JOHN MAYALL & The Bluesbreakers – Live In 1967

John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers – Live In 1967 (2015)

mp3 320 kbps | 171 MB

This special live recording is available courtesy of a hardcore Mayall fan from Holland by the name of Tom Huissen, who concealed a one-channel reel-to-reel tape recorder on his person as he attended shows at a handful of London clubs (including the legendary Marquee) in early 1967, recording the band’s performance each night. The tapes Huissen made of these shows remained unheard and unreleased until they were recently acquired by Mayall who, working with Forty Below’s Eric Corne, restored them to releasable condition. “While the source recording was very rough and the final result is certainly not hi-fidelity, it does succeed in allowing us to hear how spectacular these performances are,” says Corne in a press release for the new album.

Superpickers, Nashville Tennessee, 12-06-1990 (SBD)

Here is another great bluegrass recording billed as the "superpickers".  It has a different lineup than the March of 1990 show, but it still is "super" as far as talent level.  Four of the five musicians are on both recordings.  They dropped the banjo for this one and replaced Vassar Clements with
Stuart Duncan on fiddle.

YES - Sheffield City Hall Sheffield, UK Nov. 27, 1973

I can't believe this one's fallen off the tracker. This audience capture from the UK TFTO tour at Sheffield on 11/27/73 is a highly listenable, yet unfortunately, incomplete show. Notable for the inclusion of Heart of the Sunrise replacing And You and I, this is an exceptional early Tales show. Highly recommended. Thanks to Relayerman for the original upload!

The UK Tales tour was performed on the eve of the release of the Tales From Topographic Oceans album in the UK. There were a few differences in the UK tour and the subsequent US tour in that several dates only featured 2 songs from the Close To The Edge album and Heart of the Sunrise was played. Midway through the UK tour Heart was dropped and the entire Close To The Edge album was played. The US tour, for the most part, stuck to that setlist with a few minor variations such as Rick Wakeman doing a solo segment here and there and The Remembering being dropped midway through the tour. This show from Sheffield is, so far, the best sounding show from the UK tour, but sadly the complete show doesn't seem to exist. Also, this show was held in a 2100 seat hall so it was an intimate setting as can be heard from some of the back and forth banter between the band and the audience.

SPOCK'S BEARD - THE LIGHT

Neil Morse composed most of “The Light”, with the exception of the more traditional closing track “On the Edge”, within a week or so. He asked his brother to play on the demos and at first he didn’t seem very into it. Then he called a few weeks later and said, ‘Oh yeah, this stuff is killer…Let’s put a band together!’ — and Spock’s Beard was born. Enter drummer Nick D’Virgilio and bassist Dave Meros. The Morse brothers handle hammond organ, mellotron and other keyboard duties and out comes their debut album “The Light”.
The album introduces listeners to many of the musical elements that would become Spock’s Beard trademarks. Consisting of just four songs (only one shorter than seven minutes), The Light demonstrates the Beard’s desire to bridge its tight grasp of 70s progressive with contemporary charm, chops and wit – all characteristics in short supply from American bands at the time.
The title track is a 15+ minute suite with varied sections and themes that are in turn sensitive and pretty, powerful, and humourous. A tasty, generous and satisfying helping of pure progressive!
“Go the Way You Go” is while somewhat more pop/accessible than the other material here, it is still heavyweight progressive rock. The speaker-shaking ending has a majestic feel that would be especially effective live.
At over 23 minutes, “The Water” is the longest piece on the album. This suite contains some of the album’s heaviest moments, and the crunchy hammond riffs at the beginning are particularly welcome to old rockers’ ears. A very varied piece, it holds interest despite its length.
The final number, “On the Edge,” at only six minutes, is, perforce, not as “epic” as the tracks that precede it, but is still a terrific, hard-rocking song that brings this excellent album to a strong finish.
As debut albums go this one’s a blue-ribbon winner and an exemplary place to start for the Spock’s Beard neophyte.
Line-up:
- Neal Morse / lead vocals, mellotron, hammond organ, keyboards, acoustic and electric guitar
- Alan Morse / lead electric guitar, cello, mellotron & vocals
- Dave Meros / bass, French horn
- Nick D’Virgilio / drums, percussions, vocals
Track List:
01. The Light – 15:33
02. Go the Way You Go – 12:07
03. The Water – 23:10
04. On the Edge – 6:14

YES - Hippodrome Theatre Bristol, UK - November 18, 1973

Here is another Relayerman offering that's fallen off the tracker. This  audience capture from the UK TFTO tour at Bristol on 11/18/73 is the earliest known recording of a Tales show and, again, notable for the inclusion of Heart of the Sunrise. Thanks to Relayerman for the original upload!

Notes on Sound Quality: Audience Recording, the SQ is good.

Here is the earliest known recording of a Yes Tales show. I got the tapes in a trade about 10 years ago. Don't know the lineage, but probably a generation or two at least. The tapes needed work and so I applied a ton of stuff to get this one right. First pitch correction, then some EQ for highs and lows, remove a nasty 100mhz hum, remove some hollowness, add audio compression for bass, add audio compression for voice, clean up some clapping and clicks, remove some low frequency on the acoustic guitar, and finally some noise reduction in the real quiet spots to remove some hiss. This is a real listenable show. Too bad its not complete; and the taper turned off the recorder between songs (sigh). The performance by the band is good, but you can hear some problems with timing in a few spots (see sample) and Rick is feeling his way around different keyboards on some things which were later refined for the US tour.
