REVIEW
by Richie Unterberger
So many musicians are involved in Brothers of the Southland that it seems more like a project than a band. Going by the back cover, at any rate, there seem to be eight core members, including musicians who've done time with the Outlaws, Wet Willie, and the Black Crowes, as well as — and it's not a misprint — Bo Bice, the 2005 American Idol runner-up. Over half of the tracks were written or co-written by bandmembers and/or associates, though there's a smattering of outside contributions, as well as a nod to their influences with a cover of the Allman Brothers' "Dreams." Given their pedigrees, it's no surprise that Brothers of the Southland play classic-style Southern rock, enough so that at times they sound like a Southern rock tribute band that happens to play mostly original material. In addition to the fusion of blues-rock and hard rock so typical of the form, there are touches of soul (and occasional horns), gospel, and heavy metal braggadocio. If that brings to mind strutting boogies with overlong solos, yeah, there are a few such things here. Those are balanced out, however, by a good number of more reflective, at times sadness-tinged slower tunes; very occasionally, it even sounds a bit, though just a bit, like early-'70s Van Morrison.

ROY BUCHANAN - Live at Rockpalast

Roy Buchanan – Live at Rockpalast (2011)

Roy Buchanan has long been considered one of the finest, yet criminally overlooked guitarists of the blues rock genre whose lyrical leads and use of harmonics would later influence such guitar greats as Jeff Beck, his one-time student Robbie Robertson, and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons.
The Rolling Stones wanted him to replace Brian Jones, and Eric Clapton asked him to play the guitar for Derek & The Dominos – but he turned down both offers. He moved to Los Angeles when he was a teenager and played in the band Heartbeats with Spencer Dryden (who later became the drummer of Jefferson Airplane). After this, he went on tour with Dale Hawkins and played with Robbie Robertson (The Band) who described Buchanan as one of his main influences.
Live at Rockpalast captures a live performance recorded for the German rock series Rockpalast on February 24, 1985 in Hamburg. It is a performance that shows Buchanan’s genius on the guitar in an extremely unique way – especially with his brilliant covers by artists including Jimi Hendrix or Don Gibson. It is no secret, however, that Roy Buchanan was particularly able to present his outstanding talents during his live performances – most of which were unfortunately not recorded.

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - S.U.N.Y. at Stonybrook (Live 1971)

Allman Brothers Band - S.U.N.Y. at Stonybrook (Live 1971)
(Review from amazon)

Archival live recordings are valuable indeed, because moments of greatness are captured that can never be duplicated. Such is the case with the Allman Brothers' "S.U.N.Y. at Stonybrook 9/19/1971".

This is the second release in the Allman Brothers Archival Collection. In September of 1971, the Allmans made their fifth visit to S.U.N.Y. (State University of New York), right when all the stars were aligned for the band. "Live At Fillmore East" had been certified gold, and reviewers were unanimous that the Brothers were the best in the land.

High points are many, including a blistering "One Way Out"; at the conclusion, a proud Duane Allman boasts into the mike "That's my brother singin'!" Greg is in fine voice throughout this 107 minute double disc, but the real treat is the live version of "Blue Sky", which introduced the world to the talents of Dickie Betts. His lead vocal is strong and confident, and he and Duane's guitar leads reach heights worthy of "Fillmore East". At the end of the song, Duane again shouts praise: "Dickie Betts- WHOO!"

The second disc contains a nineteen minute version of "Dreams", showcasing Duane's powers on slide, and Betts' instrumental "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", where the entire band gets to shine.

Sadly, the following October, Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident, as was bassist Berry Oakley thirteen months later.

Line-up :
- Duane Allman / lead guitar, slide guitar
- Gregg Allman / vocals, Hammond B3 organ

The band was formed in Jacksonville, Florida on March 26, 1969, and consisted of Brothers Duane and Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts,

Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jai Johanny Johanson. This is a most excellent Soundboard recording of the band early days. I

wouldn't miss this one if you are an Allman Brothers fan. Some mind blowing guitar work here very tight band. The Band was in top form this evening.
