high school prom -- exceedingly loose and awkward while attempting the unattainable. Slightly better are original tracks which are designed to highlight various vocal and performance styles. "I Can't Get No Nookie" is a passable rendering of Mick Jagger's vocal technique coupled with the Rolling Stones' instrumental "2120 South Michigan Avenue." "Cow Pie" is likewise an attempt to create a Bob Dylan and Nashville Skyline outtake. If a silver lining exists, it is the extended "Season of the Witch," which has enough '60s garage attitude to garner repeat listens. As with all volumes in the Rhino HandMade catalogue, The Complete Deity Recordings is limited in edition and available exclusively through http: www.rhinohandmade.com. ~ Lindsay Planer
A joke review ran in Rolling Stone about an album that didn't exist by a group called the Masked Marauders, supposedly consisting of John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, & Bob Dylan, produced by Al Kooper. Some months later, an album by the Masked Marauders appeared, causing a good deal of controversy. It wasn't recorded by the above named superstars, the last song on the album being a disclaimer stating that fact. Tracks from the album have surfaced on bootlegs, disguised as Beatles, Stones, or Dylan 'outtakes'. Rhino Handmade.
Limited to 1000 numbered copies.
Includes liner notes by Greil Marcus. http://fp.io/2f3e7bcd/
VARIOUS ARTISTS - Oxford American 13th Annual Music Issue: Mississippi Music
VA – Oxford American 13th Annual Music Issue: Mississippi Music (2011)
blues, compilation, funk, rockabilly, soul
Inspired by the diversity and depth of the state’s musical heritage, the editors of The Oxford American have scoured the Magnolia State and unearthed 27 brilliant Mississippi songs to shake up the thinking (and booties) of its audience.
In fact, the new Music Issue may surprise people who believe that Mississippi boasts only blues music. Though rightly regarded for its fantastically rich blues heritage, Mississippi can also claim the birthplace of rock & roll (Tupelo, Miss., where Elvis Presley was born) and country (Meridian, Miss., where Jimmie Rodgers, “The Father of Country Music,” was born).
But, of course, even those genres don’t cover it all.
Want funky housewife disco? We’ve got it. Soul music from an underrated genius? Seventeen-piece all-babe big band? Lonesome Sun Records–approved hillbilly? This year’s OA CD includes those sounds, plus: jazz, gospel, New Wave, garage rock, 1950s pop—and much more.

ESQUIRE - ESQUIRE
Esquire - Esquire (1987)
(Review from amazon)
Esquire are a British symphonic rock group founded in 1982 by singer Nikki Squire, wife of bass player Chris Squire of Yes fame, and ex-New Cross bass player Nigel McLaren. Making up the numbers in this trio is unsung hero Charles Olins on keyboards. One would be entirely correct in assuming that Esquire play a style of music akin to Yes.
This 1987 album is a sublime work of art, that is about great songs rather than being a vehicle for displaying the artists' obvious musical craftsmanship and virtuosity. All tracks overflow with sterling melodies that ooze class and sophistication. Still this remains a hardhitting rock album. The band's unique, innovative sound is further typified by Nikki Squire's remarkable, somewhat masculine sounding vocals, which greatly resemble Jon Anderson's.
The hugely impressive highlight, "Blossomtime", which starts off with a delicate piano passage, but eventually turns into an overwhelmingly pompous affair with a chorus. The multilayered backing vox and harmonies are out of this world.
Unfortunately, the band lacked the promotional clout at Geffen records, and the following autumn Big Generator came out and stole the thunder from this album.
