RENAISSANCE - DeLane Lea Studio 1973

                                        Renaissance - DeLane Lea Studio 1973  (C)2015

Tracklist:

01. Can You Understand 10:09
02. Let It Grow 05:40
03. Sounds Of The Sea 06:11
04. Carpet Of The Sun 03:38
05. At The Harbour 06:57
06. Ashes Are Burning (with Andy Powell and Al Stewart) 11:51
07. Prologue 06:46

00:51:16

Annie Haslam - lead vocals
Jon Camp - bass, vocals
Terrence Sullivan - drums, percussion, backing vocals
John Tout - keyboards, backing vocals
Michael Dunford - acoustic guitars

Andy Powell - guitar on "Ashes Are Burning"
Al Stewart - vocals on "Ashes Are Burning"

1973 was a special year for RENAISSANCE for it was then that the band’s classic line-up solidified, yet it also marked the first time when the group didn’t follow their latest album with a tour – for economic reasons. Instead, they opted for a one-off performance in a recording studio at Wembley for a small audience, which resulted in this unique document taped from soundboard and having been on a bootleg circuit for years in inferior quality. More so, it resulted in much tighter, than on-stage, performance, with the accent on the instrumental interplay rather then Annie Haslam‘s soaring voice.
Fantastic as ever, the singer sends a crystal note to the sky in “Ashes Are Burning” – the symphonic-to-jazz title epic from the then-recently released LP, embellished here with Al Stewart’s backing and Andy Powell‘s highly charged bluesy solo – but it’s Terry Sullivan‘s drums and Jon Camp’s bass that build a solid foundation at the bottom end of the ensemble work. The stunning dynamics are at play from the opening salvo of “Can You Understand” to the last effusive chords of “Prologue” whose heart marries samba to baroque dance, and relent only on a new song “At The Harbour,” where ethereal organ and Michael Dunford’s gentle acoustic picking provide a safety net for an otherwise a cappella delivery. This piece, together with “Sounds Of The Sea” from the previous album, which saw the second advent of RENAISSANCE, would soon be dropped from the group’s set yet swells delicately for a while, floating on John Tout’s piano.
Just as innocent, the largely acoustic “Let It Grow” demonstrates the band’s handling of intricate vocal polyphony, while “Carpet Of The Sun” is, for all its romanticism, dappled with experience, one to carry the quintet through their orchestra-shrouded ’70s. No such strings attached yet, it’s the beginning of the band’s song for all seasons.

The big mystery:

This version is digitized from Westwood One Superstars In Concert CO-89-26 for broadcast the weekend of September 22, 1989.  The concert is identified as from the Concord Pavilion by the announcer on tracks 1 and 26.

There is another Westwood One Superstars In Concert show from 1990 with an identical track listing, 90-16 for broadcast the weekend of July 14-15, 1990.  The number 90-16 is printed on the LP discs and that number is in sequence with the broadcast window date (90-15 is Henley for July 8-9 and show 90-17 is Bruce Hornsby for broadcast July 21-22).

However, the cue sheet for the 1990 Allman Brothers show has the number of 90-28 on it.

There was an ongoing mix-up that summer at Westwood One, because the Henley show for July 7-8 has discs 90-15 and cue 90-27, the Petty show for Aug. 26-28 has discs 90-22 and cues 90-34, the Elton John show for Sept. 22-23 has discs 90-26 and cues 90-38.  And there may be more....

The 1990 show - whether it's 90-16 or 90-28...has been identified several times on Ebay as Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View.  Presumably that comes from the announcer, too, but I can't verify that as I don't have a copy.

The Allman Brothers played both venues in 1989, a day apart:

Concord Pavilion Aug. 10, 1989
Shoreline Amphitheatre Aug. 11, 1989

Westwood One may have recorded both shows, but it's not likely they would have edited two identical track listings out of the raw recordings and broadcast both of them.  The most likely guess is that one of the shows was incorrectly identified.  It's also possible that the show is a composite of recordings from both venues, leading to the difference in attribution.

I'm listing this as Concord, but if anyone can confirm or deny the actual venue by comparing with an audience tape, that would solve this mystery.

