RAINBOW - A LIGHT IN THE BLACK - 1975-1984

According to Darker Than Blue: "The first ever history of Rainbow according to the label, and a set which can’t really make it’s mind up what it wants to be. It’s got far too many alternate tracks and rough mixes to be of much interest to casual fans, so seems to be aimed at the more committed Rainbow enthusiast. It’s a difficult balance to strike, as I found out when I put that Listen Learn Read On package together for EMI some years ago and got roundly dissed in some quarters for mixing so many rarities amongst a more off the wall album track choice!

As well as regular album tracks, we have a number of ‘rarities’, and on the first few discs these comprise rough mixes of a trio of Rising tracks, live recordings from Japan (which may be from the On Stage reissue), and rehearsal versions from 1977 of Long Live Rock and Roll tracks. Early lists suggested tracks from the Don Kirshner’s show and Osaka but these have been changed for more of the Munich 77 show since then. From the Down To Earth era there is an instrumental take of one track, some live numbers from November 1979 off the King Biscuit show and Stargazer audio from Castle Donington.

The Turner period is  boosted by audio of the San Antonio set from 1982 and a couple of tracks from Hammersmith in 1981. The set finishes with latter day bits and bobs including a couple of out-takes from the last album, three live cuts from Cardiff in 1983 (great to have the applause back on Stranded!) and another three from the Tokyo show in 1984 on the band’s last tour.

It’s a little difficult to be exact about which of these are new to official CD (collectors will probably have sourced many on bootleg in the past), and which are recycled from the last set of Rainbow album double remasters, and the advance information doesn’t tell us.

The set is rounded off with a DVD from the Donington Monsters of Rock event, but it is just the BBCTV edit, with all the attendant issues (starting the show with the encore, etc.).  As the gig was filmed by manager Bruce Payne’s own company, you might have thought the full show could be sourced.  Apparently white label double vinyl test pressings of the set were sent out, and Graham Bonnet recalls them all being invited to a screening of the film."

YES - Newcastle, UK - October 16, 1971

Yes
Newcastle, UK
October 16, 1971
Remastered by Shaun Toole December 2002

Remastering notes:
The recording had numerous loud passages where the taper had not adjusted for changes in the music volume. This caused distortion on the master tape which still exists in the remaster. The taper tended to overcompensate for the high levels by turning the record level down too far, then back up to a reasonable level. These abrupt changes have been smoothed out in this remaster. Additionally, the tape ran fast and the pitch was therefore too high. This has been corrected, too, along with hiss and click reduction. Equalization was applied to remove hum and some annoying frequencies which resonated in the concert hall, and to give a more natural overall sound.

1.01 Roundabout (8.20)
1.02 I've Seen All Good People (8.04)
1.03 Mood For A Day (2.49)

1.08 Heart Of The Sunrise (11.08)
1.09 Wakeman Solo (7.21)
1.10 Perpetual Change (8.18) Drum solo missing by tape flip

* Apparently the band's organ either broke down or did not arrived at the concert hall. Rather than stop the show for twenty minutes and wait for the instrument to arrive, Jon called for Long Distance Runaround and The Fish instead of Heart of the Sunrise - but not before he had already given his lengthy introduction to the latter.

** Jon again introduces Heart of the Sunrise, determined to play this important song from the "new album" (Fragile) in spite of the still-missing organ. Who are those additional voices? And is that a dog barking while the band tunes up? Wakeman fills with piano where we usually hear the organ in the introduction to Heart of the Sunrise.

*** The tape runs out during the middle section of Perpetual Change. The recording picks up again during the wrap-up of the song. Apparently the entire drum solo was missed by the taper. Since some type of edit would be required to put the two pieces of the song together without the middle section, I cross-faded the two fragments in a style similar to the studio version of the song, in which the two Yes bands play against each other on opposite stereo channels.                                             http://www.filefactory.com/file/5gzwg1kldvw9/yes%20%201971-10-16%20-%20Twenty-minute%20Tap%20Dance%20-%20Newcastle.rar

This recording also circulates as Fresno, CA., 1974-03-20. I believe the correct date and location are the Detroit ones. Checking Forgotten-Yesterdays.com, there are comments from attendees about the short set and the next night's show which jive with this recording.

This is a very good tape. Its only shortcoming is that it is so short!

YES - Boston Garden Boston, MA - 02/26/1974

Yes
Boston Garden
Boston, MA
1974-02-26

"The Boston Tea-FTO Party" (get it? TFTO? clever, aren't I!)

Source: much-better alternate audience recording which surfaced in late 2003 -> Matt Putzel -> G. Pisano -> TheTooleMan -> Sound Forge and other of TheTooleMan's Toys -> Audio CD -> EAC -> FLAC

If you have JUST ONE recording of Yes in Boston on 1974-02-26, THIS AIN'T IT. You know the lyrics in "The Remembering" which say, "Alternate hue, alternate hue..." Well, this is ALTERNATE TAPE!!!

