CREAM - The Greatest Rock Sensation

Cream were a 1960s British rock supergroup power trio consisting of bassist/singer Jack Bruce, drummer Ginger Baker, and guitarist/singer Eric Clapton.
Their unique sound was characterised by a hybrid of blues rock, hard rock and psychedelic rock, combining psychedelia themes, Clapton's blues guitar playing, Bruce's powerful, versatile vocals and prominent bass playing, Baker's pulsating, jazz-influenced drumming and Pete Brown's poetry-inspired lyrics.
The group's third album, Wheels of Fire, was the world's first platinum-selling double album.

The band is widely regarded as being the world's first successful supergroup. In their career, they sold over 15 million albums worldwide. Their music included songs based on traditional blues such as "Crossroads" and "Spoonful", and modern blues such as "Born Under a Bad Sign", as well as more eccentric songs such as "Strange Brew", "Tales of Brave Ulysses" and "Toad".

Although Cream were only together for a little more than two years, their influence was immense, both during their late-'60s peak and in the years following their breakup. Cream were the first top group to truly exploit the power trio format, in the process laying the foundation for much blues-rock and hard rock of the 1960s and 1970s.

It was with Cream, too, that guitarist Eric Clapton truly became an international superstar. Critical revisionists have tagged the band as overrated, citing the musicians' emphasis upon flash, virtuosity, and showmanship at the expense of taste and focus.

This was sometimes true of their live shows in particular, but in reality the best of their studio recordings were excellent fusions of blues, pop, and psychedelia, with concise original material outnumbering the bloated blues jams and overlong solos.

All three of the musicians yearned to break free of the confines of the standard rock/R&B/blues group, in a unit that would allow them greater instrumental and improvisational freedom, somewhat in the mold of a jazz outfit.

Eric Clapton's stunning guitar solos would get much of the adulation, yet Bruce was at least as responsible for shaping the group's sound, singing most of the material in his rich voice. He also wrote their best original compositions, sometimes in collaboration with outside lyricist Pete Brown.

Clapton and Baker would quickly resurface in 1969 as half of another short-lived supergroup, Blind Faith, and Clapton of course went on to one of the longest and most successful careers of anyone in the rock business.

Bruce and Baker never attained profiles nearly as high after leaving Cream, but both kept busy in the ensuing decades with various interesting projects in the fields of rock, jazz, and experimental music.

Cream reunited for a handful of live shows in 2005 at London's Royal Albert Hall and New York City's Madison Square Gardens, but no further reunions were forthcoming, and Bruce died of liver disease in Suffolk, England in October 2014.

THE NIGHTHAWKS - JACKS & KINGS VOL. 1&2 1977

The Nighthawks were playing with Muddy Waters at the Cellar Door at the time, so they invited his band to come into the studio after hours to record some classic Chicago blues tunes, including Jimmy Rogers “Walking By Myself,” John Lee Hooker’s “Sugar Mama,” and Elmore James “Dust My Broom” and “The Sky is Crying.” The result was a classic—a showcase of inspired playing of outstanding blues, titled “Jacks & Kings.” The band to this day regards this as one of their finest moments, and it became probably their best selling album.

In 1979, Adelphi created “Jacks & Kings, Volume 2: Full House.” This featured some quality, previously unreleased material from Side Pocket Shot and the Jacks & Kings sessions. The musical highlights included Paul Butterfield’s “Born in Chicago,” Robert Nighthawk’s “Anna Lee,” and Earl Hooker’s “Two Bugs and a Roach.” It was another solid showcase of classic blues mixed with rock and roll, and has been re-released as the combined CD “Jacks & Kings Volume I & II.”

Lineage note:Yes, I used EAC, even though there was an original DAT available.  Dave did the mastering with his high-quality home studio, then burned audio discs for me as that is the most practical for him.  I then ripped the discs using EAC, did more editing, and converted the show to FLAC.  This seemed to make more sense than taking the DATs and converting them myself.  If that bothers you, don't download the show.  I think the extra quality of his mastering is worth it, and this is the only known SBD source of this show.

Review:

One of the best shows from the 1980 tour, this show has a great version of Heartbreaker
and The Train Kept a Rollin'. Jimmy flashes between inspired playing and getting his
fingers caught in the strings. The rest of the group play well and seem to be having fun,
although they totally botch Kashmir. That caused Plant to commented it: "If anybody's
bootlegging that, you'll have to scratch that number cause wasn't completely correct - somehow
we got through it." Robert's voice is in great shape. (Argenteum Astrum)

THE WHO – Live at Shea Stadium 1982

The Who – Live at Shea Stadium 1982 (2015)

Shea StadiumOn Oct. 12 and 13, 1982, the Who performed a pair of shows at New York’s Shea Stadium. The second night was filmed and now, 33 years later, it’s making its debut in full on DVD.
Nineteen-eighty-two was a rough year for the Who. Though the band released the It’s Hard album, which sailed into the U.S. Top 10 urged by the hits “Eminence Front” and “Athena,” it was also the end of the road for the much-loved band. The tour was originally put in place to promote the new album, but it was announced that it would serve as their farewell. That, of course, would ultimately prove not to be the case, but it would be the last with drummer Kenney Jones and their last outing until a reunion in 1989.
Live at Shea Stadium 1982 captures the entire second night at Shea, and, truth be told, the years have been kind to the performance here.
The whole Jones era has gotten a lot of slack, some deserved, over the decades, mostly due to the unanswered question of how could such a vibrant and exciting drummer in his days with the Small Faces and Faces become so stiff when behind the kit for the Who?
In viewing this new DVD — even though Jones is, at times, frustrating — the Who are still in fine form throughout. It should be noted that Jones had some mighty big shoes to fill, so any criticism on his playing needs that side note.
They deliver a long and varied set list, touching on various corners of their incredible catalog, including a healthy nod to both Tommy and Quadrophenia as well as all the hits. One interesting note is that you get to see and hear the band dish out rarely heard songs such as “Sister Disco” and John Enwistle‘s “The Quiet One.” And even though he’s not the powerhouse drummer the late Keith Moon was, Jones holds his own.