Jimmy Page guitar
John Paul Jones bass, keyboards
Robert Plant vocals
John Bonham drums

Notes: Rocky Mountain Hop contains the soundboard recording of Led Zeppelin’s March 19th, 1975 Vancouver show. It’s an extremely enjoyable and dynamic sounding recording; one of the best to surface from the 1975 tour. It has wide separation with a great balance between instruments and ambient audience noise. John Paul Jones’ bass is higher in the mix compared to the other 75 boards, but not overwhelming nor distorted but provides great counterpoint to Page and Bonham making this a fascinating listen. One of the functions of the bass is to elicit a visceral reaction to the music and this soundboard is an excellent example of that effect. This release has caused many to pay more attention to this show and give a re-evaluation as one of the best nights on the tour with particular attention upon the developing epics. 303. Whole Lotta Love

Modestly billed as "An event... The Supershow of the year!"
Led Zeppelin attract 56,800 persons to today's show and break the
single concert attendance record set by The Beatles in 1965. The
show grosses an estimate 309,000 pounds.
"Hello, It seems between us we've done something nobody's ever
done before... and that's fantastic!" is Plant's triumphant opening
comment. Robert's voice is a bit hoarse at first but overall it's a fine
performance for so early in the tour. The set list has had some major
changes for the American shows. "Celebration Day" has been recalled
and now follows directly after "Rock And Roll". "Over The Hills And
Far Away" has now been moved back in the running order to fourth
place. "Black Dog" is now performed with a few bars of "Bring It On
Home" as an introduction. "Dancing Days" and "Bron Yr Aur Stomp"
are both dropped from the standard set. John Bonham's solo "Moby
Dick" is reintroduced, although in a much truncated form. "Whole
Lotta Love" is also now much shorter, losing most of the medley
section, only "Boogie Chillum" is regularly retained.
The sheer size of the crowd tonight causes problems at the front of
the stage. After "Since I've Been Loving You", Robert appeals to the
crowd: "Listen, as we've achieved something between us that's never
been done before, will you just cool it on the barriers here. Because
otherwise a lot of people might get poorly, right? So if you have
a little respect for the person who's standing next to you, then possible
we can have no problems, do we? It's bad enough with the balance
of payments!" The situation doesn't improve however, so after
"The Rain Song" Plant addresses the crowd once more: "We want
this to be a really joyous occasion, I gotta tell you three people
going. We are animals, but we can move back a little bit because
it's the only way."
Robert comments that "Dazed And Confused" takes him back to when
he was 19... "before I got the clap or anything!" A power packed 11
minutes version of "Moby Dick" flows straight into "Heartbreaker"
which is in turn non-stop into "Whole Lotta Love". This is the
only occasion where these pieces are linked in such a manner.
Plant makes references to beating The Beatles' record during the
"Boogie Chillum" section.
The first encore of "The Ocean" is complete with Bonham's spoken
introduction and "Communication Breakdown" closes the stage.

Recording sessions involving musicians who do not regularly work together can be notoriously unproductive, the shelves of second hand record shops are littered with dusty remnants of what might have been a great session. Happily 'Tramp' is a very fine exception to this rule, perhaps because although there is plenty of creative and spontaneous playing on these tracks, the songs themselves, written by Bob Hall and Dennis Cotton, are economical, witty and tightly constructed; there are no twelve minute guitar solos on this record. Every musician contributed hugely to the overall strength of performance that is obvious throughout the set. Dave and Jo-Anne Kelly are renowned for their ability as blues singers, and they tackled each song whole-heartedly, often adding new ideas whilst actually recording. Bob Hall is surely the finest boogie pianist in Britain, and has never played better than on these sessions. Bob Brunning is also a highly experienced bass player who has worked and recorded with many blues giants, forming a unit with Bob Hall which has become much in demand by impressed visiting American performers, many of whom have invited them back to the States to form a permanent band! Mick Fleetwood has been the mainstay of Fleetwood Mac for a long time, and when one listens to this exciting playing on this album, one can see why - listen to his inspired and absolutely spontaneous drum lead in during the entirely unrehearsed piano break in 'Too Late For That Now' which leads incidentally to one of the most exciting solos heard in a long while. Danny Kirwan plays crisply and economically, showing his ability, unusual among rock guitarists - to know when not to play, nevertheless turning in some pleasing solos. Dave Brooks proves just how easily he recently stole the show on some of the '73 American Blues Legends performances, and last but not least, percussionist Ian Morton adds a lot of excitement to the proceedings. Here then is a fresh and exciting album representing of more than worthwhile gathering together of some well known musical 'Tramps'.      http://www.filefactory.com/file/37jk28gh51i5/Tramp%20-%20Put%20A%20Record%20On%20%28UK%20Blues%2C%201974%29%20%5B320%5D.rar