Matt Putzel unearthed this one from whomever had it buried in their treasure chest over the years. This recording has more substance than the more widely-circulated but thin-sounding version you already have.

The concert is one of the best performances of the Tales shows, and this is one of the best-sounding of all the live Tales tapes. Yes was in full swing with the Tales tracks, the concerts were going sort of like clockwork, Wakeman was drinking himself blind, the audience was yelling for Roundabout after the first song... what more can you ask for?

The band stopped playing "The Remembering" at the end of February, caving in to demands for more familiar material, so this is one of the last live performances of that track. It's also one of the best, with fewer Wakeman fuck-ups. Too bad they dropped it, since it's my favorite of the "Tales."

Mr. Putzel had patched the gaps in this recording using the more widely-circulated version. I asked for a copy of the unpatched master, but he could not provide one. (I would still like a copy of the unaltered master. I think George P. ultimately sent me a copy of Matt's remaster.) I decided I could improve the way the gaps were patched, at least to my taste, by matching the pitch and EQ of the two sources more closely. So what you have here is my remaster built upon Matt's.

This is my Thanksgiving present to all of you. It's been a shitty year for me in a lot of ways, but I am still thankful for a number of things, including the friends I have made at Dimeadozen.

Art is provided, including some big-assed TIFF files for you hi-def freaks.

"And I do think very well."

Jon Camp - bass, vocals
Terrence Sullivan - drums, percussion, backing vocals
John Tout - keyboards, backing vocals
Michael Dunford - acoustic guitars

Andy Powell - guitar on "Ashes Are Burning"
Al Stewart - vocals on "Ashes Are Burning"

1973 was a special year for RENAISSANCE for it was then that the band’s classic line-up solidified, yet it also marked the first time when the group didn’t follow their latest album with a tour – for economic reasons. Instead, they opted for a one-off performance in a recording studio at Wembley for a small audience, which resulted in this unique document taped from soundboard and having been on a bootleg circuit for years in inferior quality. More so, it resulted in much tighter, than on-stage, performance, with the accent on the instrumental interplay rather then Annie Haslam‘s soaring voice.
Fantastic as ever, the singer sends a crystal note to the sky in “Ashes Are Burning” – the symphonic-to-jazz title epic from the then-recently released LP, embellished here with Al Stewart’s backing and Andy Powell‘s highly charged bluesy solo – but it’s Terry Sullivan‘s drums and Jon Camp’s bass that build a solid foundation at the bottom end of the ensemble work. The stunning dynamics are at play from the opening salvo of “Can You Understand” to the last effusive chords of “Prologue” whose heart marries samba to baroque dance, and relent only on a new song “At The Harbour,” where ethereal organ and Michael Dunford’s gentle acoustic picking provide a safety net for an otherwise a cappella delivery. This piece, together with “Sounds Of The Sea” from the previous album, which saw the second advent of RENAISSANCE, would soon be dropped from the group’s set yet swells delicately for a while, floating on John Tout’s piano.
Just as innocent, the largely acoustic “Let It Grow” demonstrates the band’s handling of intricate vocal polyphony, while “Carpet Of The Sun” is, for all its romanticism, dappled with experience, one to carry the quintet through their orchestra-shrouded ’70s. No such strings attached yet, it’s the beginning of the band’s song for all seasons.

The big mystery:

This version is digitized from Westwood One Superstars In Concert CO-89-26 for broadcast the weekend of September 22, 1989.  The concert is identified as from the Concord Pavilion by the announcer on tracks 1 and 26.

There is another Westwood One Superstars In Concert show from 1990 with an identical track listing, 90-16 for broadcast the weekend of July 14-15, 1990.  The number 90-16 is printed on the LP discs and that number is in sequence with the broadcast window date (90-15 is Henley for July 8-9 and show 90-17 is Bruce Hornsby for broadcast July 21-22).

However, the cue sheet for the 1990 Allman Brothers show has the number of 90-28 on it.

There was an ongoing mix-up that summer at Westwood One, because the Henley show for July 7-8 has discs 90-15 and cue 90-27, the Petty show for Aug. 26-28 has discs 90-22 and cues 90-34, the Elton John show for Sept. 22-23 has discs 90-26 and cues 90-38.  And there may be more....

The 1990 show - whether it's 90-16 or 90-28...has been identified several times on Ebay as Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View.  Presumably that comes from the announcer, too, but I can't verify that as I don't have a copy.

The Allman Brothers played both venues in 1989, a day apart:

Concord Pavilion Aug. 10, 1989
Shoreline Amphitheatre Aug. 11, 1989

Westwood One may have recorded both shows, but it's not likely they would have edited two identical track listings out of the raw recordings and broadcast both of them.  The most likely guess is that one of the shows was incorrectly identified.  It's also possible that the show is a composite of recordings from both venues, leading to the difference in attribution.

I'm listing this as Concord, but if anyone can confirm or deny the actual venue by comparing with an audience tape, that would solve this mystery.
