THE BYRDS - (Untitled) & (Unissued)

The two-CD set Untitled/Unissued contains the Byrds' 1970 Untitled album (originally a double LP) on disc one, and 14 previously unissued alternate versions, studio recordings, and live performances on disc two. This was not the Byrds' most exciting era, but a lot of extra material existed, and Untitled was going to be reissued either way. Untitled itself was one of the Byrds' better late efforts, with an album of live material (built around updates of their most famous tunes) sharing space with uneven new studio recordings in the expected country/folk-rock mode, highlighted by "Chestnut Mare" and "Just a Season." Listeners will be most interested in this expanded reissue for the disc of previously unreleased stuff, which is not remarkable, but is okay for those who enjoyed Untitled. There are alternate studio versions of two songs from Untitled's studio portion ("Yesterday's Train" and a more jangly "All the Things"); a studio alternate of "Kathleen's Song," without the orchestration that would be added when it was redone for Byrdmaniax; a studio version of "Lover of the Bayou" (done live on Untitled); the instrumental "White's Lightning, Pt. 2"; and Lowell George's "Willin'" (different from the version that appears on the Byrds' box set). Then you get eight previously unavailable 1970 live recordings, much in the style of what's heard on the live part of Untitled, and including such favorites as "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)," "Ballad of Easy Rider," "My Back Pages," and "Jesus Is Just Alright." An unindexed bonus track, an a cappella studio rendition of "Amazing Grace," ends the set. - allmusic.com

PARTICLE - Quixote's True Blue Denver, CO - 10/31/2011

Particle
2011-10-31
Quixote's True Blue
Denver, CO

SBD Matrix

Sorry couldn't find a setlist for it yet.

I listened to it at work the other day and know that the encore is AXEL F > Eye of The Storm!!
It's takes a lot of chutzpah to unveil your new guitarists in front of rolling tape and cameras, but so self-confident were Particle in their new lineup that they seem totally at ease -- so much so that one would think this quintet had been playing together for years, not mere months. And thus did the group take to the Henry Ford Theater stage in Hollywood in February 2006. Transformations Live captures the entire one-hour-and-45-minute event. Particle kick off with "Give," and they do precisely that, offering up a perfect example of '70s-styled blues-flecked prog rock, a sublime showcase for newcomers Ben Combe and Scott Metzger. "7 Minutes to Radio Darkness, Pt. 3" puts the pomp, but not the pomposity, back in pomp rock, this number an extravaganza for keyboardist Steve Molitz. The faces may have changed, but their intent -- and intensity -- remain intact, as Robbie Kreiger takes the stage to join the band on a driving cover of "L.A. Woman." That's fabulous, but "Eye of the Storm" is phenomenal, a weather system that seems to keep on expanding until it surely covers the globe. Particle now head backstage, accompanied by the cameras, eventually returning for an extensive encore that kicks off with a hip-hop-styled "Particle People," joined on-stage by rapper Blackalicious, with Joe Satriani and DJ Logic jumping aboard for a megalicious "W." "Sun Mar 11" seems to float and soar above the crowd and a psychedelic-splashed "Thanks" is short and sweet, while the acoustic "Lucky Man" spins out its beauty for an eternity. And then in fitting style, it's time for a superjam of "Superstitious," with the previous guests and the Lucent Dossier dance troupe returning to the stage for a storming take on the Stevie Wonder hit. It's one hell of a show, and all the more spectacular considering it's the first with the new lineup. Where can the group possibly go from here? Well, check out the new song "The Sweeper" in the bonus features for a clue. And catch up on all the latest with the bandmembers themselves discussing how the new lineup came about, as well as their love of collaborations. ~ Jo-Ann Greene

For the past ten years, bands like the String Cheese Incident have been compared to Phish and, of course, the the Grateful Dead. This doesn't mean that the String Cheese Incident sounds like either band, but only that they, like the other bands, love to spin out long jams. It also means that they share a real melting pot of influences, including jazz, country, bluegrass, and rock & roll. Carnival '99 finds the band at its eclectic, jamming best, with two discs of live music from the '99 tour season. Piano/organ player Kyle Hollingsworth, mandolinist Michael Kang, bassist Keith Moseley, guitarist Bill Nershi, and percussionist Michael Travis jam their way through 14 tunes with generous time allotted for noodling. The band covers bluegrass on "Shenandoah Breakdown" and "Hold Watcha Got," funk on "Hey Pocky Way," and jazz on "Take Five" and "Birdland." Nershi's acoustic guitar work on a seven-minute version of "Take Five" creates a Charlie Byrd meets Dave Brubeck sound that gives this classic a fresh makeover. The 14-minute "Jellyfish" is a somewhat bizarre song that about a guy with a bad hangover who gets abducted by two girls in a Saab. From there, the song really becomes weird. The group's jams, while often developed for ten minutes plus, never meander. Their vocals and harmony -- unlike the Grateful Dead -- remain cohesive and effective. It's fortunate that Carnival '99 is a two disc set, because this allows the listener a chance to soak up over two hours of improvisational jams, which must be the closest thing to seeing the band live. The overall impression of the String Cheese Incident on Carnival '99 is that of an eclectic group of musicians with great improvisational skills who have a lot of fun performing. One can easily imagine a time when SCI Records will issue discs of complete shows instead of selections from a tour year. For now, Carnival '99 will provide old and new fans with the next best thing to being there. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Personnel: Bill Nershi (acoustic guitar); Michael Kang (mandolin, violin); Kyle Hollingsworth (accordion, piano, organ); Keith Moseley (acoustic bass, electric bass); Michael Travis (snare drum, congas, timbales, percussion).

