VARIOUS ARTISTS - Delta Swamp Rock

The fear, confronted with a two-CD set celebrating the music of the Deep South in the early 70s, is that most of it will be taken up with guitar solos. Delta Swamp Rock duly features a couple of tracks from Lynyrd Skynyrd and three from the Allman Brothers, but soloing, choogling, boogying and other bearded self-indulgences are banished across 25 songs of soul- and country-inflected rock. Joe South's version of Hush is a dancefloor belter; Cher's foghorn of a voice is oddly suited to Dr John's I Walk on Gilded Splinters; Bobbie Gentry's contributions are a delight. The Skynyrd choices seem a bit odd at first – one is sung by their original drummer, which is a bit like picking a Pete Best number to represent the Beatles on a compilation of British 60s rock – but by being songs rather than instrumental showcases they serve the set far better than, say, Freebird would have. Delta Swamp Rock expertly merges the familiar and the forgotten to wonderful effect.

THE BEATLES - Yesterday And Today [45th Anniversary Deluxe Edition]

The Beatles – Yesterday And Today [45th Anniversary Deluxe Edition] (2011)

By the time the Capitol Records released Yesterday And Today, the Beatles were in hot water in America. The record was released just after John’s infamous interview in which he stated that the Beatles were “bigger than Jesus”, which angered Americans and provoked many bans on their music and public incinerations of memorabilia. But Yesterday And Today would take public dispproval to a whole new level, as the original cover featured the band in butcher’s smocks with baby doll parts and raw meat covering them. The record was pulled almost immediately – creating an instant collector’s item – and in the confusion that followed, several replacement covers were issued. Songs on the album were taken from the ‘leftovers’ of the British release Rubber Soul as well as the…
single/B-side “We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper”, and three songs which had not, at that point, been released in the UK: “I’m Only Sleeping”, “Doctor Robert”, and “And Your Bird Can Sing” (which all wound up on the UK version of Revolver).