Dirty Linen (4-5/00, p.41) - "...Kyle Hollingworth's jazz influences come to the fore on this disc....Beautifully recorded, CARNIVAL '99 is an effective document of the magic that the String Cheese Incident can weave when they take the stage."                                                                                                                       http://www.fileserve.com/file/sNqyauV

MIKE OLDFIELD - The Complete (1985)

The Complete Mike Oldfield is a compilation album by Mike Oldfield. The double album is subdivided into four sections, with The instrumental section and The Vocal section containing shorter pieces, and The Complex section and The Live section containing excerpts from Oldfield's longer pieces.

Appearing in '85, this compilation remains one of the best available to those of who believe in the strength of his earlier work, when compared to the weak 'Earth Moving', for example. Spread over two CD's as opposed to the flabby 'Elements' package, you get the classic short instrumentals ('Blue Peter', 'Guilty' etc), the best songs ('Moonlight Shadow', 'Crime of Passion' etc) on CD 1. CD2 brings generous snippets of the early full-length works - 'Tubular Bells' & the seminal 'Ommadawn', but these are supplemented by four live tracks, from a 4-year period ending in '84. Listen to 'Mount Teide' - LOUD - and tell me straight you don't believe in the power of live music - even in a recording - to move the soul and send shivers down the spine. Awesome. A genuine Five-Stars. - amazon.com

BOB SEGER - ULTIMATE HITS

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band – Ultimate Hits: Rock and Roll Never Forgets [2CD] (2011)

For casual fans who don’t already own both volumes of Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band’s Greatest Hits, this week sees the release of a worthwhile alternative in the two-disc retrospective, Ultimate Hits: Rock and Roll Never Forgets (Capitol Records).
All the mainstays are present — “Night Moves,” “Still the Same,” “Against The Wind,” “Old Time Rock and Roll,” etc. — as well as two previously unreleased covers: a middle-of-the-road ride on Tom Waits’ “Downtown Train” and a far more fun romp through the Little Richard classic “Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey (Going Back to Birmingham).”
Unlike the Greatest Hits sets, this one includes classics like the original mono version of “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” by the Bob Seger System…
…and the Live Bullet double shot of “Traveling Man” and “Beautiful Loser,” which once and for all should’ve been mixed into one track as God and rock radio always intended.
What is perhaps most striking about this set, though — and this speaks more to Seger’s indelible impact on American music than it does anything else — is that at 26 tracks it still doesn’t cover all the hits. Though while a case could be made against one or two dubious inclusions — How did his rendition of “Little Drummer Boy” make the cut here, for instance, but not “Sunspot Baby?” — overall this retrospective is solid, like a rock.

SAM BUSH - Howlin at the Moon'

Sam Bush - Howlin at the Moon'
A whirling dervish onstage, [Sam Bush] flails like Jimmy Page, conjuring up mesmerizing polyrhythmic chops and trailblazing solos.... Howlin' showcases Bush's facility as a player and composer, as well as his stylistic sense of adventure. As usual, Bush meshes bluegrass, funk, jazz, reggae, and blues into a set more diverse than most people's record collections.

In the church of bluegrass, mandolinist and fiddler Sam Bush has long been a nonconformist--or at least the musical equivalent of a Cafeteria Catholic. In 1971, at 19, the rhythmic demon founded New Grass Revival, and for the next 18 years alternately amazed and enraged traditionalists, extending the band's purview to reggae, jazz, and rock. Bush's third solo album finds him in top, blindingly fast form: note the high-level cheer of "Hold On" or "Face Tomorrow." On the instrumental collaborations with long-time pals such as Bela Fleck and Jerry Douglas, the mandolin-meister shines, as ever. But why is it that he never gets enough credit as a violinist? The wailing intro to "Crossing the Transippi" demonstrates that Bush plays second fiddle to no one. --Kerry Fried
